I've got the oppourtunity to do corner work at a track up in Dallas on October 24. Problem is that it's a Monday, and I've got classes. The way this works out is that I work a corner for 8 hours (stand around, call people/work flags if someone goes down) in order to get a track day credit with RideSmart. Work a corner for 8 hours, get a free instructional track day. Is it worth skipping my classes to go work the corner?
http://www.ridesmart.info is their website.
Are you seriously asking? Go for it.
I'd say so, its just one day of classes and you must know atleast 1 person willing to share notes form each of your classes eh?
Time to be a mom....
Aren't there any other days you can do this to earn a track day? Skipping school sets a bad precedent. :nono:
Now, having a son of my own, I know you're going to do what you want to do. :dunno:
So good luck with your decision, and I hope it's an adult one! ;) :thumb:
Pandy: Yes, this is the only available date for me to do corner working before the next track day, otherwise I would have definitely would have waited for a Saturday corner working. I'm not a big fan of skipping classes ever, but that's why I'm asking for y'all's thoughts on this.
Narcissus, I do indeed have friends in each class to share notes with, but I like being able to absorb the lecture audibly as well. It's kinda like a double reinforcement thing.
I'm fairly certain I'm going to do this because I don't have $100+ to shell out for a regular track day.
Yeah, go work the corner  . I'd cut class just this once for it. Why? Because sometimes, you can learn a lot more outside of class than in one. Some of the most valuable lessons in your life will be learned outside of the classroom. It is time you learn that ;)
If you have a good friend in the class, you can have him/her tape record it for you if possible. :dunno:
are you insured when you do corner work? and do you get paid or is it always for free?
Skip school and just study harder that week to make up for it.
track, track, TRACK!!!!!!
Quote from: JetSwingare you insured when you do corner work? and do you get paid or is it always for free?
Not sure about being insured by the track, but I don't technically get "paid" either. I'm paid with a credit for a free instructional track day. They take you into a classroom setting and teach you the basics, then have you go out on the track followed by an instructor (one on one; he follows you and critiques and offers advice when you get back in).
I'm not quite sure how the class is run (I'm assuming it's a lecture?) cause what I would do, is have your friend take notes and record the lecture with a tape recorder or somethin. Or if the prof allows it, video tape him/her! Just say you're gonna have surgery, or that you're sick, or whatever. I'm sure they'll be understanding =P then get your trackday! good luck!
Should have scheduled your classes for Mondays and Fridays off so you can have your cake and eat it too!
Do it. Unless you have a test in the class and even then if it's worth less than 5% screw it. :thumb:
WARNING!
trackdays are addicting
after your trackday you will reconsider your priorities in life
i used to be a gym rat, working out all the time & competing in powerlifting. all that has gone to the wayside. i have not been to the gym since i bought the gs for the track this past spring.
i've almost used up my vacation time to trackdays, even considering going out west in the winter to ride the tracks out there...
Are you serious? Who is really that worried about skipping class?
The ONLY reason you should ever worry about it is if they keep track of attendence and only give you a certain number of missed classes, and then you only worry about it if you've nearly missed the maximum.
Nobody's perfect man. Just act go see them the next day and tell them you had the green apple quick steps.

..even then...
I had to repeat a painful number of credit hours due to flagrant disregard for the cut policy. And never was it caused by anything as worthwhile as free track time. I did get pretty good at grovelling and begging to be reinstated, though.
Out of curiosity...which classes would you miss? (that is, if you took the absence...not that we're encouraging that...but hypothetically...)

So good luck with you decision... ;) :thumb:
Clearly she skipped a few days of English; I'd listen to her.
Dave
Classes I'd be missing:
CC303: Intro to Classical Mythology
CH301: Principles of Chemistry
M408D: Sequences and Series Multivariable Calculus
ME302: Engineering Graphics and Design Lecture
The only ones I'm really worried about are the Chemistry and Engineering. The Chemistry mainly because he covers a lot in class every day and the engineering because we have a project due. I figure I can get my friend to get notes for me for Chem since she's there anyways and have my group members turn in the project.
ginoe: I've heard they are addicting, but I'll be getting all mine for free for the next 4 years as long as I do corner working to get the credits. I think I'm set! :)
JamesG: I'm a freshman, I can't get Mondays and Fridays off!
As a college instructor let me say take the track day
CC303: Intro to Classical Mythology- Dumb
CH301: Principles of Chemistry- Boring
M408D: Sequences and Series Multivariable Calculus- Lame
ME302: Engineering Graphics and Design Lecture- May have hot chicks in it
I think you're fine. If you're smart enough to be in the 300s and 400s as a freshman, you're smart enough to make up missing one day's worth of class.
You can do it!
Dave

It was typing I missed. :nana:
So, Alpha, come back in three months after you've done the track day, and let us know what your final grades are. I expect an A in every class! :P ;)

Myth: Lots of reading (dumb)
Chem: Boring
Calc: My professor reminds me of the guy in callmelenny's avatar. He tells us lots of stories about how he makes his own beer, enjoys fine cigars, deals with his heroin addicted son, and hates illegal mexican immigrants with no insurance who drive drunk and total his brand new car.
Engineering: Dude. It's mechanical engineering. It's a sausage party. :(
And for clarification, I'm skipping to go WORK a track day. I might have to skip again to go DO a track day.
I was being facetious; I can assume there are no women in there. My point though remains: Get your ass to the track, because you aren't missing shiat! I missed days to play GTA 3 when it came out and to deal with the reprecussions of being "overserved" the night before; this is a MUCH better reason to not go to class.
Just go for it.

