Title: My bike is on vacation yet again...
Post by: jbeaber on October 04, 2005, 04:32:55 PM
Thank Goodness I found a good mechanic.  Seems that my starter chain broke...  All I know is that the bike will not start.  I press the start button, it makes little spinning noises in the engine but doesn't start up....  :(  Seems like a minor fix, but depressing none-the-less.  I do get to ride my girlfriend's SV in the mean time...  Man, that bike is tall and very upright.  I much prefer the clip-ons of the GS...

it could be that you are low on power steering fluid.

check your blinker fluid, cause when it get's low it is known to overload the relay and blow the fuse.

But to change the blinker fluid you need a left-handed crescent wrench.

loobing the seat helps with that problem too

Don't forget the inverted hex wrench with the special star adapter to get that drain plug outta the blinker resevoir.

he's probably just out of   blinker fluid (http://www.kalecoauto.com/fluids.htm), but how that relates to his bike not starting, I really have no idea.

ok, in all seriousness.  check the connection at the starter relay whare the thicker wire is connected with a nut onto the relay.  if you can't figure out whare it is, I'll go take a pic when i sober up.

Damn...  okay, so, geniuses all, what is the diagnosis when you press the starter button, it makes all fun mechanical noises but makes no effort to actually start?     :dunno:
Starter gear?  How does it all work down there?

either is's not getting power to the starter selinod or the starter clutch is worn and spinning.

the power probably isn't getting to the starter solenoid (I'll forgive davipu, as I know he can barely see, it's hard to type when you see two keyboards), because there's "dirt in the lines"

alrighty...  here is the analysis of what was actually wrong with my bike....  Please excuse my ignorance or mistatement of stuff.  I'm still a newb learning about all of this.
The crank and the flywheel were not engaged.  The crank was spinning without the flywheel going because the bolt came loose that keeps it all together.   So, the engine was running without the flywheel, and did some damage to the cup and cone that keep it all together.  The interface was damaged, not smooth and happy anymore.  My mechanic tightened the bolt as much as he dared to.  Evidently the flywheel went on a bit tighter than expected, which was a good sign.  He needed to grind the starter gear back a bit, but it all is working again.  it may stay happy forever, it may not  depends on how long the bolt holds.  And when it goes, most likely it would be cheaper to get a new engine....

he thinks that when it goes it wil just do the same thing, fail to start.  He doesn't think it will go on me when the bike is moving.
Any comments from the mechanically inclined out there?

i just had a similar issue, only my bolt didn't loosen it broke.  I got a machine shop to drill it out and simply replaced the bolt.

When the bolt snaps or comes loose the crank at this point isn't holding on to anything.  The crank is spinning, but that's the only thing moving on that side at this point.  I don't know anything about any cup and cone or the flywheel going on too tight.  Sounds like voodoo to me.

Don't know why any grinding would have been necessary.  Hope it works out for you.

I hope it works out for me too!  I think I will just ride it til it goes, then make my decision to either upgrade and part out the GS (no calling dibs on anything yet!) or repair....  My mechanic did suggest that when it goes next, it may be the end of the engine.  What doesn't make sense to me is why he wouldn't be able to do the same thing he just did again....  Dunno....
