I want one of these
do you guys like it?
If you are wondering what it is, it is a poor man's I-Pod
I have a 3rd generation 30gig iPod in good-to-excellent shape I'm selling - comes with remote, dock, firewire cable, AC adapter, belt pouch, cloth pouch for the AC adpater, and the original box. I don't have the original headphones anymore and I'm keeping the replacements.
I have a guy who's supposedly interested in it at the moment, but if he falls through it's up for grabs.
get the nano
I have a nano...its flash memory instead of the spinning harddrive so vibration doesn't mess with it, plus...its just plain cool
i would get one but it would be against my moral (of not buying mac stuff)
The Nano is WAY too small for me. 4GB for $250? Definitely not worth it. I'll take my 40GB one over the Nano anyday. Plus, I got my 40GB one for $284 shipped :) :thumb:!
well, both serves different purposes...bigger is not always better
Who honestly has 40GB of music? i would have a hard time filling the 4 gig one.
I use mine for more than just music. I store notes and contact information on there as well. I've got 5.66 GB of music on this computer right now, and I have yet to transfer the majority of it from my old computer. On the old one I had about 16GB of music, and my new computer has much more new music. The data capability of mine is a wonderful thing as well. Very useful.
I have a pda for all the other stuff, so I jus use my nano for music. Plus the student discount/yale employee discount = $199 for the 4gb which I thought was very fair
My girlfriend just bought a Dell mp3 player, I dunno anything about it and neither does she yet. She just got it today. Not even sure of the capacity, but I know it is an iPOD competitor. Was about $200 I think. So she gave me her OLD, little one - a 128mb one. Haha. Good enough for using for walks/workouts :thumb:
my 40GB player still has about 15GB free. a 4GB player really wouldn't do much for me, though flash-memory is nice.

Me :)
I have over 75 gigs of music and only ever loaded 15 or so onto my ipod at any one time. Even then I never listened to all of what was there before reloading it. 4GB is a little small, yes, but the bonus of not having any seek times, a lack skips or jumps if the player gets rattled, etc. would make it worthwhile for me. 4GB is still over 8 hours of music depending on the bitrate of your files.
Then freakin buy one or have your parents buy you one.
I have a 256MB iLO ($60 at walmart).
By song 12 or so, im done listening.
btw, I've never been able to 'fill her up' (REALLY!)
I had a couple of Memorexs (gave one to my sister, the other was stolen when those guys broke in) and a Philips Rush. Hated the latter and was happy when I managed to accidentally run it over. I got a Rio Forge 256 and have a MMC card hanging around to expand. It's a great little player; good interface, good ergos, rembers where in the song you stopped when you turn it off or run out of batteries; has an FM tuner and is Audible compatible. $70.

thanks! My wife is looking for something just like this, and they can be had used on Amazon for $45...

I have both my 2nd-gen 20GB iPod and new 60GB iPod completely full. I lug both of them around together. Also have another 600MB of audio books on my Sony Ericsson S710a. Gonna have to get the 80GB one when it gets released in the next couple of weeks. :thumb:
I thought about getting the nano, but for the $200 it would cost to get the 2 gig one I could get the 5 gig Creative Zen Micro (which is shown at the very top). The Zen not only holds more songs, but it can play the radio and record songs off the raido as well. It is not as easy to use as the I-pod though.
Oh-well. I just have more than 500 songs to hold

Noobs, i bought a roopaq back in like 2000 (maybe earlier). it came with a 4 gig, but i ditched that and bought a 20 gig ibm travelstar drive for it, i was rocking mp3's before the ipod was even a vauge idea.
of course the roopaq used an actual cell phone battery, which gave me a total play time of like, about, 2.5 hours :(
and is was old USB 1. so moving my 14 gig of music onto it took all freaking day.
and it was about the size shape and weight of your average brick.
ok, so it sucked out loud compared to current tech, but it was sweet at the time.
I'm not sure if they make it anymore but here is a link to their site.

