Title: i'm desperate...PLEASE HELP...Carbs...
Post by: Frost on October 15, 2005, 05:23:55 PM
sigh...another IDLE problem...i've searched and searched...I read that ppl who have the same problem as me fixed it by richening up the mixture...but it doesn't work for me...and now i'm desperate...

so here's my problem...

IT WON'T IDLE!!!!!!!!!!!

when starting the bike cold...I have to give it full choke and a little throttle...and it will idle fine as long as i have my hand on the throttle...

after it warms up (~5-10min)...and closing choke and throttle...it will idle fine at 1300rpm...but once i give it throttle...it hangs at 3000rpm...

i know that everyone will say that i'm running too lean...I tried to richen the mixture up by turning it out 1/2 turn at a time (staring from 2 turns out)...

but i tried turning it till 5 turns out and it still hangs...(this is with the idle screw all the way out)

one more thing...if i let the bike hang at 3000rpm...it won't come back down...and when i "blip" the choke...it will bring back the rpm and kill itself...if i give open the choke slowly...it will bring the rpm up...

i've cleaned the carbs...did valve adjustments...and tested for leaks...but still won't solve the problem...

anyone know what the hell is wrong with my bike?

ps...i have mods according to my sig...

My idle hang stopped once I plugged one of the holes in the bottom of the slides.

ok lets eliminate possible outside problems other than the carbs.

1. what's the condition of the fuel lines? replace them if their so-so
2. got good gas in there?
3. spark plugs gaped correctly, and some what new?
4. When was the last time you had the inteak valves measured?
5. o-rings at the top of the carbs there? [under the blk. plastic cap]
6. Throttle cable is adjusted correctly? Dosn't hang up if you move the bars?
7. choke cable return spring...make sure it's not stretched and installed correctly. check the outside linkages while your at it.
8. air filter? good/bad?

Ok after all of that you got to pull the carbs.
1. just replace the pilot jets and main jets...there to small to tell if something is in them or not....there not that expensive anyays..
2. clean all of the float assemblies. Check the o-ring seal..
3. double and tripple check the needle seats [IMHO this is where the problem is]

upon re-instillation clamp the clamps extra tight. Make no misteak that there could be an air leak around the clamps.

7. choke cable return spring...make sure it's not stretched and installed correctly. check the outside linkages while your at it.it works
8. air filter? good/bad?K&N pods...with ~8000km...clean

1. just replace the pilot jets and main jets...there to small to tell if something is in them or not....there not that expensive anyays..same size?
2. clean all of the float assemblies. Check the o-ring seal..I did already
3. double and tripple check the needle seats [IMHO this is where the problem is]what are needle seats?

what year is it again?

I ran 150 mains on my welico lunchbox set up...but that was a 91' only pilot jets and main jets...01+ has the mid jets....I would replace the mid jets and pilot jets....inject the mains w/ carb cleaner from the can using the little straw. Make sure the screw driver didn't chip them any...holdit up to a bright light...

the needle seat is on the float assembly....a little metal needle abot 1/4" long with a black tip that sort of hangs on the metal clip on the float. It sits in a little chamber on the carb body. I'll try and pull up a diagrm of the carb assemblies and circle if for you...maybe kerry will beat me to it...

There are 3 holes in the bottom of the slides. The center is for the needle. One of the outer holes in each slide is what was plugged. I used a nylon screw (10-24 I believe). It was about 2" long but I cut it to size (about 1/4" long) and cut a slot in the top for a flat blade screw driver. It basically looks like a set screw. I tapped the slide, no drilling required. The screw can be removed if needed. You could use epoxy or something similar but I would rather have something less permanent.

This is not anything new. DJ supplies 2 plugs with their kits, one has a hole and one is solid. Theirs are allen head. I never had a complete kit of theirs, only a partial kit that I came across.

I'd adjust the valves ... again ... just to be sure, then see if choke or somehitng is hanging ...
Cool.

i'll try the plug method...but i'm not really sure how to do it...

the problem happened before the valves were done...I did it mainly because of the idle problem...

When you put the nylon screw in, do you put the head of the screw under the slide, or down inside the slide?  It would be easier to put underneath, but I wonder if there is clearance for the head when the slide is down all the way.

I think Srinath said that he trims the head off completely with a razor, which would solve the clearance issue, but then you would need to reverse-drill to get it out later.

Since the slide is plastic, I wonder if running a 10-24 self-tapping screw through first would do it (rather than buying a whole tap set).

Sounds like maybe the throttle is being held open. Maybe the butterfly flap on the carbs are stiff or the throttle cable is damaged and sticking inside its tubes.

I can't see that the slide holes would have anything to do with an idle problem.

Could it be the float level being too low causing it to be too lean?

You can check the float level by attaching a hose to the drain nipple on the carb bowl and open the drain valve.  Hold the hose so it make a U shape.  I believe the fuel level should be at about the same level as the top of the float bowl.

Also , I assume you played with the idle speed adjuster?

When I did this, all I did was plug one hole and the idle hang went away. Nothing else was changed or adjusted. Everyone else's opinion does not mean crap to me. I know what worked for me. All the other common suggestions did not do anything to help me.

I am a very displeased that my PM was displayed to the public. If I wanted it to be viewed by everyone I would have posted it in this thread.
