Title: Christmas List
Post by: Mr.7 on October 17, 2005, 07:24:43 PM
I can't decide if I should ask for an iPod (you know I want one) or a new pipe for the Blue Beast. Both are about the same price and I want both.
How much did your pipes cost?

what is on you list
you know whose going to check it twice

Ho ho ho in ohio

at least do some research before you invest in something  :x

the item i posted is superior in almost every way, if the hard drive isnt big enough put a 80 in it, its doable, sports 14-35 hours of battery life and wont eat your wallet alive and force you to use poorly written software such as itunes

All I want is a cheap welder. I'm actually hoping I get one for my birthday though - before Christmas! Aside from that I don't need anything, would rather get stuff for the family.

I want a couple GS upgrades (short stalk turn signals, 15t sprocket, suspension upgrades, typical crap). A good pair of riding gloves wouldn't hurt, either.

I'd also like a better digital camera, as the one I have is a big peice of crap.  :x

Reminds me of the "letter to the fat man" thread  ;)

'04, I've run Mac since '96, likely to stay that way when I get my next comp in the next few years, prolly going to be a laptop, and I like iTunes.  Never crashes, EQ works just fine and the interface on it  is better than any ported Windoze freeware I've seen.

Call me an old dog, and I'll check that out give it a fair chance, but I'm not really wanting to learn any new tricks, you know?

Except the interface, and styling, price (currently $10 more than the 30GB ipod).  Interface alone is a huge factor in buying a iPod.  The iPod is simply one of the easiest to use consumer devices out there.  Looks to me like the jetaudio unit has a little thumbstick.  I hate those things.  And with pretty much everything beinh equal, or a narrow margin for one device or the other*, the iPod's gonna win every time, just based on the fact that it's a iPod.  I can't see any real advantages of either of the players you posted (except ogg, which I don't think is a big deal for most non-geeks).  I love my iPod.  Have you considered the idea that the iPod is popular because it's the best player out there?

* 35 hours battery life is a fairly decisive victory, but I've never had problems with my iPod's battery life, wich is somewhere around 12 hours of playback.

I don't know about best, but good reviews + good for general public/ease of use + fancy looking + large marketing = solid sales = more word of mouth = even better sales.

For me, 10-12 hour battery = not going to buy.

Years ago, a good friend of mine did his Ph.D. dissertation on "why products win" (essentially)...his research and analysis illustrated that it's almost -never- because it's the "best" product.

Well...  Your pipe is only useful on your bike...  An MP3 player is useful everywhere...  On the bike (DANGER!   :nono: ), on the Bus, walking to the bus, in class, in church, at dinner with your parents or in-laws, at work...  etc.

But... Don't get an iPod...

Get something just as good or better for less money.

Or get a Samsung PMC...  Plays MP3, etc... View Pics...  Plays VIDEO!!!  Built in speakers...  Small as hell...  Weighs 8oz...  Kick ass!!!

Aaron, wtf...I didn't write either of those you quoted me on.

I want an iPod.  Sure, batt life sucks, does it matter to me?  No.

There's more than a couple reasons I run a 5 yr old iMac instead of a brand new PC.

Why pay less for more when you can have an iPod?

See my Rio Forge review elsewhere...

Someone can put a GS500F in my stocking.

$180
2500 songs

I didn't mean for this to be an iPod vs. world contest
That is why I created this post:

I want a dig camera.  I need to get a good pair of really warm riding gloves cause it is getting dang cold at night here (hopefully before Christmas).

I am going to keep the GS stock, and save for my next bike that I will build a wish list a mile long for :)

Get something that can be used as a portable HDD...  Preferably one that has built in drivers with Windows and/or WiMP 10.

Then when you go to your friend's house and he has cool stuff, you can just upload it rather than dealing with drivers. :thumb:

Another reason iPods suck.

Well I picked up mine and the user interface is rather simple,

the plus part is I am not forced to use a software interface to transfer music onto the device like apple does with itunes/ipods...just drag and drop music onto the device as if it were a hard drive.

Well to wrap it up, I hardly think any product on the market is superior simply because it sells more units to consumers. More people my age drive civics than any other car...does that make it a good car? I couldnt say yes or no.

I am all about bang for buck and less restrictions on the way you use your hardware. I have owned past mp3 players that also forced you to transfer music via their software and frankly that is very annoying and slow going.

Keep it simple, lots of features including video playback, almost the same price as the ipod give or take $5-10 off either device depending on how good of a shopper you are, (in my opinion) a simple user interface which is very easy to learn. Drag and drop music transfer and the 35 hour battery life do it the most for me.

Just because you don't see it on TV every other commercial with someone's shadow/reflection dancing to the music its puting out does it make it an unworthy product in comparison.

by no means is the ipod a bad portable mp3 player, I just think there are better products out there other than the "popular" ones.
