Title: GS500E -- no go at 80mph?
Post by: weeeeeble on October 23, 2005, 03:22:38 PM
I bought a gs500e earlier this year, after having ridden a zzr600 for a year+.  I feel like my gs doesn't have anything left for acceleration when it reaches 80mph.  I wonder if I'm just freeway spoiled from riding the 600, or if there's something wrong with my bike.

Sooo ... is it me?  Or is it my bike?   :dunno:

It could be either.

Your previous ride will spoil you.  But my 500E and F would go happily over 80 - happily over 100 indicated, for that matter - in 6th.

If you hit a brick wall at 80, something could be off with your bike.  Is it a brick wall at that speed, or a flat spot at that RPM in any gear?

Pretty much in any gear.  Downshifting doesn't help much.   As for hitting 100 ... maybe downhill with a tailwind.

Sounds like it's probably my bike. :(

Running too lean can give you a flat spot at 5-6Kish.  Did it have any mods?

Yeah sounds like it might be your bike. My 04 F still has pep in 6th gear at over 100mph indicated. I've had it to 115mph indicated (flat) in 6th and had to slow down because I got spooked, but it had some more oomph left in it to go. It was me that didn't   .

Give that sucker a tune up.

It just got a tuneup!

Maybe it needs a tuneup elsewhere.   :x

And give a little detail about the 'tuneup' it just had.  You or someone else?  What was done?

yes, gs laggs past 80mph especially on uphills or into strong wind.

ahem. that's only 80mph in real life speed.

I don't think the speedo gets worse than 10% off typically, and 110 indicated (which I've seen with no issues) is still almost 100 actual at that error.

It's got a V&H pipe and a Stage 1 jet kit.

I bought the bike, it ran like crap, so I took it to a shop for a major tuneup.  They had a hell of a time with it until they found that one of the valves had burned, but they supposedly fixed that.

It doesn't run like crap anymore, just loses oomph on the freeway.

First thing that comes to mind is checking the exhaust for leaks.  Just move your hand near any joins and near where the headers meet the engine, and feel for air while the bike is running.  Just don't touch the pipe.

Stock airbox?  I think a Stage 1 might be too lean for pod + pipe.

Yeah, stock airbox.  I'll check for exhaust leaks.  Thanks for your help.
