Title: HOKIES
Post by: natedawg120 on October 20, 2005, 07:20:37 PM
I must vent.  3 interceptions :x :x :x , missed field goal and a fumble :x against the Terps, WTF!  I need beer, but am at work.  Currently 14-3 VT.  The terps are playing a good game, but my blood pressure can't handle this.  It remainds me too much of the near win last season at NC.

Oh sweet! Football talk. I've been waiting for a little bit of this from you guys. And you know where there's football talk, there's some fun loving sh** talking going on. Alright...

Way to go on the win. Too bad beating the crap out of unranked teams wont do anything for your standings. There are so many votes separating VT from Texas. Even if you guys go undefeated, the current votes are just too great for VT to overcome. And the votes separating Texas from USC are even greater. :thumb: Great time to be Trojan alumni! :nana: Fight on! (http://ajsportsbar.com/pac10/USC__Fight_On.mp3)

To get that close to SC, yeah, the Irish are a damn good team. Much better than their rank or record show. That was one of the best college games I've ever seen.

Yeah I rooted for ND against USC even tho I hate ND, it was a great game but they are aways over hyped in the media.  I think the Tx and TTech game will be a good one to watch, lots of high scoring should happen.  I hope Tech gets the upset.

The best two games this week are in the sec.  Bama and Tenn, and LSU Auburn.  Roll Tide baby!!! :thumb:

This is exactly why VT defected to the ACC.  We finally have teams worth beating.  And don't underestimate Maryland.  They may be sketchy at a few positions, but they are not pushovers (Just ask #23 Virginia).

Up next for the Hokies: three ranked opponents...

#13 Boston College
#6 Miami
#23 Virginia

BC and Virginia should be blowouts as both of those teams are over-rated IMO.  Miami is one of those teams that usually brings it agains the Hokies, but they are bringing it to Blacksburg, so they should lose this one, too.  All Tech really has going against them is their history of November slumps over the past few years.

Unfortuantely (or fortunately) the side effect of being ranked in the top 5 is that the pollsters have a history of refusing to shift the top 5 unless somebody loses... so Tech can no longer advance based on their own performance alone... they will need some help from Texas Tech, UCLA or Cal.

Vick definitely looked off his passing game.  I think the Maryland defense was playing quite well against the pass and they were tough to read.  They just got tired in the second half.. Tech won it on depth.  It's not the prettiest way to win, but this is exactly how USC keeps winning.

they defected cause acc is better conference. i don't think any school want a thougher schedule. and all school has handful of gimme games on their schedule. becasue all schools have easy games on their schedule, the strength of schedule is almost a push. what really matter is how you do against the stronger opponents.

if you're a major program and go undefeated, you'll play for the national championship no matter how weak your schedule is.

I disagree.  Ask Auburn what they think about going undefeated... or the Tulane team from a few years ago.  Or hell, even USC who had to share a title with LSU.  The "strength of schedule" component of the BCS is alive and well and functioning in the rankings.  Not to mention that pollsters will always consider the caliber of a team's opponents... most dont follow all 119 teams that closely, but they see "Big East" "MAC" and "WAC" and immediately discredit the performance of team regardless of their talent.  You can't deny that conference affiliation is a part of the giant, F-ed up system the NCAA is using right now.

you're not actually serious about tulane, are you? they might have deserved a chance but...

auburn's case really doesn't count cause they were under a sanction.

it's true. now on then, there might be an undefeated team that might get left out but it doesn't happen often enough to give a serious thought to a playoff system.

either way, bcs gotta go

agreed.

The BCS would be a fine way to select 8 or 10 teams for a three-to-four round playoff system, but for picking the best 2 teams, it stinks.  Like you said, teams finishing 9th or 11th have little reason to gripe about being shut out of a title shot... frequently the teams finishing 3 and 4 have a legit case to make.

man I missed that cause I had Friday off.  I don't know if BC or VA will be blowouts, esp if the Hokies go in head strong like they did against Maryland and play like crap.  Miami is going to bring it and that is going to be a tough game, it almost always is.  BC next Thursday is going to be a good game.  I can't wait.

BC could be a good game.  But NOBODY comes into Lane stadium and gets out alive this season.

dream sequence starting...

diddly do.... diddly do.... diddly do.....

I was actually in the front row, south endzone (student section back then) for the first-ever ESPN Thursday night game (VT vs BC), which was a disappointing loss to BC 13-7... ah memories.

dream sequence ending....

diddly do ... diddly do.... diddly do....

anywho...  UVA just suffered an embarrassing loss to UNC... good... ha!  The Hokie Nation can only hope that UVA takes a serious skid, gets beat up by GaTech and loses all hope by the time VaTech comes into Scott Stadium.  Honestly, regardless of how UVA performs in the next month, I think Tech has their number this year.

the way i see it, Tech had better win this saturday or the Gator Bowl committee just might chose to take Miami instead of Tech, leaving VT in the Peach bowl against an under-gunned SEC opponent.

