Title: Chicken strips
Post by: Chris_B on October 18, 2005, 08:37:47 PM
Hello there my fellow GS'ers,
I got my bike on the road this past week, boy what a blast. Im 16, rode dirtbikes since I was 8 or so. This summer I got around on a CB350 and finally getting on the GS felt GREAT! It's smoother, faster, the brakes actually work, it's a new bike. But anyways...
Im curious how much untouched rubber you have at the edges of your tires. Ive only put about 250km on the bike, just getting used to it, taking it easy. Ive got about 1/2 - 3/4 inch thick chicken strip. How about you?

I wear mine all the way ot the edge on the back and have about  0.25 inch on the front.  most people won't go to the edge on a front tire.  As a new rider I would pay more attention to proper technique.  If you are doing the right things you will get faster and your chicken "strips" (honey mustard optional) will get smaller[/img]

If I had roads that had curves I might go further, but I've got between 1/4 and 1/2 of an inch of 'chicken strip' on both front and rear.  If you are familiar with the topography of southeast GA you'll understand.

I'm not totally coherant (sp) cause I've been drinking.

when I had the gs I had them worn edge to edge. when I ran a 150 profile tire I couldnt get to the last 1/4" due to the pinching of the tire shape on the too-narrow rim.

on the 600rr I have little melted balls of rubber hanging off the front and back...

To the edge on the front, and I just can't seem to get that last 1/2" on the rear.

Dunlop K491 130/90r17 with about 4000 miles. it's hard as a rock and is like riding on iceskates.

I have experience with old shitty tires, not fun!
I live in Barrie, Ontario, there are a total of ZERO twistie roads around here, that I can find. Anybody know any good spots in the area?

Down to the edge on the rear...almost to the edge on the front. The Pilot Sports on the bike now ball up quite a bit after a spirited ride or a track day.

Yesterday I made a trip to caesar's head (in the mountains of upstate sc) for my first twisty run.  the tires were pretty much new when i got the bike (01 gs500 w/ 15k) 215 miles ago.

I had a look at the tires last night.  i have like 3/4 to 1 inch unscrubbed (don't remember exactly) on the rear with all the rubber "nibs" still intact 1/8 inch from the edge.  i have lots of learning/riding to do.  I still scared  myself and i was obviously not that close to the edge of the bike's abilities.  i need to remember: LOOK WHERE YOU WANT TO GO, AND PUSH AND LEAN HARDER!!! it is so easy to freak out when you stumble into a decreasing radius turn.

I really thought i was dragging the center or sidestand around at least 2 of the lefthand corners.  i swore i heard scraping.  was I imagining it, or does it get that much in the way?

I scrape one stand or the other on a consistent basis, especially when riding with a passenger.  I weigh about 170 lbs and it happens when I'm riding only moderately aggressively.

I just posted a new thread asking how to find a Katana shock to alleviate that situation a bit. :)

I have less than a 1/4, probably about an 1/8 inch on my rear tire.  Same in the front.  I don't ride agressive but i do enjoy my twisties.  I scrape the centerstand regularly in long, mildly fast sweeping turns.

I just did a quick little 20 mile ride on my new Sport Demons. I got them down to a little less than a half inch front and rear. Hopefully I'll be changing that tomorrow on the 200+ mile ride I'm going on.

1/2" rear and 5/8" front.

mostly farm land around here.  The only twisties are on-ramps.

check this out  "Great Ontario Bikeroads".  maybe there's something there.

Also check out www.gtamotorcycle.com.  I know you are not in the GTA but I suspect they go North for some of the rides.

Looking at the rear tyre i have about 5mm on the right hand side and about 15-20mm on the left hand side. It sucks because we have no twisty roads here and the only corners long enough to lean ( dramaticaly ) on are intersections with roundabouts on them, and these only turn right.
Any corner that does have a decent radius is spoiled by the typically crap (potholed, cracked ) condition of the N.S.W roads. Well N.S.W Roads west of the mountains that is.

Actually mine are like that too.  We drive on the right here so my chicken strips are smaller on the left.  So when turning left, there is a larger radius and you have time to set up for a nice lean.  Not that I'm draggin knees thru intersections but it gives you more practise on that side.  Then when you find a nice curve, you are more comfortable on the left.

I just went on a 240 mile ride on my new Sport Demons to do a proper scrub-in on them.

I killed my chicken strips. I'm happy. :)
