Post by: vtlion on September 17, 2005, 08:16:47 PM
did Mortal Kombat ever get released for the ORIGINAL 8-bit nintendo?  If so when?  during its hay-day, or later, when SNES and Genesis ruled the landscape?

we have a bet going... expert opinions appreciated  :)

Hey-day, heyday.

2. The stage or period when excited feeling is at its height; the height, zenith, or acme of anything which excites the feelings; the flush or full bloom, or stage of fullest vigour, of youth, enjoyment, prosperity, or the like. Often associated with day, and taken as the most flourishing or exalted time.

1751 SMOLLETT Per. Pic. (1779) II. lxviii. 221 Our imperious youth..was now in the heyday of his blood. 1768 STERNE Sent. Journ. (1775) 86 (Hotel at Paris), I was interrupted in the hey-day of this soliloquy, with a voice. Ibid. 135 (Maria, Moulines) To travel it through the sweetest part of Francein the hey-day of the vintage. 1807-8 W. IRVING Salmag. (1824) 143 In the good old times that saw my aunt in the hey-day of youth. 1824 SCOTT St. Ronan's iii, In his heyday he had a small estate, which he had spent like a gentleman. 1831 LYTTON Godolphin 38 In the flush and hey~day of youth, of gaiety, and loveliness. 1839 LONGFELLOW Hyperion IV. ii, The heyday of life is over with him. 1873 SYMONDS Grk. Poets vii. 232 In the bloom and heyday of the young world's prime. 1877 MRS. OLIPHANT Makers Flor. xiv. 346 He was no more than thirty-six, in the hey-day of his powers.

I wanted an etymology.  Oh well.

There was no version of Mortal Kombat ever released for the NES. It's first appearance was on the SNES.

yeah, see that's what I thought.  I'm pretty sure it was made for the Sega Master System, but not the 8-bit nintendo.  Those consoles were on the way out in the early 90's (when MK came out).

I will say I do not know specifically of Mortal Kombat in this case.  But it is possible that it came out on an 8-bit system even though those were pretty much dead when MK came into existance.  It just would not have been from Midway or such.  Possibly a home brew or another country were the 8-bit system had a much longer life span (still not made by the owning company and in any way offical).   Or even just a version coded to run on emulators.  I've seen home brew games that were knock-off or more recent games for atari 2600 emulators and such.

MK I came out on the Genesis, SNES, and gameboy (black and green), officially in the US.  When MK came out, NES games really weren't coming out anymore.

mk was the game to have for genesis and street fighter was the game to have for snes.  I know this because we had both in the apt. and we didn't get much schoolwork done that semester.

MK was a budget game for the genesis.

Mortal Kombat on Genesis nearly caused a  1/3 of my buddies to fail out of college.  I recall times where there would be 11 or 12 dudes in my room playing MK, winner stays round robin.  On MK III, I could do every character's Fatality, Friendship, and Animality, all variations.  But I wasn't the best.  We actually had to ban my roommate from using Kabal and Sub-zero.  Freeze, 11 hit combos, etc.  I still hate that dude.

But it was never out on an 8 bit platform. . . IMO.
