Ugh...so sorry to hear about your poor GS. Glad to hear that it sounds as though you came through it as well as could be expected. Check in again when you're up to it....hopefully, the bike isn't as bad as you're fearing....

I was very blessed... I've got a pretty bad back soft tissue injury and some scrapes on my ass... They did some xrays and a catscan and didn't find any fractures on my back but they want to do them again Tuesday after the swelling goes down a little. I probably won't be back on two wheels for at least a month or so... Just in time for winter!

I didn't even hear it coming, I was slowing down for some traffic and next thing I know I'm flying through the air with my body higher than the Kia Sportage in front of me... I tucked my head as close to my knees as possible and landed flat on my lower back...

Now here's where lectures start... I wasn't wearing a helmet or a jacket, just glasses and gloves. Everybody at the hospital was amazed that I wasn't in much worse shape.

Insurance... Of course! I'm an insurance agent for a living so I've got 100/300K uninsured motorist bodily injury and a $100 collision deductible.

Just to add something. The insurance company I work for will write policies for people that don't have any documentation for being here. It's a shame this guy didn't feel the need to have insurance. Matter of fact the accident happened about 3 blocks from work...

I kind of feel sorry for the guy, he was arrested as a "John Doe" and taken to the franklin county jail. He'll be held there for two months or until he can provide some sort of ID.

Damn... Jail for 2 months over a traffic accident... That's pretty harsh for an accident.

would you feel the same way if the driver had put you in a wheelchair, or worse a coffin. It's an unpleasant thought.

Yea Glad you're OK enough to feel sympathy for the guy, but you'd ahve to imagine it from your loved ones point of view ... wife, mother, father etc ... Yea turn him over to them I say ... But yes toss him in the cooler, or make him pay you for all your medical, pain and bike ...
Cool.

It is harsh for a traffic accident... but the guy knew the risks.
If I were an illegal, I would make sure to not attract any undue attention my way, which means *not* causing any traffic accidents.

The stakes were just higher in his situation, which is all the more reason to be a safe/defensive driver.  You said that the guy rear-ended you, so i'm inclined to think that it was his fault.

I am sure that both of you would rather like it if the whole incident/accident had never happened... but I am going to chime in with the other folks who have posted and tell you to be glad that the bad luck fell on him being stuck in jail instead of  you being seriously injured (or worse).

After all, if he really *is* an illegal, then theoretically he should be able to make his way back even if they do deport him... which means he won't really have suffered much of a setback in the grand scheme of things.

Our country was founded on people coming here. My grandfather included (Irish). Unfortunatly the American dream doesn't always include insurance. My view on the subject is "if they're here let them stay"

People come to our country to work and make their lives better. We should let them get driver's licenses and bank accounts. Hell, we should even tax thier income. People are going to work, they're going to drive, and they'll spend some of their money here and send some out of the country. There's no way to stop it. Unfortunatly most people don't think the same way I do. The expense of deporting somebody from Ohio would be far greater than a border town. It just doesn't happen and I'm not really excited that my tax dollars are going to keep a guy in jail for two months for a traffic accident. Yeah it could have been worse. And after more tests Tuesday it might be worse. But what it all boils down to is an accident.

Funny thing, my jacket is still hanging in the office and the helmet was hanging from the helmet hook... It was shot out into oncoming traffic when he hit me... It was bad judgement on my part... I was at work and running down the street to little store on my lunch break... I'm very fortunate that it wasn't a whole lot worse.

I got to take a look at the bike today, it's pretty trashed. The wileyco and a mirror were busted clean off the bike. Fairings trashed, undertail, hugger and whole tail section trashed.. The forks were bent but it looks like the frame and gas tank are okay. I imagine the the rear suspension is probably trashed as well.

I got to look at the camry the guy was driving, it was busted up pretty good in the front end.

See? You should wear a helmet no matter the distance you are traveling! Even if you're just going around the block, the risk that something will hapen is still there. Same with jackets! Skin grafts are ugly and expensive! Glad you're okay, though!

I crashed 2 blocks from my house, but was wearing my helmet thankfully. I'd be dead without it.

Wait a sec both of you ... Illegal aliens do pay taxes ... no one in america excet drug dealers gets away wihtout paying taxes. That is not what makes them illegal. I know because I am a Legal Immigrant. Plenty of difference. Illegals are not allowed to live or work here. To work you need a category of visa H 1-B, 2 or 3, L - 1 or a TN if you're canadian/mexican for an american employer, and B - 1 for a foreign employer. Most Illegals at one time came in legit as a visitor. OK those drifing across the border is now a new addition, none the less, they are not allowed to work. You need to obtain one of those visas before legally working, and each of the visas typically are given to well educated and qualified people only. You'd have to be an engineer with some serious education/experience to get a H1-B, TN or L1, professional Nurses and medial assistants are gived H-2's H-3 - Dont remember but its similar. So you really cannot get a Visa to do lawn mowing under any circumstances ... so illegals are doing that sorta work and that is what makes them illegal. The non tax part comes in differently. They dont have anyhitng to do with paying it. Who ever pays them usually american legit businesses sometimes in case of odd jobs like yard work etc prefer to keep it off the books, and not pay employment taxes etc ... its usually a small percentage of the illegals income. Its like us trading bike parts. IRS will collect taxes on people regardless of immigration status, Immigration is supposed to find and deport the illegals but there are so many illegals and so few Immigration officials that they cannot do so. However the receiving country is charged with the deportations and holding costs. usually if there is a airline involved like from India before we get on a plane they check our eligibility to enter and stay in the US. if they find out I am not eligible to in the US, I'll be tossed in a holding cell and put on the next Indian flight to India. The holding costs will be charged to India and my passport will be marked as having a illegal attempt to enter. Yea before you clowns get any ideas ... I have never been an illegal alien, and Now I have a green card ... so  :guns:  :guns:
Cool.

