Title: Motorcycle insurance. testing waters for bigger bikes.
Post by: Church6360 on October 16, 2005, 07:17:33 AM
so i was thinking the other day, "hmmmm i would like a bigger bike, but i love my insurance payments, how much worse could they be?"

so i went to the progressive web site and checked.
(most, if not all, of these are with full coverage. the prices are for a full year)

2002 Hayabusa, $3246
1984 GS1150E (i love this bike), $909
2002 TL1000R, $3246
2003 SV650, $2034
2003 SV1000, $1974
2003 SV1000s, $2088
2003 Bandit 1200, $1368
2003 Bandit 1200S, $2088
1972 GS750E, $499

i only checked the busa and TL out of curiosity (was pretty sure they would be more than i wanted to pay) but i was really suprised at how cheap the naked bandit was. still not nearly as cheap as liability only on my GS500 but it's not bad.

and no it's not a typo, for me it really is cheaper to get the SV1000 than the SV650  :dunno:

another oddity, i tried to check on buells (i know i know, light your flame throwers if you haven't already.) but the progressive menu didn't make alot of sense, like maybe buell calls it somthing different than progressive does.

2003 lightning XB9, $3441
2003 lightning X1, $2030

maybe i picked the wrong thing or the site is wrong, but a 900cc buell quoting higher than a hayabusa?

anyway, just a (nearly) useless posting about insurance.
and i think i'll keep an eye out for a bandit 1200.

Omg look at the price for the SV1000S... I'm paying $355 CDN now for minimum coverage on my GS with the MSF course and I was 16 at the time, although being 17 now I don't think will make a difference.

That's incredible!  I thought our insurance rates were pretty much standard.  I was paying nearly $700 with fairly minimal coverage also, but at 33, no tickets, married, and cars/house all covered by the same company, I don't know how it's possible I'm paying more than you.  Who are you with?

I'm with Primmum. Are you talking about the insurance you had on your GS, or what you have now on your CBR?

That's what I paid for my GS.  I'm paying the same for the CBR, since they slotted me in the lowest risk bracket and the CBR was a few years older than the GS.  Your insurance rate is incredible.. don't ever change your company.  I don't even think we have them here in Toronto, and State Farm is probably the cheapest (my current company).

yup the SV 1000 is cheaper insurance wise because there are only like 10k of them on the road...SV650/SV650S there's like 70k...=more claims=more of a risk to insure=you pay the difference. That was the deciding factor for me between which SV version to get...I was like ya give me the big-boy heheh

Yea, the quote was 2400, when I got the bill for 1700 I was enthused.

Not just that, but the demographics of the buyers are different.  Younger kids are more likely to get an SV650 than 1000, due to the price difference, and are more likely to crash.  1000 buyers tend to be older guys with biking experience under their belts.

I got you suckas all beat.

With Progressive, and minimum legal coverage in GA I'm right around $100 a year. :nana:

Since I went back to school my dad has been paying it, but last time I paid for it (3 years ago) it was $116 (it has gone down since then as well.)  I'm not possitive, but I think my insurance was actually under $100 for this year.

IN NO WAY am I telling you what to do but...

Personaly on my own account I have found that state mim. coverage of 20/40/15 just isn't enough for a motorcycle. I would hate to survive an accident with mimimum coverage....

Just fuel for thought that's all

I have my bike an 91' FZR600 through progressive w/ full coverage for just $487 a year. that's not bad considering what a young driver pays for a car...YIKES...don't even get me started on that......I drive a POS driven into the ground antique and it's still 3x the cost of my motorcycle. However I think that if someone would "total" it I'd make money for the given book value  but it runs like a champ just looks like crap...I can't wait till I turn 25ish and get out of this "teenage" driving rate curve.....I can only hope that girls start paying the same premium guys do, regardless of a spotless record I'm still paying in to it :(  :(

As long as the guys, as a group, keep crashing more, they'll keep paying more.  Demographics are king.

Yeah...  When it comes to things based on a statistical average, like driving records, there is no equality.

Young men crash more because they're psychotic adrenaline junkies that think they're indestructible and above the law.

Women crash 'cause they're naturally bad drivers.    :nana:  :nana:  :nana:  :nana:  :nana:  :nana:

Mostly evil power.  I've worked with a lot of actuaries...they love to tell you when you're going to die.

It's true that men cause more accidents than women, despite our claim to be better drivers.  But I've read that if you don't count accidents where drugs or alchohol are a factor, women cause far more accidents than men.  So men really are better drivers.  We're just also drunks and junkies.  :)

The problem there is that if you take the drunks and junkies out of the stats, you have two guys remaining in the US.  They don't cause accidents, but they don't get out much either.
