with a smaller front sprocket will a gs500f pop up in 2nd ?
Don't go smaller than a 15t front sprocket; anything less will ruin your chain. If you can't get it to "pop up" with the stock gearing, then you need to develop your skills more, instead of screwing with the gearing. Be prepared to spend money to repair your motorcycle every time you drop it; even if you DON'T drop it, you'll probably bend or crimp your fork tubes pretty quickly, and then you'll wonder why the front suspension isn't working properly. Stoppies are just as destructive; when you lever the bike up onto the front wheel, you put an enormous strain on fork tubes and sliders that are not designed for it.
Do yourself a favor; buy an old dirtbike, something small and light, and learn how to wheelie on that first. You'll learn more about balance and control with that than you will by ruining a perfectly good GS. Any good dirt bike will be built stronger than an entry-level streetbike (like the GS), because they have to be able to withstand frequent crashes and get-offs. They're MUCH easier to get up on one wheel, front OR back, and they're not covered with parts that shatter on impact. Learning on a small dirtbike will build your skills MUCH faster than beating the hell out of a GS will, and you'll save a lot of money in the process.
I've got a 14T on mine, and it's been known to bring the front up on several occasions when shifting to 2nd.
I can ride pop wheelies In 1st all day long but not in 2nd
If somebody wants to buy me a new 520 xring chain, I'll install my 14t and let you know how it is :)
I have a 14t and a new chain just waiting for me to get off my butt and install 'em.
I'll post my observations when I finally get the job done.
Im trying to decide between 14 tooth sprocket or 15 tooth, since it seem like alot of people here have the 14 tooth sprocket I thought I ask you guys. Dose the 14 tooth sprocket give you more torque on the bottom end the 1st and 2st and how much of the top end will you lose with the 14 tooth sprocket?
I went from 16t to 15t a couple-three weeks ago, and I wouldn't want to go down to the 14t. I'm already shifting more (enough that I've noticed it), and 1st gear is pretty short now, especially when riding in 'normal' mode. In 'sport' mode the 15t seems to have made a noticeable difference in 0-60 times, and in 'normal' mode I've got more oomph. What I"m trying to say is that I really like the 15t, but in lower gears it seems that the rev increase due to the small sprocket is greater than in higher gears. At a registered 70mph in top gear only gave about a 500 rev increase, so higher speed cruising is virtually unaffected.
I actually like what Im hearing about the 15 tooth, One question tho hows the 15 tooth act at low speeds in low 1st or 2st gear?
Quote from: mountindewGShow's the 15 tooth act at low speeds in low 1st or 2st gear?
What do you mean by "act?"
It's not that different... More torque... Little more pull... It's not a HUGE change... Just a nice improvement to speeds under 80.
Well Iv'e been reading more and more post and Im thinking of getting the 15 tooth.
I thinking of one also how hard is it to change? Also I found them for $12 anyone cheaper.
Changing the sprocket is EASY, escpecially if you have the Clymer manual, although you can skip several steps, like taking off the rear body work, and disconnecting the clutch. Just make sure you tighten you chain afterwards.
Alright, Thank everyone for your help. All I have his the owner's manual, and I don't think that what your talking about right?
One last question, Where are all of you guys getting your 15 tooth sprocket? and which one fits the 2004 suzuki Gs500F?
I got mine from a Suzi dealer...
14 T is FUN
chains are cheap!
Im going to go with the 15 tooth sprocket