I believe this guy slipped through our open door border. Can't blame him, I like living here too.

My insurance company said to get the bike out of impound and send them the bill. Then get a repair estimate and send that in too.

Man... I just got off the phone with a couple suzuki dealers... Would you believe they charge $80 an hour for a repair estimate? One said they would charge a flat $174 for an estimate but waive the fee if I have it repaired at their shop. If it's totaled the salvage buyer has to pay the fee. I'm a little sketchy about that deal, I might be the salvage buyer.

Not to mention the Aluzio undertail and hugger, like they've ever seen one of those before. And what about my custom paint? I'm about to get robbed... I'm sure the thing is probably totaled but since it's my insurance company paying the claim they'll be paying as if it was my fault. That means actual cash value less my $100 deductible. If the other guy had insurance I would probably be able to settle for more...

Okay... Picked the bike up from the impound and took it to a dealer. They'll be doing my official estimate Tuesday but the guy said it's pretty much totaled. On a good note they said it was best looking GS they've seen. The one guy said the tailsection and hugger make it look like a real sportbike...

My buddy took some pictures and he'll email them to me in the next day or two... I'll post a couple after I get his email.. I'm looking forward to this estimate, I might just buy the salvage back from the insurance company if it's not too bad.

If you do end up getting it back with a salvage title, try Mid-Ohio Honda/Suzuki in Mt. Vernon to get it fixed, it is only $60 an hour and I may be able to get you a god deal on the parts.

Sorry about the wreck and I hope your feeling better.   Where abouts in Columbus do you live?

If the bike gets totalled will you end up getting another GS or move up?
Title: Goodbye to another F
Post by: fettcols on September 14, 2005, 06:56:29 AM
blazinjr- Right now I'm renting a house in Whitehall for couple more weeks. I'm buying a house in north bexley with a closing date this month. Damn it's going to suck moving with my back all banged up but I'm still pretty excited to buy my first house. (with a decent sized heated garage!)

I'm not sure if I'll buy another GS or move on up... I found a good deal on an old '96 a while back, maybe I'll do both! I'm going to have to wait until I close on the house before I can finance another bike, but I'm sure by back won't let ride for at least a month or so. Hell, I couldn't ride right now just from all of the painkillers I've been taking.

I don't know if it's totaled yet. The insurance company doesn't know. I have to jump through some hoops and show the dealer how to find all the aftermarket parts that are on it so they can add that to the estimate. But since it's going through my collision coverage the insurance company will probably only pay for stock parts. I'll just have to argue with them to get a fair deal, maybe even just for the custom paint.

The insurance company called me this morning to let me know they'll be cutting me a check for the towing and impound fees I paid Monday. Would you believe that the bike was crashed Saturday afternoon and by Monday afternoon the towing and storage bill was over $175...

Damage total less the aftermarket parts?

$4169.58    Thats without the undertail, hugger, exhaust, tail lights. Let alone the custom paint.

First offer from the insurance company?

$3600

Title: Goodbye to another F
Post by: fettcols on September 22, 2005, 03:30:47 PM
$3600 was before my $100 deductible. I did some online shopping and found 23 F modles for sale with an average price of $4400. That's a little higher than I think mine is worth. I was thinking like $4200. Even with all the mods I might be selling myself short but that's what I think is fair.

The insurance company says I have to find two vehicles with similar mods and similar miles for sale and they'll average the the prices and settle for that amount. They'll subtract my deductible and add taxes and title fees and a little extra for the helmet that was trashed (it was hanging on the helmet hook when I got hit).

So anybody selling an '04 with custom paint, clip-ons, undertail/hugger, exhaust and jets?

Edit: With around 5800 miles?

I swear to God they should just give you exactly how much it would take you to put together that exact same bike, regardless of what you decide to do with the money. It's totally not your fault, so why should you get less than it's worth and be forced to spend your own money for some cocknose's mistake?

Bullshit  :bs:  :bs:  :bs:

After a couple arguments and a few hours of searching online classifieds it's settled. I had to find similar vehicles with similar miles for sale and send documentation to the adjuster...

We've determined the value $4535.... Not a bad deal.

i say deport his ass once he works off the debt to pay for repairs, deductables, hardships, then he can read the imigration book on the boat back so he can apply the correct way after a 2 year injunction against his filing for being found guilty of being an ileagle alien.

dont have an issue with imigrants comeing in, aslong as they all go through the same processes the law demands.  dont want to hear no hardship BS, no nothing,  apply and go thrugh the proper channels.

Wowee ... my favorite - an 1127 ... but you got shim over buckets with rocker arms ... yea weird ... they had some cases where the shim flew off ... but its a tiny ass shim and not really as dangerous as the GS ... see f you can switch out rockers arms with a older 1127 ... someone used to make ratio rockers for them ... some 1.25 will wake it right up ...
