A young woman was hit and killed by a motorcycle before dawn Tuesday in Hopkins as she walked across Excelsior Boulevard from her apartment building to a bus stop, police said.

Hopkins police Capt. Jim Liddy said the motorcycle operator did not see the woman, who was wearing dark clothes and crossed Excelsior in an unlit area near Ashley Road before 7 a.m.

He said no charges are likely against the driver, a 50-year-old Minneapolis man, who was shook up but uninjured.

Authorities were trying to confirm the identity of the woman, who they think is in her late teens or older. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, Liddy said.

Excelsior is a 4-lane road there, probably 45-50mph, surrounded by large warehouses, lumberyards, etc.

You need to watch for pedestrians every bit as much as cars.  They pose an extra challenge, because they don't emerge unexpectedly from set places (side streets, driveways, and alleys); they emerge unexpectedly from anywhere. You need to let your attention be drawn to any movement from anywhere.  In the U District, people will leap right out in front of you because they're in a hurry to get to class or lunch or whatever the fick is more important than their life.

It doesn't matter if it's an unlit area.  Never outdrive your headlight.

I was hit by a pedestrian today.  The parking area for motorcycles that I use on campus is behind the sidewalk that runs next to the street; you have to use the handicapbable access ramp up from the crosswalk and idle across the sidewalk to get to little parking slab.  This of course means that you have to sit on the sidewalk and wait for an opening in traffic before you can drop down over the curb and pull out into the street.

A sorostitute yakking on her cellphone walked smack into the tail of my bike and then tried to give me an earful about idling on the sidewalk waiting on traffic when I left campus today.  I watched her walk down the street and get into her car before I left.  Lexus SUV!  I got the hell out of dodge before she pulled out of her parking spot.

I saw a drunk guy get hit by a car last night.  I laughed my ass off.

He had just left a bar I was walking out of.  Inside the bar, he had challenged a guy to a fight and had been pushed backwards into my chair and landed on my table.  He eventually left and I ended up leaving right after him.

He was walking across the street and a Lincoln Towncar was doing a three point turn in the street to get a sparking spot of the other side of the road.  The car backed into him and it didn't even knock him down.  I stood there laughing my ass off and he came over to the sidewalk and looked at me, swaying.  I continued to laugh and he turned around and ran right into a tree.  I was hysterical at this point.

Ahhhh. . .

<thread jack, over>

An honest mistake with no malice involved, but it could have been avoided. :(
