Title: Works up to 31 MPH? Note to self...
Post by: My Name Is Dave on October 04, 2005, 08:02:17 AM
Anyone seen this? http://money.cnn.com/2005/09/08/Autos/honda_airbag.reut/

I'm all for safety advances on cycles, but I'm not sure how I feel about that one. It's not that I'm against it, I'm just not so sure it would be effective. Of course, I'd never be on a Goldwing anyways, so I guess it's moot.

I wonder what it is trying to protect against.  Rear ending or t-boning another car is all I can figure.  I'm sure they've done the testing, but it looks like it would only work if the incident involves energy transfer straight forward, otherwise, it would probably just launch you sideways.  Given that, I'm sure it is designed to hold you laterally in the seat...which makes me question how well it would work in situations where you don't necessarily want to be on the motorcycle anymore (lowside, being sandwiched between two cars, that kind of thing).

On the other hand, now all that the goldwing is missing is doors and an extra pair of wheels.

Adam Corolla had a really funny diatribe on Loveline one night about how Goldwings are really just cars. Something about how if you have a CD player, CB radio, heat, etc., you're not riding a motorcycle. Can't remember exactly what he said, but it was funny.

Not much into having explosives in my face.

I prefer mass under my ass instead.  Far more effective in a crash.   :P

Heh...I remember reading in my previous car's owner's manual that it featured a "pyrotechnic seatbelt tensioner" as a safety device.  It's essentailly a very small explosive charge that goes off in the event of an accident that is designed to take up any slack in the seatbelt.  I recall not feeling all that comfortable that I was sitting on a small bomb.  :o  I'm not sure if my current car has one.

:lol: You've got to be joking, right? An explosive seatbelt tensioner? What if it blew threw the seatbelt? Then you're f$%^ed.

is it just me, or does the pic of the airbag deployed look kind of like a fat person mooning you?

No joke.  Hey...these are the Germans. :)  According to the safety information, in the event of a "significant" frontal collision the airbags would deploy, the seatbelts get tensioned (pyrotechnically), the doors unlock, and the hazard lights go on.

I expect the tensioner worked on the belt inertia reel, not the belt itself...but I never went poking around there to see if I could figure it out.  I also believe that what actually did the work was compressed gas, but there's a tiny charge that gets the ball rolling (enough to get it classified as an explosive).

When Bimmer's break, they break in impressive ways.

I wonder how it works when  your 60 year old wife riding pillion crushes you against the bag?  I wonder if her big intercom microphone  smashes into your vertebrae severing your spinal cord.

Nice stoppie at the end BTW

Nothing new about airbags on Goldwings. I've met quite a few.
