Title: Gear review - MotoGP Alpine pants
Post by: Roadstergal on September 24, 2005, 09:41:19 PM
Aurora Suzuki had the standard men's pants at the store, and they fit fine, so I went ahead and ordered the Alpine pants in that men's size, even though they do offer women's sizes (although the woman's pant has one thigh pocket instead of two - WTF?).
http://www.rapidracer.com/moaltemopa.html

They're waaaaarm. Very insulated. I took out the zip-out liner, and it's still pretty warm; with the liner, it's toasty. The pants have a nice snug fit, with enough stretch paneling to allow you to walk comfortably. My one gripe, and a thing where the web pics and the pics in the catalog are deceptive - they're flared-leg pants, not fitted, so you have to wrap them to tuck them into the boot. The pockets are very handy, especially the thigh ones. It doesn't look like they'd be protected in a crash, though, so don't put anything that can be broken in there.
We'll see how they do when the deluge comes.
They do have a corduroy-like wiffwiffwiff when you walk.  :p

I liked them enough to order the Diva jacket today.

The UK site very similar to this one, GS500e.co.uk has a section for gear reviews, everything from clothing to luggage and bolt-ons. Might be worth thinking about here.

those look really comfy!

Good deal too! I'm a huge proponent of pockets as well - I am a firm believer that most gear doesn't have enough!

Great buy roadster!

They wouldn't come in a 36" inseam, would they?

I've been looking for leather pants for about three years now.  My frustration is the racks never have any that are long enough.

Being properly clothed can be tough for the vertically gifted.  :(

Word of advice for you guys. Don't keep anything sharp (keys, pens) metal, hard plastic, or any kind of objects that you do not want broken in your pants or jacket. I landed on my cell at one point and it broke AND left a huge bruse not to mention a rip in the jacket and a 1/2 inch gash in my leg when the thing cracked and pushed through the fabric on the pants inside. I am not really that concerned about the cellphone breaking. What I am concerned about is that if it was in my jacket and had done the same thing, i could have punctured a lung or something. I keep it in my outside pocket now, if it breaks.. it breaks. I would try and find a jacket with pockets that are far away from your hip bone too... just my two cents. That stupid gash in my leg hurt like a Buddha Loves You.

It seems that at this time of year, those of us in the middle aren't faring much better.  I guess the local higher-end gear shop must be waiting for next years restock, becuase the selection of boots & pants was pretty limited in my size, and I'm almost entirely average sized.  They had much more in one size up/one size down.  Thankfully, I was able to pick up what I was looking for, just didn't have much selection.

Ja, they had nothing that fit me at I-90.  Everything was too big.

Good point about sharp/breakable stuff in pockets!

Well, they're waterproof.  Although it wasn't torrential rain, I rode for a couple of hours total in the rain, and rode through some decently deep standing water.  Warm and dry.

Hey, you never chipped in for the Yoyo!   :P

I finally got the jacket, so here's the combo.  I took the pic with the pants out, even though I feel better about them tucked.  The reflective stuff is nicely done; the pants appear full black without a flash or headlight on them.  The S in the jacket turned out to be a nice fit.  I would have liked cuff cinches, but for the price, I'm not complaining.  The liner is very warm without being bulky, like the liner for the pants.  It has a neck cinch that keeps the wind off of my neck and keeps it from blowing down my back.
There is no connection zipper to the pants, which is a minus.  That thing poking out of the back is the back protector; I found it most comfy outside of the pants, or the pants try to buckle and fold when I stand.

I like it. Looks very tasteful (the black with the integration of the stripe).

Whats up with the weird photoshopped picture? :P

I don't want people commenting on my furniature choice and book collection.

I do think colorful gear is better for visibility than black, but the reflectivity is good, and I wear bright helmets.

As for the pants...

Quote from: Roadstergalthey're flared-leg pants, not fitted, so you have to wrap them to tuck them into the boot.
Do they have a blousing strap at the ankle to hold them wrapped, or do you just stuff?  I'd think they'd flap around like mad and possibly ride up if you didn't have them in a boot. :(

I'm thinking about picking up either a pair of FirstGear Speed or HT Sport pants to have something less bulky and a bit more armored than the HT overpants when I don't need street/work clothing underneath.  I can't find anywhere that stocks them locally to try them on (the local gear shop is pretty wiped out waiting for the '06 lines).

I'm wondering if anyone has fit feedback on either of these.  I'm 5'9", about 190# and the 34" overpants from FirstGear fit well.  I'm specifically wondering about stretchyness in the waist and thigh.  I think I'm leaning toward the Speed pants, because of the actual leather reinforcements in the knees and hips and it looks like they'd have less of the "wiffwiffwiff" corduroy sound.

Alternately, any recommendations on an online shop with a good return policy that carries the FirstGear line?

QuoteThere is no connection zipper to the pants, which is a minus.

Didn't the pants come with both halves of a zipper? When I talked to the guys at the shop where I was considering buying a bike from, they told me that most nicer pants will come with both halves of the zipper, and you can just take your jacket in, along with the spare half of the zipper to a seamstress, and have them sew the zipper onto the jacket... viola, instant connection between the two, and it probably only cost you $10... Even if the pants didn't come with a spare zipper half, couldn't you just go to a seamstress with the pants and jacket and tell them what you want? I dunno, maybe this is just a stupid post... but I tried... and when it's time to replace the sony tv in the background, get a Toshiba instead, same quality, 2/3 the price... (sorry, electronics salesman, I can't help it)
