Title: powerband
Post by: bargovic on September 27, 2005, 03:52:18 PM
So i've been breaking my new '05 in for 500 miles now.. keeping it under 5k rmps.. ive noticed at 5k it shifts nice, theres alot more power, and the sound of the engine changes...

When i hit 600, service it, and can go up to 8k rpms, will i notice more performance since i can use more of the powerband?

Also, whats your typical shift range? While breaking it in so far ive been changing gears around 4500 rpms.

You have no idea. The bike feels lethargic right now and you feel like it's underpowered...post back here when you can take it to 8K...and then to redline  :o
Surprising, to say the least.

While most GS's shaZam! right around 65mph or greater from fuel starvation, I believe what you want to know is that most of us shift anywhere over 5000 rpms (so that rpms do not drift lower than 4000).

I certainly hope that once I get a bike, it doesn't shaZam!.. but we'll see..

The powerband only STARTS to get fun at 5K. Personally, I like to keep it between 6K and 9K, where the bulk of the power is. It's WAY more fun when you can ring these babies. You can keep it lower when you cruise, but once you get to the upper powerband, you'll feel it and you'll love it.

Same...  And sometimes between 9 and 11...  Depending on how stupid I'm feeling.

I actually think that 6K to 9K and 9K to 11K are the same, just inverse. The powerband, from what I remember, does a semi-circle from 6K-11K, peaking at 8.5ish.

Mine feels like it peaks around 9-10...  But, who knows...  I'm usually watching the road and shifting when I run out of go...

Well...  A little after...

With the 15T it seems like you'd have peak power and torque earlier... hmm. My pops said he'd spring for a dyno run for me this weekend after I did the jetting and exhaust instalation. I'll post the images up, see what the good range is! :)

Heh.  I asked the same thing about a week ago:  http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20986.  I've put on almost 800 miles since then.

It really finds it's giddy'up over 6000.  I worked that out today and over the weekend...up like a shot from around 30mph to around 60mph.  Whee!  I'm still keeping it below 8000 (per manual), but it's still torquing pretty well from 6-8K.  It was a bit...surprising, I was thinking that it was going to stay lethargic feeling.  Just wait until you kick it down a gear and wind it up.

I was trying to get around a semi today, so I did just that...got moving in a hurry.  When I glanced down it was toying with 95 (oops!)   .  Of course, I think that's like 25mph, given my speedo.  ;)   Just proves once again that any idiot can twist the throttle and go fast in a straight line.

By the way...it sounds nice, too...less like an angry lawnmower.  ;)

Are you guys shifting between 6k-9k even in 1st? or are you getting to second quick and then going to the powerband to shift the rest.

LOL as for the sound, i know riding by people at 3-4k...  looks some people wonder why such a nice looking bike sounds so weak.

That's 'zactly what I did :)  Put 120 miles on it on Thursday and Friday, got service done on Saturday, took it out for a very fun ride on Saturday afternoon.  To do what?  Go shopping for gear, of course!

I think my wife truly hates me now.  :)

I do 6-11 in every gear depending on what I'm doing...  First has the most acceleration...  Even if it is a short little gear.

I'm shifting at 9K or a little higher. Sometimes lower depending on the situation. I don't like having it drop below 6K unless I'm cruisin'. It's personal preference, though.

I think it sounds the best around 7500...  Over that it start to sound whiney.

Damn, keeping it below 5k takes away all of the engines power. There is SOO much more acceleration at the 7-11k range. Have fun when you get there!

One thing I noticed and maybe it's just because of my car a V8. But it sure doesn't feel like. I looked down and I was 70. WOW I'm much faster than I thought I was at just because it's deceptive. It doesn't have that torque feeling in my stomach, but it gets there just the same.  :dunno:
