Title: Most accidents can be avoided
Post by: calamari on October 05, 2005, 05:17:25 PM
So Im doing 40mph on a regular street, and I see one car waiting for me to pass to pull out of driveway, and ahead, I see another car that seems ready to pull out of driveway too.

So at that moment, I remember what I learned in the MSF course, and I decided to assume that the second driver didn't see me, so as I go past the first one and getting close to the second one, I start to dramatically slow down... and lo and behold, the 2nd driver pulls out because he didn't see me, and just as im a few meters from him, he sees me and guess what he decides... yep, he stops right in the middle of the lane.

So Im doing some 25 now, but im aware of all of this, so there's no panic at all, so I simply practice the avoidance procedure, while I see this guy's face go white

Get used to it. The GS is my first bike.. had it for just over a month now,.. and people pull out in front of me at least once a week.  I really love it when in a situation just like you were in, the driver is looking you right in the eye as he/she is pulling out in front of you and then stops.

Its like if they either backed up, or even finished pulling out they'd avoid you.. but instead they stop like they are trying to hit you.

Golly I don't know. Everybody seems really nice and polite. They all wave and say good morning and always give me the right of way.

That's pretty good, those retards are pretty smart.   :guns:

Yesterday I'm pulling up on a pickup pulling a trailer.  He's doing like 5 mph in the right most lane of a 4 lane road.  I'm doing 50ish so I start to slow down and move over to the left lane on my side.  Just as I'm about to pass he decides to pull a u-turn, from the right side all the way to the left side of the 4 lane!!!!  :o I hit the brakes hard then advoidance manuver around as taught by MSF, just missing the trailer as he slowly completes his u'ey.  :x Grr...I guess I shouldn't feel like he was trying to kill me though, there was plenty of oncoming traffic that he pulled in front of that was heading straight for him...I didn't even look back, just gunned it and got outta there!!!  :dunno:

It seems like I get one of these stories everyday that I ride.

Many people shouldn't drive...I was riding on the way home from work and i see this car on the left side at a stop sign, they must see me, if not they are blind. so i'm going along, then they pull out hit their brakes and honk at me! They stopped before my lane so I didn't have to swerve or anything.I just kept on going....

when it happens to me i get honked at, flipped off and cursed.  Once a guy chased me and wanted me to pull over (i reckon to fight:dunno:), tried to run me off the road when i slowed down.   pulled into the grass, going real slow cause he wanted to kill me i think, and stopped.  He got out and started my way and when he was far from his car but still a distance from me a took off like a bat.  Got his license plate though and called the police.  I just didn't understand, probably pee pee envy

my favorite is when some jackass pulls out in front of me, and then flips ME off like it's my fault.

I've only had a few encounters with bad drivers, both of those were side swipes, neither of which hit me or got very far into my lane before I flew past them. I get to use my little horn whenever it happens too  :thumb: Drivers in my area semm to be generally cautious an aware, they just speed excessively and don't often do more than flash their brake lights at stop signs heh, could be worse eh.

I was chaised by a park matnence guy in a bright yellow city van. he started yelling at me because I was "speeding through 'his park'" then my buddy that I was with pulls up beside me and tells the guy to fu<k off, and takes off. this really pissed the guy off and he starts chaising my buddy. so we both take off and lose the guy and pull into a sorta hidden parking lot like maybe 10 miles from "this guys park" (and I guess him picking up garbage from this park makes it "his park") so we stop to talk about the maddness that we just witnessed and this f%$king guy comes peeling into the parking lot and stops right beside us. (how he found us, I have no idea) he starts yelling that he got our lisence plates and is going to give them to the copps and get our adresses. and we;re just like wtf, what are you gonna come to our houses and molest us in the middle of the night? (we didn;t actually say that out loud) now this guy is trying to punch us, (while we;re sitting on our running bikes, so we took off and maxed out our bikes the whole way away from this freak. never heard from the copps or this guy ever again.

Heh, if you had room to stop, you should've just stopped and laid on the horn until he got out of the way.

People tend to panic when someone is honking at them... might make him remember to look for bikes next time!

Haha, that's really funny, I can't believe he found you. I was at a friends house during the summer working on his 1977 celica because it was acting up so we'd try something and he would drive it up and down the street then back into the driveway, after about 3 times of doing this a guy comes out walking his dog and walks up to his car (behind) and writes down his plate #, then walks to my car accross the street and writes down my # and then my other friends'. Nobody ever sped or anything, the celica is kinda loud but still below legal limit. WTF is with people? Another time we were riding around on this little mini motorcycle that goes like 20 mph and his neighbor came out of his house and started yelling at us, I thought he was going to kill us.