Eww the I-pod shuffle is dumb
iPods are overpriced... There are better players out there for less.
Went to bestbuy last sunday to buy a nano (somewhat impulsively as I was flying to boston that evening, else I would have bought it online.) Got there, picked it up, felt it, looked at it, put it down and bought a mini... Let me tell you why...
1. Heard some bad things about the first run of nanos (scratches and screens)
2. The thing is SMALL. I mean, small to the point that I didn't feel comfortable holding it in my hand.
3. Nano only comes in 2gig and 4gig, Mini comes in 4 and 6 gig. I bought the 6 gig
4. Most importantly... Apple has stopped making minis. It was my last chance to get one.
I love the thing to no end... I flew in excess of 14 hours this past week on a total of three flights.... man this made time go by so much more smoothly!
I agree that Macintosh is overpriced. I don't like using I-tunes to organize music, i use filenames not the mp3 tags. You can get a really good player with equivalent storage for much less. That is me though, i hardly every buy small electronics in the store, overstock.com is a great site to pic up some good factory refurbished goodies for cheap. I have head a couple complaints about them but i have none.
Nate, I'm the same way. I went on download.com and downloaded a little id3 tag editor... You can mass populate thousands of MP3 tags at once based on what the file name is. Its good stuff! :-D

Schweet! Still i am a cheap bastard, refer to ramen thread, so i probably wouldn't go with anything Macintosh.

ditto. I've had my 20GB Dell DJ for 2+ years now. Longer battery life, more capacity, cheaper, and easy uploading music to the device. But.. it isn't as 'cute' or trendy as the iPods... whatever floats your boat. Mine floats on value...
trey

I said, "HEY GILL!" (you have to yell, he's hard of herring)
When I was shopping for MP3 players I looked at things from Creative (the Zen) as well as the Dell, iPod, and a few others. I decided on the iPod because it had good battery life (8+ hours on mine, easy), it was TINY compared to other MP3 players of comparable storage (I got the 40GB one and the smallest one at the time next to it was more than twice the volume) and I could get it for relatively cheap. I paid $282 for mine, shipped. For a 40GB, that's pretty good. iTunes is also pretty good about sorting music, too. I organize my music by artist in alphabetical folders, then keep my artists with full albums seperated into folders within those alphabetical ones, then seperate the albums within the artist folder. iTunes keeps the song order too (when you tell it to).
I'm an idiot. That's a given, but top that off with me being an impulse buyer and you have a recipe for disaster. I just bought a new 60GB iPod in August. Right after they announced the new iPod with video (http://www.apple.com/ipod/ipod.html) capabilities today, I just put in my order for a black 60GB. I'm a consumer whore.

Do the folks a Circut City, Best Buy, and your cellular store know you by name? Do they have your credit card number memorized? Do they swarm you when you walk through the door? Are they drooling (just a little bit)? If not, you're not as bad as some people I know.

hehe I fit quite a lot of that. I know I have a problem. The next step is dealing with it. This will be the 5th iPod I've had since the original (not to mention the numerous other mp3 players I've gone through). Oh how I love those little boxes. Ohh, here's a little something I worked on last night. Inventoried about 1/3 of my DVD collection and made a quick site out of it all with the help of Delicious Library.
Check it out. I'm gonna do the rest of them this weekend if I can find the time. Not really sure what it has to do with the topic. Maybe something to do with the consumer whore part.
I've resisted the iPod thus far, but the video is just...well let's just say if I don't get one from Santa Claus, I'm switching to Channukah Harry.

This might sound like an insult, but it's really not....
I have known several Yaleys in my day, and not a single one came close to "normal" in my book ;)
When it stops raining, I'll get it back out and have my roomie record some video or take pictures...its really amusing cause they can't figure what to do. They kinda hop outta the way like pigeons

Raining? What's this strange and mystical raining you speak of? ;)

Laugh all you want LA-boy. :P Usually this is a pretty dry time for us--it helps the leaves go all colorful and attracts tourists--but we seem to be caught in precipitation purgatory.
Not to be glib though, it's actually been a very serious problem up here since last weekend...like state-of-emergency, bridges, roads, and houses washing away, storm drains overflowing, sea walls failing, severe flood warning, people dying kind of problem. Parts of New Hampshire hit with over 11 inches of rain over the weekend had a number of fatalities associated with the resulting flooding. It seems to be tapering off, but I've heard that there is an outside possibility that a tropical air mass could dump as much as 7 inches of rain up here on Friday. With rivers already at/over flood stage, that would be Bad News.
