Ok, riding from my house to the dealership to pick up a new visor for my helmet. It's about anywhere from 35-40 miles to the dealership,
My girlfriend is on the backseat.
All is fine for the trip there, on the way back maybe 2 miles from my house, theres sudden and seriously hard lurch and i begin to slow down from cruising at 80mph rapidly. :o Immediate reaction was give it a tit more throttle to see if i was out of gas due to those lurches ya get when your out of gas,......nothing so reaction was switching to reserve. As im doing this i look down to see im only at 80 miles on this tank and im like WTF :x ..... reserve aint the problem, Kick on my blinker and pull over on the interstate since im now going 40 or so and seriously slowing down. Went to put on brakes and couldn't pull the front brake lever it was rock solid. :o
Process of elimination led me to believe front brake had locked down. As soon as we stop and get off, theres a bad burning smell confirming my brake theory. Turn of the bike, let it sit for a second, smoke a cigarette cause im freaking out, start it back up and try the brake lever again and it barely moves, try again and again slowly working out to an almost normal brake lever feel. Brakes work fine, pull forward about 10 feet, stops and is normal so i go home.
Any ideas on what the hell happend cause im stumped and i dont wanna ride a bike where the front brake randomly locks up. :dunno:
If the front brake lever would not move AT ALL I would say it is the master cylinder piston getting jammed somehow. If it was a problem with the caliper you would still have lever movement (expanding brake lines would cause some deflection while squeezing lever). If it was me I would be replacing the master cylinder and checking over the caliper REALLY well. Brakes are no joke, even if it is fine now who knows when you will be scooting along and need to stop quickly and don't have 80+ % of your stopping power... :o
yea, sounds like some crud blocked the return oriface or lever was mildly pulled. some follks like riding with 2 fingers on the lever at all times, sometimes, they down realise they are pulling the lever a tad absentmindedly
When was the last time you bled the brakes? When was the last time you changed the brake fluid?
Last year I had a Ducati lock up his fronts due to water heating up and expanding in his brake lines and locking up his brakes.
