Title: post 2000 tank on a pre 2000 bike?
Post by: red_phil on September 20, 2005, 03:28:36 AM
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has tried mounting a post 2000 fuel tank on a pre 2000 bike.
I use my GS for touring sometimes and I believe the newer tank is 21 litres rather than 17. This would be a good thing (TM).

My seat is probably needing recovered soon so now might be a good time to do this as I think I might need to swap to a post 2000 seat too.

Are the new seats any better or worse for long distance riding?

you cannot mix and match the tank and seats easily.  furthermore, i don't think you can mix and match seats and rear plastics either.  at least not without modification.

OK I thought you could fit just the tank off the 01+ on an 89-00 ... seat and sides off the 89-00 may work ... not tried it ... shouldv'e when I had Tarzanboy's bike ... but you fit the side covers and the seat has to be 01+ and a whole lotta new problems come up.
Cool.
Srinath.

Now That IS good news.

I think it looks good.
Perhaps a couple of small thigh pads on the bottom corners of the tank would make it fit even better.

*ponders*

Right, now all I need to do is visit a few of the local breaker yards and find a cheap tank from a more recent GS.

ahhh. breaker yards.
best place to go for "lightly" used car and bike parts.

my tank came off ebay, 80 US dollars for the tank off a wrecked bike. it was nicely dented too. buy deffinently on better shape then my previous one.

good luck, keep us posted.
