Title: How much would you pay?
Post by: adh007 on October 10, 2005, 09:10:48 AM
Newb here. I'm deciding between the GS and EX (I'll spare you the "which one is better" question, I'm sure it's been asked hundreds of times)

How much would you pay for a mid-90's GS with an aftermarket fairing and 10k+ miles?

Seems that the pricing guides are all over the board (from less than $1000 to more than $2000) -thats quite a span!

Depedns on how well it's been maintained.  Depends on how much you want it.  Depends on where you are and what the competition is.  Depends on how crappy or not the paint job and install on the fairing is.  Need more data.

Looks like it would be worth $1000 to me.  I'd say if it runs good, it is a steal.

it's worth it if you really like the fairing (with square headlight that looks like it's about to fall offf)

If only it would stay at $1000 (If it was BIN, I'd have snagged it already).  I'm wondering at what price point I should take it off my watch list.

I did mail the guy and ask about the stock pieces.  I like the fariing except for what you just pointed out, and the fact that it is square (truck headlights dont really fit on bikes to me) Personally, I prefer dual rounds a-la triumph speed triple/ four.

That is definitely a unique gs.  Any decent running and decent looking street/sporty bike is a steal at 1-grand.

Am I just  dumbass or does that GS look kinda like an EX500? (or perhaps both, haha).

I'd ay $1k for it, thats a good deal if its in good shape, I think. :thumb:

I know 1k is a steal, so does most everyone else, which is why I don't think It'll stay at that price for 6 more days on ebay.  I'm just trying to decide if I bid, what should I set my max bid at?

It's nice and all but:
new front tire, $100 +/-
new Battery, $65 +/-
new seat/ recover, up to $200

Still, It's pretty good for a 94.

I'm thinking it will go for somewhere in the $1500 range, but yall have seen alot more of these bought and sold, so what do you think?[/u]

front tire: consider replacing both with a good set

battery: $30

seat: $50

note: it always looks better in the photo

I wouldn't go over $1,500.  IMO.  But I've spent amost that much on my '89.

Don't want to scare you off it but ...

It could potentially need a lot more work than you think.

- fork bushings/seals
- brake hoses / pads
- rotton gas tank (from water and rust)
- chain
- transmission (although never heard to many probs with trannies here)

I know some people who have bought bikes on eBay and had good luck.  I don't think I would by one there myself unless it was like $500 and I didn't care what condition it was in.

I'd say pay no more than $1500 cause you could end up spending 7 to 8 hundred fixing it especially if you take it to have the repairs done at a shop.

BTW don't worry about stirring up competition here .. most of us already have a GS500.

That looks like this (http://www.gstwin.com/spec2_2.htm) fairing.  Plenty of disclaimers for the reading.

I'd get a naked one and put on a bikini fairing, myself.

The seat, tire, battery, and aftermarket paintjob (In UT Orange though...) makes it seem as if it wasn't taken care of very well. You're potentially looking at a lot of extra work being put into this thing just to make it rideable. I wouldn't go over $1200 or $1300 for this one.

I don't have one yet! *runs off to bid* muahahahahahaha!!!

Actually, I'm too broke to afford anything like that right now... *sigh* but yeah, the light falling off was the first thing I noticed... Not to mention if the seat's all torn up, might that mean weather damage? poor handling?  :dunno: Personally, I've always been kinda sketchy as far as buying things on ebay... I'd much rather go check something out in person, specially if I was gonna be spendin upwards of 1000$ (plus shipping, dunno if you're in the area) But again, this is America, the land of capitalism, so if you wanna spend your money, go right ahead!!
Pluuuuus, it seems as tho there are bikes being sold pretty much all the time... I know it's hard to not spend money when it's burning a hole in your pocket, but mebbe hold off for another month or so, and find something else nicer for cheaper? In either case, good luck! =)

Decide first which bike to buy and then look for a good one.  Take your time.

You can go broke fixing someone else's crap they have buggered up.  I have recently reworked an '89 Katana.  Now, I wanted a project bike mind you so I didn't care that it was beat up.  But this guy had used SAE fasteners in an all Metric bike, drilled the air box full of holes, cut the fender down so far that mud was flying on top of the battery, the tank was rusted right thru (stored outside in winter I bet)  ....  and it goes on and on.

yeah, this one just went over 1400 with 5 days to go, so It's off my watch list.  Seems like decent 500's (ex or gs) are hard to come by in this area.  If I wanted a cruser or a liter bike I'd be bathing in them.  Pretty frustrating.