I always tell other people when they remark that riding motocycles is dangerous that "It's not me I worry about, it's the idiots in cars that are not paying attention and pull out in front of me."

I too have had this happen to me. It is scary, but if you keep your cool and remeber the SIPD priciples you can survive.

I had some (explitive*deleted) yell at me the other day to move my bike out of the meter so he could park. As if I had no right to be there.

Oh.. even better.. is when you are heading down Santa Monica Blvd at night, and some A-Hole decides that he is going to swing a damn UTURN at about 35 across 4 lanes. Then in order to avoid you have to choose, oncoming traffic, or ramming your bike into parked cars on the other side.

Nither are fun choices to make in a split second.

he's pissed off because he expects you to "share" a spot, just like lane splitting. he expects you to space split...a-hole. you at that cafe right now?

clos-ed. :( I am at home now. Just up the street. The cafe has last order at 11:30 on weekdays, and 1:30am on friday/saturday. Sunday is 10:30pm. Opens at 3:00 on monday through friday and 2:00 on friday/saturday/sunday.

I can safely say.. if you head to cafe at any point in time that they are open. I am more then likley there. I work from there as well. I am the one that installed free internet access into the place so I could do my work there.

If you are in there sometime, just ask for jo, or tell them that jo sent you.

I was however thinking of getting some shitty coffee at cacao cause I do not feel like going to bed.

I was sitting at a red light recently waiting to turn left with this big freakin' Ford Excursion in front of me. Well for some reason this guy shifts into reverse and strats backing up into me. I'm backpedling as fast as freakin' can because he cut off my escape route all the while laying on that horn. The person who pulled in behind me was really close, and I was surrounded by moving traffic on both sides (cars going forward in the lane to the left of me, cars going the opposite direction to my right). I couldn't back up turning, I just had to go straight back. The guy behind me had pulled up pretty close to me, so I was VERY short on room. The guy behind me finally laid on his horn, and the people in the Excursion finally stopped backing up, their bumper less than a foot from my front wheel. I turned around and noticed my rear wheel was less than 6 inches away from the bumper behind me. A foot or so more and I would have been crunched.

The one big thing I remember taking back from MSF was not to ever call an accident an "accident". It's a crash and if it ever happens, it's never on accident because there's no such thing as a crash that can't be avoided by a motorcyclist.

The very title of this post pains me. ;)

This morning I was slowing to make a left turn in the left-turn lane from one parking lot street onto another. A car approaching from my right and turning left onto the street I was on decided to cut the corner and nearly ran into me. She ended up making her left turn through the right-turn lane beside me.

Notice I said "she."

I would classify getting smashed by a helicopter, or getting hit by a car in the same way.  Both accidents. If it is your accident, or the accident of another that caused the plight. Yea.. I can not get on the bike... this would keep me from getting into a crash..

I then avoided anything that might happen.

This is just my two cents though. You can take them, or leave them in the "give a penny, take a penny" tray.

I was getting on a highway exit ramp last night that normally backs up during the commute.  I was stopped behind everybody else...the traffic on the road is usually pretty good about letting people in.  It's a one lane ramp.  Nonetheless, some woman pulls up alongside me on the right and moves to cut me off.  She's in her car staring straight ahead, working hard to ignore me, so I honk my wee horn so I can politely ask her to get the f**k out of my lane (we're all still stopped).  No acknowlegement.  I pondered knocking on the window (she had eased her way left so that she was squeezing me out of the lane and was now within knocking distance), then I considered kicking a keepsake dent in the door.  I resisted, in favor of accepting fate, not wanting to make a bad situation worse, and practiced zen breathing while I conceded my space.

The worst part was that when she finally got to the end of the ramp, she turned left (the ramp only empties to the right), and cut me off as well as two other cars that were nice enough to give her some space.  Not once did she look over at me or acknowlege my presence.  Made me reconsider my decision not to thank her with a little auto body damage.  Also made me reconsider my decision to wait in line...I probably should have split to the front of all the traffic, but I was trying to be considerate and law-abiding.

That'll teach me.

Yeah, an air horn would be nice, but those are just so damn ugly! Bright red plastic trumpet shapes? Puh-lease. Plus, air horns require mounting a compressor and wiring tubes. I don't think the GS has enough room.

Yeah, but where could you mount them without ruining the lines? If you mount them along the sides of the frame they'll stick out a considerable amount. They could be easily hidden under the front fairing on the F model, but with the E it's a lot harder.

I'm sure you could find a place for them...  They're 134db...  You could put them under the seat and they'd still be loud.
