Title: Wobbly GS?
Post by: dbarile on October 16, 2005, 09:24:11 PM
I was riding the GS Friday and it seemed like the bike was a little wobbly. Kinda like it was moving ever so slightly side to side.

Now it was windy, so I can't swear it was't the wind, but even when the wind wasn't blowing the wiggling continued.

When I got home, I stood at the front of the bike held the front tire with my knees and tried to shake the handlebars.  Now the tire and and forks didn't move, but the plate that held the bars seems to move in relation to the triple clamp plate.

Is this normal?  I never tried this before so I can't say this is new. I haven't checked the axle or the wheel yet and I will do that this week if the wobbling continues.

before you do that, check the obvious stuff like tire pressure. Check to make sure the weights that balance your tires didn't fall off etc...

Does your steering head bearing have some play in it?
Also check the fork brace on the top of your front fender. Sometimes it looks fine but when the screws are off, the holes are sometimes streched out. This   often happens if the bike as been crashed or layed down.

Keep us posted.

I may have had a similar experience yesterday.  It was extremely windy (gusts over 50mph).  It didn't so much feel "wobbly" as it felt like the rear was drifting slightly side to side.  I double-checked tire pressure, and that was okay, and I checked the rear wheel rotation on the centerstand, just to be sure.  Another note is that this was most noticable when I just started, so it could have been a result of the tires being cold as well.  A little bit disconcerting, but it seemed to work itself out.

It seems like the problem would be loose steering stem bearing orloose wheel bearings, or loose swingarm bearings.

But sometimes I get a wobbly feel, and I wonder if it could be related to having a radial tire and a bias ply on the same bike? Does anybody know if such a combo is inherently bad?
