This might be a odd question, I bought a motorcycle that Im looking to sell or trade in. I have the title and I sign it and everything but I haven't went and l plated the motorcycle, Can I trade my motorcycle in a dealershipe without the motorcycle being plated?
As far as I know you only need a license plate if your going to be riding it on the street.
I don't see why not. The dealer doesn't sell them plated :P
actually it sounds like the situation i was in. Do you have the title from the previous owner signed over to you? Or do you have a title in your name to sign over to someone else? If its signed over to you, I would apply for just a title in your name and then hand it over, otherwise idk if the stealership will take it.

As of right now, you don't have a title...you have a transfer of title. You probably need to have the motorcycle titled to you before you can sell/trade it. You don't need to have it registered. In many places (i.e., MA) this is when you pay the sales tax on the purchase, so the state doesn't want you skipping this step. The dealer probably can't accept it unless the title is in your name.
This is also important for private sales...-always- make sure the person you're buying from is the one that is named on the title, otherwise the title may not transfer correctly or there may end up being a tax lien on it.
most dealers and even the DMV have a form that can be filled out that allow you to Back out of claiming the bike/vehicle and allowing another to claim it.
still, its better for all involved if you get the titled transfered to your name before you use it to trade in.
For me, as a rule, I have the seller sign and print thier names where needed and i leave the date and price blank UNTIL im ready to register it for use. there have been times where the vehicle had to sit for 6month for parts/time to repair and the DVM wants to charge Late fee's for not transfering in a "Timely Matter" . should i fix and then wish to sell it, then the title is still open for the next buyer so they can register it imediately. most my stuff needs work when i get it and often gotten at a low rate.

Otherwise you end up like me :x with a GS sitting in your garage waiting to be ridden, but you don't get to register it until October (my registration is going on right now back in NY) and my GS didn't

I don't think that MA allows that, so I guess it depends on where you are. :dunno: Here, they need you to pay the sales tax when you transfer the title. They want the tax every time the vehicle changes ownership, regardless of whether or not you ever registered or used the thing. I'd assume that if you "backed out" of claiming the title, the title would defer back to the original owner, no? If so, you wouldn't be able to transfer it to someone else.
YMMV, I guess.
mountindewGS: Dunno where you are, but if you are going to complete the title transfer, you might not want to wait until the last minute. I know mine took a few weeks to come in the mail, and you don't want to run into problems, fees, or extra taxes/penalties when you do need to deal with the title. i.e., if your state has an excise/personal property tax on motorcycles, they might send out a bill to the title holder which could result in a lein on the title.

In most states you are only required to register it if you intend to drive it on the road (which also may require insuring it to some statutory limit). You shouldn't have to get a plate for it. Title and registration are two seperate things. The title is essentially a certificate of ownership...that part you want.
If you don't mind saying...what state are you in? Everywhere can be slightly different, and someone else in your state might be able to provide the most accurate info.
