Title: Waxing your gs
Post by: Mr.7 on September 22, 2005, 09:47:05 AM
I like to wax my bike and helmet often so that when my bike gets coated with bugs it makes it easier to clean. Which wax do you think works the best. From what I've seen most waxes are all the same.  :)

I use Meguiars- it has 3 products (a cleaner, a polish, & a wax) that they call their "Deep Crystal System" - I use both Number 2 and 3 and then i coat it all with 2 coats of , a thick, chunky AWESOME smelling AWESOME shining wax - (can't find the name of the damn stuff) but your bike will smell so good you'll want to eat it! - I think it's the "Cleaner" wax, but I'm not sure - I'll look it up for you

DON"T use turtle wax, that stuff is shite!

I love that 3-step system. And it really does smell good. But don't taste it; just trust me  ;)

M Mistress, this is what you're referring to?

Good shaZam! right there. Made my Monte look sexy. But why isn't it selling?  :dunno:

I found Meguiar's Gold Class wax to be terrible (wouldn't last).  I use their #26 High-Tech Yellow in liquid.  Best wax I've found for the price and ease of application - nice deep shine, lasts as long as I care to go between detailings.

I wash with Gold Class car wash between detailings.  I wash with dish soap and a soft mitt to strip the wax when it's time to do that.  I only use polish if there's a scuff that isn't coming out with elbow grease and soap; polish will take a little bit off of the paint, so I like to be sparing with it.  I use a different sponge for the wheels (brake dust is corrosive to paint) and Griot's Wheel Cleaner (green stuff, smells good, works great, $10 for a bottle that will last forever).

2005 - it's actually in a red container as a paste with applicator deal

I'm pretty sure it's this stuff but I don't remember it saying "cleaner" when I bought it.

grrrr.

Anyway, you slide right off your tank with this stuff! it's the BOMB!

Yeah I use Meguire's Hi Tech Yellow Wax in the paste form and it rocks.
It dries clear so if you have a little "over-waxing" it is not as noticable. But the nicest thing is that it lasts for a while, compared to the Gold Class which sucks.

I use Zimol or something like that. Its expensive, but a bottle of car wax lasts like 50x longer on a bike (especially a naked bike). Also, it smells like delicious, delicios bananas. The small is rivaled only by that rainbow foam Sheetz' carwashes spray. If they sold that damn smell....

RoadsterGal, did you happen to be in Portland last night, dressed up as a man? I saw a dude "cruise" by my house on a Burger. I've never seen one outside of the stealership, so I figured it was you. In a man costume. And much heavier than in pictures.  :dunno:

Yes, I do that every so often just to keep folk on their toes.

Every time I go by Aurora Suzuki, they're selling another Burger.  A big dude was buying a 650 yesterday when I went to pick up the pants I bought.  I rolled my eyes and said, "Silver scooter?  Some people have no taste..."

BTW, paging RVertigo.  They have a new line of scooters there, 50cc and 150cc Suzuki engines.
Edit: These:

They looked a lot less plasticky than most scooters in person.  One of the employees said the 150 would happily do 50mph and still have some left.

Sweet...  I like those...  I'd have to get a motocross helmet and some goggles.

The boss (aka wife) pretty much guilted me out of talking about them any more...  I think I'll wait a month and start up again...  It'll probably be too cold to convince her to even think about one...

She's getting a parking pass.     DAMN!!!  That $90 a month would pay for a new scoot in 30 months!

I'm just going to mirror what everyone else is saying here. Meguiar's Gold Class is the absolute best thing you can get as far as consumer products go. We are family friends with a family owned auto detail shop. They detail every car for auto dealership in the surrounding area. They swear by Meguiar's and so do I.

If Meguiar's is the best than I'm doin' pretty good because I've been using their NexTec stuff. At least that is what I think it is called.

I would like to compliment this thread's participants for the absence of carrot-waxing jokes.

My detailer recommended "Mothers California Gold" Carnauba Cleaner Wax (a paste) as a good  one step cleaner/wax.  He was right.  It works great and looks good. Nice for those of us who don't always keep up with waxing and don't want to put the time into a multi step process.  Price approx $9.00.

+1 Good stuff S100 paste wax.  Same as P21S paste wax as well.  Gives pretty good depth on darker colors.  Really need to apply it (as well as most carnauba's) every month or two depending on climate or if it is garaged.

I would suggest not using a cleaner wax over the Meguiars 3 step shine, or their step #2 polish.  The cleaner wax will strip away the oils and fillers that help to give it the "polished" look.

Oh, and wheterver you do don't use dish soap to wash the bike or you just wasted all your time waxing cause it will strip everything off.  I have been using Meguiars NXT wash and it seems to work well. :thumb:

Well I looked at my wax this am and it IS the gold class. Sorry! That's my 3rd step (since I never use the 1st step of the mcguires polish)

Sorry for the confusion.

For people with fine swirls, insect blemishes or fine scratches Meguiars ScratchX 2.0 is good stuff

Follow it up with a wax

The Liquid Ice wax is freaking awesome. I wax the whole bike with it, tank, frame, plastic, fork, rubber....

I only use Zaino products on my car and my bike:

http://www.zainostore.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=Zaino

I haven't given the bike a "detail yet" but I will be soon. Zaino is very expensive, the z-cs that I use as a top coat for everything costs $29.95 for a 6oz bottle, but it's worth it. All of their products cover a huge surface area compared to what you have to mix up. When I mix up a 2oz bottle of z-2/zfx I can put 7+ coats on my car. I can also put a coat of the z-cs over my entire car, windows included, in about 10 pumps of the sprayer.

To give you an idea of how good Zaino products looks, here's a few pictures of my 11 year old car with original paint after last spring's detail (keep in mind that white is the hardest color to show any depth in).

Shaded (and we all know shaded pictures are cheating, so I'll post some direct sunlight pictures too:

Does it make sense to use a product that costs this much on a bike as cheap as a GS? Probably not. Do i care? Nope. lol. since the GS doesn't fly past everyone like all these other bikes do, It better look good because people are going to see it for a longer period of time and will notice more flaws.

+1 for Meguiars, I use a product called quick shine..it's in a spray bottle. I squirt it onto a cloth to apply, let it dry and then buff off. It smells like bubblegum and gives a nice deep shine. Any Meguiars product will cost more than a brand like turtle...but the results are well worth it..and a little goes a long way. :thumb:

I agree that TurtleWax Liquid Ice is great for motorbikes as it doesn't matter if you get it into nooks or crannies. It all dry's clear.

The only problem I have with Liquid Ice is it doesn't remove stuck on debris (stubborn bug splats etc) like some polishes.

I've been using Kit wax and their wash for awhile now and I'm very impressed with them both. There both pretty inexpensive and give a great shiny, clean finish. my 2 cents....
