Title: thinking about takeing off the center stand
Post by: mountindewGS on September 27, 2005, 04:32:07 PM
I was wondering if anyone here has taken off there center stand? Iv'e looked at it befor and it kind of look like it attached to the botton of  rear stock and then make a piece to replays that part. Is it really that hard to do?

I'm pretty sure several people have...

But, how will you lube your chain?
Check/change your oil?
Adjust your chain tension?
etc
etc

my TL doesn't have a center stand  and I manage ok.  More of a pain to lube chain, but  not impossible.

Easy, how do you think Harley riders have been doing it all these years?

Clean and lube lower rung of chain, move the bike, repeat.
While kneeling next to bike, right hand pulls bike verticle by the throttle grip and balances it, while the left inserts the dipstick.
You are supposed to adjust your chain tension with the bike on the sidestand!

I thought Harley owners just grabbed the chain in a greasy bandana while travelling full speed down the freeway. :P

I removed my headers. (Not sure if needed but I removed mine when I installed the wileyco )  Centerstand has two bolts holding in remove the two bolts pull down on the centerstand remove the spring.  All done about 20 to 30 min.

when i took mine off i left the exhaust on. be careful of the springs that you have to put on they are quite tights and under a lot of compression i found it to be the most difficult part of the removal.

i think Pantablo said that after he removed his centerstand, he kept it around.  he was able to just slide the bolt through and put the bike up on it whenever he liked.

It is, and will save about 5 lbs of weight.

And if you didn't have a rear stand, but needed to service the bike, you can temporarily replace it by lining it up with the mounting lugs (not the same as the rear shock lug BTW) and slipping the bolts back in, and proping it up. Of course it won't stay in the stowed position by itself. But that grinding sound should keep you from driving off with it.

Out of all the people who took off their center stand...

Anyone wanna get rid one?  I just bought a 2004 GS500f 6 weeks ago, but the previous owner had it taken off.  I think she also had it lowered...

Will that make a difference installing one back on???

you'll drag it on leans which would be dangerous

My bike (1991) hasn't been lowered, and I'm minus a centerstand.  Anyone have one sitting around?

Sorry, I just dated myself. Bigtwins went to belts in '85, which means they've been running chains for about 81 years, or since 1904.
