Title: Engine life
Post by: mattv on September 21, 2005, 04:39:47 PM
I'm sure this has been asked a million times - I tried the search but didn't come up with what I'm looking for .
Anyways- What is the  typical engine life on a gs500e?  I'm looking to get my first bike and was initially thinking of getting a ninja 250 - but my neighbor is selling a 1998 gs500e w/ about 20k miles on it for $1500.
Reading the ninja250 boards it sounded  like engine life for them was about 30k. So  I guess it comes down to is  $1500 a fair price for a 1998 gs500e w/ 20k miles and how long can I expect it to last me?

The general consensus seems to be that the engine is bulletproof, and will last until the end days.  Buy your neihgbors bike.  It's a good deal, and a good bike (so they say).

Besides, you don't really want a Ninja 250, do you?   It's a girl bike.  ;)

If the guy has been keeping the maintenance up with the GS, I'd say $1500 isn't bad at all. Welcome to the forums.

Id recomend checking the compression first, I boguht a 99 with 20k on it and it only has 90pounds in each cylinder. 1500 sounds like a deal to me.

Wow! I wasn't expecting this much response.  Thanks for the welcome!

Hahah - I'm sure the dudes at the hayabusa boards are saying the samething about the gs500.  But yeah, I'm sure I'd be happier with a 500.

Can I do that when I go check the bike out or will I need to take it in to the shop?

dude do you even have a bike?

There's nothing wrong with the ninja 250.  Its got an incredible power/weight ratio.  Plus it weighs 80-90 lbs less than the gs and handles well for a $3k bike.  Gets great gas mileage too.  Im no kawasaki fan, but honda doesn't make a 250 sportbike in the US anymore, so that leaves the ninja.

Oh yeah, I have 18k on my bike and its still runnin' strong.  :)

Shut up, I'm working on it.

At least I know how to ride a bike now.  I had probably 100 posts before I even knew how to ride a motorcycle.  :)

My 89 has 52 K on it.  Multiple owners, so likely varying degrees of maintenence on it.  Burns a little oil but runs beautifully.

No, because I *still* don't have a GS, have been here longer, have more posts than you do, am cooler than you are, got a higer score on the MSF test than you did, and have color-co-ordinated riding gear.  So go crawl under a rock and die.

I'm working on the bike issue.  I 'm a catch-and-release fisherman is all...

I don't have any bike at all, you have been here longer (so, 1 point), I have more posts per day, I highly doubt you're cooler than me (very few people, most of them rock stars, are), I got 10 points off, so it's possible, and all my gear is  blue.  :nana:
