Ok so I have insurance through Progressive, my bike's title was messed up so I had to wait until now to register it. When i went and printed my insurance cards, it said that registration had to be obtained within 45 days of the effective date, which was 9/15. Clearly, I'm passed this, is this going to be a problem? Or will dmv jus be like whatever cause Ihave the insurance cards and my policy is still valid
hmmm...i doubt it would be a problem. though dmv policies would vary from state to state.
when i went to register my bike here in virginia, they asked if i had insurance (which i didn't). i told yes. they didn't require any proof. so i went and got the insurance afterwards.
as long as you have the valid insurance, i wouldn't think it would matter :dunno:

Call your insurance agent and ask?

In MA they require an original, hand-signed insurance stamp on the RMV-1 form. No stamp, no registration, no exceptions. Of course, you could cancel your insurance as soon as you get the form stamped...but that's another matter.
There was a guy registering a vehicle ahead of me who had one form with the seller's signature and another with the insrance stamp, both filled out with the same information. This didn't work for them...they were very particular. As usual, YMMV.

Then: wait on hold for about an hour to have them say, "If the card isn't valid we won't accept it." Then have to call your insurance agent anyway to have them issue a new card. I'd cut out the middleman...even more so because it's the DMV.

well, you know what the insureance company is going to tell you. the policy is already stated on the insurance card. i'm saying call dmv cause maybe they will give you slack :dunno:
dmv has the final word not the insurance company
but think about it, what if you do register after the 45-day period. are they going to make you get another insurance when you already have one? doesn't make sense to me...
Ok , so I contacted Progressive and tehy were like we don't care if its for a bike, its mainly for cars. They don't want you using the temporary cards for more than 45 days after the effective date but its still a valid proof. I'm sending my little brother to the dmv now :)
I use progressive. Watch out for 'surprises' that will come along in terms of potential rate increases that you aren't warned about up front.
I requested and bought minimum (no uninsured motorist coverage), and was required to sign and return a form to them to avoid them adding to this to my policy even though i'd never given them permission to add this.
It might have been because of the laws in GA... i can't say for sure... what I can tell you is that I get more mail from progressive than from the bank. They love to kill the trees over there. Make sure you open everything they send you or they will try to charge you some cash.
P.S. The MSF discount for me would have amounted to less than $10...
one speeding ticket (car) on my driving record raised my insurance from $80 to $100.
:x :x :x :x :x :x :guns: DMV
So...apparently even though I asked Progressive, I should have listened to you guys and called DMV, so now I'm on the phone cancelling my old policy and buying a new one plus $60 in cancellation fees and what not. :x Freakishly expensive now but still a whole helluva lot cheaper than geico....
and i WILL be riding this weekend lol
cheer up ;)
lack of insurance never stopped me from riding ;)
Is *anything* easy at the DMV?

Same... But, we don't need it here. :nana:

It's never hard, but always takes a whole hour longer then it should. Time? Yes. Hard? nooo... If you think the "look into this thing, read the second line, please" or "that will be $10" or "go get a different ticket" or anything is hard, then o_O?. Seriously, hard, no. Pain in the ass, Yes.
oh, and it's called the DOL here.
The important question should be: registering it in NY or CT?
Dunno, I would have just used the temp cards, and called Progressive saying you 'lost' them. Hey, it's a bike, there's no glove compartment!
I'm glad I got my bike and car done through the agent my family has had for 20 years... lost something? solved. Want to tweak the rates to get something cheaper? solved. Accident? solved. Take good care of us. :) My little brothers still use the same guy even though their cars are registered upstate...
i want to :guns: :guns: dmv myslf also
when i sold my old gs, i cancelled the insurance but kept the plate. well, dmv suspended my license and wanted $800 for reinstatement fee :x
i had real hard time convincing them i shouldn't need to pay that amount.
Doh, that's a bad thing to do! Can only keep the plates if they send you a replacement!
NYS DMV has gotten so much better since the old days. Their silly 'take a number' system with like 5 different categories actually works. And, I sneak off to the branch office and only have a 5-10 minute wait ;)

In MA the RMV now puts the expected wait times at each branch up on the web for each category. Very cool if you need to sneak off and take care of something. :thumb: It's based on how many outstanding "take a number" numbers there are.

here is va too...the wait time for each branch is posted on the dmv website.
I'm registering in NY....stupid NY. CT is supposedly so much easier but I dont have a permanent address here other than a PO box or a CT license so they won't let me register here.
ahh the NY DMV.. waiting in line for 45 mins no matter what time of day you go. only to get to the front and find out theres 1 more form you need, then get sent to the back again. ha. and they charge you for everything. like $1 to surrender you plates.. and if you dont surrender them you get fined.
When i moved to PA and change my license from NY to PA... i went to the "license place" they dont have a DMV, and got my license printed and handed to me all within 30 mins. plus my car insurance wend down $200 every 6 months.
I love NY.
ewww u have it so easy in Ct/NY ther other 47 states...
here in MD no proof of inssurance=no tags not even temporary tags....Anyou you can't get Insurance till you get proof of owner ship...So ya let me put this on a time line 4u:
week 1 -apply for re-assigned title
week2-DMV does their thing w/ the title
week3-finaly get title back and buy insurance
week4-early part of week-get "offical" paper work for proof of ins...
week5-wait like 2hours at DMV for tags
NeVER EVER EVER EVER go to the DMV on the first monday of the new month :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: I have learned my lesson very well a 3hour wait..... :guns: :guns: :guns: :guns:
*must stop with the emoticons* lol  o-my-gosh
