Title: A couple of concerns about my bike?
Post by: BigTwin on September 14, 2005, 01:27:43 PM
I recently replaced my front fork tubes to replace bent ones, and now that I put the forks back on it looks like the front wheel is not centered in between the fork legs. The wheel is straight but it sits closer to the right fork leg than the left, it's not much, but it isn't centered.

I was wondering if anybody else has noticed this on their bikes? I put the front wheel back on the same way I took it off. I think that it can't be perfect, but I want to see what others have to say, so if you could look at your bikes and see if it is similar to what I'm explaining that would be nice.

A couple last things, when I spin the front wheel I hear a strange noise (not brake drag), but rather like when it hits a certain spot in the rotation it sorta clicks. What could this be? Possibly the speedometer gear?

Also, when the bike is off (not sure if this happens when it's on, haven't ran it in over 3 months) and I put it in to 1st gear and pull the clutch in it is very hard to roll, is this normal? I figured that with the clutch in that it should roll freely.

If anybody can check on these things for me I would GREATLY appreciate it.

THANKS, BigTwin

Yes, it is normal.

This is helpful when rolling a bike out of truck bed. I put it in gear and feather the clutch letting it and transmission create a little drag to slow it down.

What about the front wheel, can anyone check to see if it isn't perfectly centered and if my clicking noise is normal? I don't exactly know what is making the noise and I can't pinpoint the location.

THANKS, BigTwin

...due to wet clutch and cold oil = viscosity drag.  When the oil is warm, it's easy to roll the bike in gear with the clutch disengaged.

The click from the front wheel sounds like it could be a wheel bearing......

It's the way it's supposed to be,while the click you hear might suggest bearing failure(easy to check).
