Sounds like it may need to come off the bike... Could it be welded -drilled and retapped for the stock plug?
Oy ... that is a bad helicoil job ... OK may have been cos its a non blind hole ... Honestly I also thought it was over $$$ and its $27 in the US for a 6-10mm kit ... and guess what I found one on ebay for $12 and it had a few spring things used ... so I just need 2 - cam tower to valve cover bolts were stripped on my 48K ... it was a weird size ... 7mm, so I bought it and it worked like a charm ... If I need just the coild its just like $1 for 3 or so ...

How about installing a Fumoto Valve (http://www.fumotovalve.com)?
You can get these in various sizes (http://www.fumotovalve.com/merchant.cfm?id=230&step=2). Once installed, you never have to unscrew anything to drain the oil, just turn the lever.

Jared: I think the sump plate will have to come off. It's aluminium, so I'm not sure if it could be welded and re-tapped.
Xtalman: I am considering something along the lines of what you have suggested, I'm looking into bulkhead and hull fittings from boating places right now. They would go through the hole and grip the plate on both sides. I need to find one that is threaded on the inside face now.
OK I have a plan.
I'd still have to take the sump pan off the bike,but hopefully this would work longterm and not require finding a new sump.
find one of these (or similar) at a plumbing merchants.

Fit it through the hole in the sump, drilling it larger if needed.
A couple of O-rings should stop leaks.
find an end cap that fits the threads to cap the fitting.
Finding an end cap shouldn't be to hard as plumbing stuff all tends to be
in standard sizes.

I don't see why you couldn't weld. I guess it depends on the casting.
I was thinking about the Fumoto thing too... just something bugs me about a valve on there....( accidental opening...but I guess that's extremely unlikely...).
The plumbing stuff... As long as it won't leak/come loose ...I guess it would work...

I did this on a EX 500 ... brass 1/4 inch pipe if I should guess ... but yours has been opened up more ... also you need to remember its tapered ... so dont force it and no need for O rings ... taper will hold the oil in ...