We had a widespread outbreak of "Masterchiefitis" when Halo 2 came out.
I skipped an art history lecture this morning knowing I have an exam in there next Tuesday, and I only did it to get an extra 2 hours' sleep. Getting a free track day is a much better reason.
I used to tell all my professors (undergrad) that in the springtime, I would never be in class if the outside temperature was over 70 degrees. They made it clear that my 70 Degree policy would ensure me to never get an A in their class. I made it clear that I was fine with that.
My advice: just go in thier office (bring the one guy a cigar) and staight up tell them "I'm missing class because I am passionate about riding motorcycles, but I will do anything I can to make it up to you."
Edit: Ohh. Ohh. No. Tell them that you are a volunteer EMT and that you have to work the race that day to make sure nobody gets hurt and if you don't work the track day you'll lose your EMT certification and a scholorship that you earned by being a volunteer firefighter in highschool.
That's much better.

You gotta weigh your choices... Missing class can wreck you for the rest of the quarter.
If you have your heart set on working the track day, then you might consider talking to your teachers... Tell them that you have some VERY important PERSONAL business to take care of and you will most regretably be forced to miss a day of class... Tell them that you REALLY don't want to screw up your classes and see what material will be covered, etc.
Some profs will be hella cool about it and arrange for you do attend a different class or even have a little personal time... Some will tell you tough luck... and some will tell you that missing class is never an option and that they now hate you.
:dunno:
School is good. You have a lifetime to ride track days...
Quote from: RVertigosome will tell you [...] they now hate you.
Wow.. I wana see a teacher that goes, "I hate you."
heh. It seems like you said something or another about not making it before the next track day. So does that mean you could just wait a week, and do it all out of school?
In high school, I had an english teacher that wrote "Uhm... No" on a friends essay...
Quote from: NightRyderQuote from: RVertigosome will tell you [...] they now hate you.

Been there.
I had enrolled in "Computer Graphics". I assumed it was a computer course; what I failed to notice was that it was an
art course. Draw lines and circles using the "paintbrush" equivalent of the time...then sit back and appreciate your own genius. Blech. I wrote a basic ray tracer and submitted source code and a rendered scene (textured spheres on reflective plane). Mostly becuase I was a bastard.
The professor failed me because he couldn't get my final project to print on the plotter (raster graphics, vector device), couldn't get it to open in his drawing program (wrong image format...remember: bastard), and obviously couldn't make heads or tails of the code. I got the math department to contest my grade...he lost. He hated me, and didn't have a problem telling me so.
Good thing I didn't have to take any more art classes.
Quote from: scratchTime to be a father that rides a motorcycle...Dooo the trackdaaayyy!!
 Evil scratch comes out to play.
Really...only YOU can know whether you're in a position to skip school once or twice. If you're a bright student, and you're keeping up with your classes, then there's probably no harm.
BUT, if you're struggling at ALL, listen to the mama here, NOT the daddy!!! :P ;)
Quote from: NightRyderWow.. I wana see a teacher that goes, "I hate you."
I've had a prof say it in not so many words...
He said that missing class showed my disrespect for the class and him as my professor... Yadda Yadda Yadda... I'm a bad person... Yadda... Wasting my time and his... Yadda Yadda...
Moral of the story... Profs that grade on attendance should teach high school. (I passed with a B- after acing every test, missing a quarter of the lectures, and turning in my final paper a day late ('cause I didn't bother to write it until the day it was due)).
Quote from: BadgerWe had a widespread outbreak of "Masterchiefitis" when Halo 2 came out.
I had a case of that about a month before it was realeased. Thanks to those frenchies that leaked a copy of it a month early
i attend class to afford a LOT of future trackdays

If that isnt in the spirit of Artistry, I dont know what is. F'ing brilliant. Anyone who fails an art class is a-ok in my book.
oh yeah, go to the track Alpha. life's too short to be stuck in a classroom. think about it. in the grand scheme of things, what effect will one class actually have? Will it significantly affect your college 4yr gpa? will it affect your ability to get employment? bleh.
Quote from: pantabloIf that isnt in the spirit of Artistry, I dont know what is. F'ing brilliant.
<threadjack>
In retrospect, probably not so brilliant. It would have been a much better idea to drop the art class and do the work anyway as an independent study (under the math department)...would have counted toward my major, perhaps could have turned into a plausible thesis project, also wouldn't have required me to spend all those class hours looking at lines and patterned blocks deemed "art" by the professor. *shrug*
The good news was that it got me access to the art deparment's computer lab...they had the only machine on campus at the time capable of displaying more than 16 colors. I'd write code on my machine (usually while drinking, which didn't help), walk the code to the Math dept's lab to compile, debug, and run (overnight), then walk the output to the art complex to see how I did. Rinse, repeat. Tedious.