My real connundrum here is that I want to see JoePA catch Bowden in wins, but I want to see Tech win, too.  If FSU wins the ACC, JoePA gets to trounce bowden personally, but that would mean a Tech loss.  If Tech wins the ACC, its either a win for my Hokies OR one more for JoePA.  I would really be torn between my love of Tech and my loathing of Bobby Bowden.

From the link in my signature:

QuoteWhat is a Hokie? A look at Tech traditions

Here is the answer to that oft-posed question, "What's a Hokie?" and an explanation of other Tech traditions.

What is a Hokie? The origin of the word "Hokie" has nothing to do with a turkey. It was coined by O. M. Stull (class of 1896), who used it in a spirit yell he wrote for a competition.

Here's how that competition came to be held. Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 as a land-grant institution and was named Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1896, the Virginia General Assembly officially changed the college's name to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, a name so long that citizens shortened it in popular usage to VPI. The original college cheer, which made reference to the original name of the institution, was no longer suitable. Thus, a contest was held to select a new spirit yell, and Stull won the $5 top prize for his cheer, now known as Old Hokie:

   Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy.
   Techs, Techs, V.P.I.
   Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah.
   Polytechs - Vir-gin-ia.
   Rae, Ri, V.P.I.

Later, the phrase "Team! Team! Team!" was added at the end, and an "e" was added to "Hoki."

Stull later said that he made up the word as an attention-grabber. Though he may not have known it, "Hokie" (in its various forms) has been around at least since 1842. According to Johann Norstedt, now a retired Virginia Tech English professor, "[Hokie was] a word that people used to express feeling, approval, excitement, surprise. Hokie, then, is a word like 'hooray,' or 'yeah,' or 'rah.'" Whatever its original meaning, the word in the popular cheer did, as Stull wanted, grab attention and has been a part of Virginia Tech tradition ever since.

The castrated turkey thing is bullcrap... probably a rumor started by one of those freakin' Wahoos at THE OTHER University  :nana:

yah,

at least they didn't lose the Gator Bowl slot to the Freakin' Hurricanes.  There is a long history of Tech getting snubbed for Florida teams in those bowls.

Overall, we would have been better off without the ACC championship game.  Even if Miami had never lost to GT and Tech was left out, then they would have a 10-1 record and most likely be in the same bowl game... oh well... coulda--- shoulda---- woulda.  :(

Louisville is probably about the level of team Tech should be matched against.  It is clear now that Marcus Vick and his O-line still don't believe that they can beat a Florida team.

Thought I would revive this thread to say a few things...

First:  TAKE THAT LOUISVILLE!

Second: Did the Hokies D pummel that poor Q-back or what?!

and Finally: Marcus Vick should have been EJECTED for stomping on Dumerville in the second quarter.  what a jackass.  I thought the Hokies had more class than that.

was glad to find this at Hokiesports.com ...

QuoteThe following is a statement from Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Jim Weaver:

"The unsportsmanlike conduct of quarterback Marcus Vick in yesterday's Gator Bowl game against Louisville is unacceptable behavior and contrary to the Hokies Respect Campaign.

Such on-field action is not reflective of Virginia Tech football nor of the values we hold at Virginia Tech. I and my colleagues in central administration are embarrassed and this athletic administration will not condone such acts of unsportsmanlike conduct. We will review and assess this incident further and deal with it accordingly."

he's a discipline case.

I have seen plenty of games at Tech LIVE.  Particularly in those against Miami I have seen the visiting team kick and punch at the bottom of piles after the cameras have pointed away.  I have always prided myself on Tech being the kind of team that dealt with that kind of crap and kept playing with dignity... not anymore.

I think they SHOULD chuck that dope smoking, wreckless driving, 15 year old date-raping, kickin' a man when he's down, unappreciative, spoiled A-hole off the team.  he has given MORE than enough reason to boot him off.

lighten up my arse

you remember aguy by the name of randy moss? he's one of the top wide receivers in the nfl aka problem child.

well, he was kick out of florida state back in the days. it didn't matter. he ended up in marshall. then went on to the nfl. and the morale of the story is...if you're talented, you'll second chances over and over...and over.

i think coach beamer make a bigger mistake by not saying right thing during the post game press conference. he basically said that "marcus said he didn't do it on purpose...blah blah". now, he know that we know that it was intentional. even if end up not disciplining him, he should have said he would review the tape and decide to discipline him or not. what a way to show an example, frank!

I hope the whole TO fiasco proves this wrong, I hope that idiot never plays again.  I think coaches and players and fans are getting tired of these players that act like these do.

And man VTech got lucky to rally for that win, I thought they were beat.  Bama pulled off a squeaker too... I can't wait till tonights game

If the first 3 BCS games are any indication, tonights game is totally gonna live up to the hype.  Alright, OSU beatin' down ND wasn't that exciting to watch, but the Sugar and Orange Bowls were awesome.

Go Horns!

I'll make this as polite as possible, but unfortunately for those poor Texas fans, I do not think the game will be as enjoyable as they are anticipating.

Aww, screw it... FIGHT ON!
