I wasn't paying attention today and over-rev'ed my bike. I just wound it up in 1st gear and put it up too high.
I didn't notice anything until it seemed like the engine just cut out. One minute I was accelerating like crazy and the next it just stopped like I had hit the brakes. I checked the tach and it was ~11500. I very quickly backed off and I didn't have the courage to check whether the behavior would happen again.
I don't know what a rev limiter feels like, but if it cuts the spark plugs like I've heard it does, I'd imagine it would feel like you went from acceleration to engine braking in a hurry, which is exactly what my bike did.
Maybe the F's have a limiter?
On the other hand, if it doesn't have a limiter, what was I feeling? I paid very close attention to the engine after that point and couldn't detect anything different- sound, feel, or otherwise.
What's valve float feel like while it's happening?
Just free rev the motor in neutral, it should bounce off of redline if its got a rev limiter..
It is possible there is a rev limiter on the F since they are using an electronic tach.
11,5k is where you will hit valve float. Valve float is like a fast tapping/buzzing sound. It does not stop or slow you down hard but you will lose some power. Nothing to worry about for the limited instances. Long term abuse may cause some major head problems.
I HIGHLY doubt your bike has a rev-limiter. To my knowledge there aren't any computers on the Fs, and it takes a computer to have a rev-limiter (at least to my knowledge). Maybe, one of the resident geniuses can tell you what you experienced. Down-load some 'stunt' videos, and you should hear what a rev-limiter sounds like, kinda a "wawawwawawawawwawawawawawa" sound or "rararararararararararar" sound. I'm sure my description of the sound helped. :bs:
I am pretty much positive the '05 don't have a limiter because I have encountered valve float about 3 or 4 times. Mine starts floating around 11,200 RPM. It was not like putting on the brakes or quickly slowing, but just the buzz/tap and no more acceleration. I don't like the sound myself so quickly grabbed the next gear :o

I have an 05 and am also positive that here is no rev limiter. My valves float at a little over 11k rpm like the rest have stated before.
Yeah, I guess "nenenenenenenenenene" is another valid description. :lol: Maybe if you combine all those sounds you might have an idea of how a rev-limiter spells. :lol:
the "nenenenenenenene" is more the dirtbike sound though, no?

The valvetrain movement no longer follows the contour of the cam as it is turning. The RPM of the cams is so quick that the valves will stay partially open all the time. The valve springs cannot return the valve to the closed position before the cam lobe is back to open the valve. Hence valve is "floating" and not following the cam movenent. Might be an easier way to explain all that :dunno:
