Title: Best option for paint touch-ups?
Post by: Tyrant171 on October 18, 2005, 09:08:54 AM
Since I've had my GS, I've had to deal with the impact of the wonderful idea that the previous owner before me had made to spray paint part of the side panels and rear grab bar in a botched quasi-Spider-Man motif........and frankly it gives me the willies everytime I look at it. The p.o. had made a pattern with the paint that really isn't that bad, but it's just the color and quality of the spray paint that he used that's horrid. I'm looking to just paint over all of the custom-painted parts and grab bar with a nice-looking uniform white color.

Should I look into spray paint for the job or elsewhere? Basically.....what's the best kind of paint to use and are there any other things I should know about doing paint touch-ups?

Thanks!

sand sand sand. if there are ANY scratches or other surface imperfections that you can feel when you are sanding sand some more.  I like to start off with a 100 grit, followed by a 220 and then a 400  all dry, then wipe everythign down really good with rubbing achacol, put on two thin coats or so of your base colour, and wet sand with a 800 grit, you'll probably want to repeat this so you have a total of 4-6 coats of base. make sure you follow the directions on the can for the cure time, cause trying to sand half cured paint sucks and you will have just wasted a week. and get to start over.

a few things to remember:

* the more you wetsand the thinner the following coats have to be, or they will lift off and it looks all spiderwebbed.
* there is nothing you can't fix if you let it dry and resand.
*duplicolor enamel is the only rattle can paint you should ever put on a bike.
* when you think your done sanding, wipe it down with achacol, and run your fingers over the piece, you'll find more scratches that need to come out.

a quick rattle can job.

www.colorrite.com . While they may be a bit expensive, they'll be able to give you a ton of advice on what to do when in order to get the paint looking as good as possible.

I repaired a ding on my tank following their instructions, and I can barely tell it's there anymore.

Alright.....thanks a lot for the info, man. :)

But, um.....what do you mean by wet sand? What kind of technique is that? Also....I'm guessing the ### grits are types of sand paper?
