If a forum is taking up too many system resources of a web server, there's something seriously wrong with the hosting provider. I'm sure you and John have a handle on it, but just in case, please let me know if you need any help picking out a new provider. I've taken my company's sites and personal site through several providers. There are tons of extremely reliable and cost effective plans out there. :thumb:

Alright, I'll try and make this the last post I make for the rest of the week.

remove sigs, avatars, icons, etc. forbidd img posting and only make em available as links

leave everything as text only and you will see how much resources/bandwidth you save.

its not bandwidth, the server is taking too much CPU cycles to serve this site..

I think its something with teh database, im still investigating. Our db size is only 170mb.. it shouldnt be affecting things. I think tehy got something configured wrong on their side. THe stuff they sent me really shouldnt be makign this server bog.

then maybe change the variable
max_connections
see more info in the following pages.
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/too-many-connections.html
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/user-resources.html

must restart mysql server after any variable changes.

does that include posts about the color purple?

I'm not much of a database expert, but it seems if the server can't handle a forum where the avatars are not even hosted, it isn't a very good server IMHO. With the exceptions of a few emoticons, some photos in the Wall Of Fame, we're pretty much text only right?

You know what I think would make a big difference? A GSTWIN.com CHAT ROOM. How cool would that be? There are a LOT of posts where people basically use the forum as a chat room. Then you need to wade through a million posts to find something useful, anyways.

Can one of the admins set up a chat room for this purpose? The forum is a great place for posting information, asking questions, etc. But the one or two word chat-style responses would be better in a chat room. And if there were areal-time chat room, I bet a lot of us would use it.

Anyone think thats a good idea?  :dunno:

PURPLE posts should be exempt, but I'm still being a very good girl today and not post whoring like YOU.  :P

And so that no one can say I'm simply PURPLE post whoring here, I'm going to address the above, too:
Actually, I think this is a great idea, being that I'm one of the guilty chatty cathy types here. :P

To that end, if anyone wants to add me to their Yahoo IM, my nickname is pandyz2010 there. Just put GSTwin in the msg part so I'll know to automatically add you. ;)

Thats right the forum actually is mostly text based with a few pics host.  Most if not all the forums are text only.  And a chat room would be cool for those long boring nights at work.

Email me at the address that I registered with if you are interested in hosting. I can hook you up with a good server for cheap, or you can provide your own at my datacenter here in LA.

What kind of server does it have to be. I got a few rack SUN sparc 10 servers and my home linux box officespace just went down but it was a dual 550 P3 and it ran soild for 3 years until teh damn PSU blew.

Co Lo will be great but i got lots of options to look into. I have a few from my own that i know are good.

This POS web host couldtn handle 14% CPU load, my home server officepsace takes more than that. So we are an active site, but that's just not it. I am goign to call john and have a long chat with him this evening.

I think that people should throw in some money to get rid of phpbb and get vbulletin, IMHO.

It can be any box that I assume would be running apache/php etc, (please god no windows boxes..). You would be up to administrating it yourself, unless you would like someone here to take care of it, which is extra. If you provide the box, it is significantly cheaper then if you rent a dedicated server from us, we just charge for the space, power and bandwidth of course. 1u would be best, we can provide as many IP addresses as you need as well. Up to 2 rack units  /w 4 amp power (includes two plugs) and 24/7 emergency support with unlimited reboots at a highly competitive rate. Any remote hands (people doing anything more then rebooting a machine or moving a cable.) are man hours and will depend on your support contract or technician hours purchased. (not required for purchase..) The server can be whatever you want, chat server etc... just no spam relays.. you know the drill I am sure. Let me know and I can get you a quote for whatever you would like. :)

Just so you know, the blend is Level3, Global Crossing, XO, WVFiber, UUNET. We can also provide direct carrier feeds as well, or a cross connect. Equinix is also available as we are just upstairs. The colocation is located at "The Carrier Center" at 7th and Grand in Down Town Los Angeles.

I will cut you a great deal anyway as I do appreciate the great resource you provide.

Best of luck, hope you get everything fixed.

I WOULD GET ANOTHER HOST HASTA LE' PRONTO EVEN IF IT IS NOT WITH ME.....THESE GUYS ARE TOTALLY INCOMPETENT.

FYI.. just a note.. I would have the host check out your shared server there is really odd activity on it. I bet that since it is a c-panel machine that it has been owned and is being used as a spam relay. (That is probably what is causing the issue with the database, especially if a kernel based rootkit has been installed..) This machine has been hacked a number of times as well as the zone-h defacement archives state so. Looks like the switch being bogged is also a possibility.. they have lots of traffic pumping through that poor hp procurve.. and the web interface turned on to boot! If you scroll through the logs you can see that your port (#17) keeps resetting as well.

Here...

http:... check out the switch you are connected to... they are dumbasses and never put a password for the web interface. Lovely! Great to know that you could take out a couple hundred websites and 22 servers in one shot! I could shut off the port that your server is connected to and they would never know.

OMFG.. I have never seen such lax in security. I mean even my linux box is more secure than this.. and leaving a L3 switch open.. damn!

If you think that is bad. Let me just say that I do not dare post the information to their routers as that would leave the potential for someone reading this to cause extreme damage and take out their entire business. At least this way it is only the one switch, just a small taste of how their whole operation is working..

I have seen worse. It really just shows serious incompetence as their whole network (25 or so machines) could be run by a staff of three with proper design and regular upkeep. You would be surprised how many hosting providers are run by pinheads, or their budget has been cut so far by the higher ups that they are left with a swiss cheeze network.

I audit and re-design enterprise class networks for a living, you would be surprised what *cough*... a large auction site, some large *achoo*... financial companies and a number of other *cough cough*... gov agencies for a couple countries... look like that ALL deal with SERIOUSLY personal data look like from the inside out. It would scare the living crap out of you.
