Title: safety strap on tank bags
Post by: porsche4786 on October 23, 2005, 09:19:21 PM
How many of you use the safety strap for your magnetic tank bag? And how many of you don't? I noticed that mine was rubbing through the paint on the tank.

Ya i use mine. Although I've tested my tank bag (Chase Harper Medium Compact magnetic) fully expanded at typical cruising speeds (80+ here in Michigan) with zero problems, i use it. Peace of mind, baby.  8)

Do you notice yours leaving a mark in your paint? Mine rubbed through the clear coat and some of the paint in one spot.

Nope. Mine has a soft fleece-like pad that goes between the strap and the tank. Nice feature, but it sure looks funny when i ride without the tank bag attached. The strap sticks straight up at speed.

Get some clear contact paper - put it under where the strap hits. Generally found in the housewares department.  If you cnnot find that, then some of the self-stick document protector stuff from the office supply store.  Peals off fairly easily without leaving behind too much residue and protects the paint. Replace as needed.

just in case the magnets fail while going 200 mph, you attach a safety strap to the handle bar or something.

I've used maybe half a dozen magnetic tank bags - different sizes, different bikes, I wore a couple out. Anyway, I always used the safety strap at the start, but now I never do. Too much like work unhooking it all the time. In fact, if they're attached when I buy the bag, I cut 'em off.

I've had a magnetic tank bag come loose exactly once. It was a very large tank bag, heavily loaded, it wasn't in proper contact with the tank (odd shaped tank and I wasn't paying enough attention), I was going  about 60 mph, and I hit a huge bump in the road. The tank bag slid back into my lap, and I replaced it more carefully. Other than that, I've never had one move an inch.

I've never used the strap for my Held bag, in 2+ years of daily commuting.  I have a small windscreen, so that could help.  I've carried two gallons of milk in it many times; sacks of potatoes, etc.  It has moved maybe an inch a few times.  I believe that it could fly free, if there were a big change in speed (like a crash).   Maybe a panic stop would cause it to move forward a few inches, but it's never come loose during practice panic stops (maybe I should put 2 gallons of milk in for practice).

Not to say that there's anything wrong with caution, and you should be safer with the strap on.

My Nelson-Rigg Fibertech  (http://www.nelsonrigg.com/fibertech.htm)Tank Bag comes with just 6 magnets (two down the middle & two each on the wings):

Nice soft underbelly. No strap and no scratches.  Takes considerable force to pry it off the steel tank.  Not worried about loosing it to hurricane-force winds, though it's protected by instruments & flyscreen.

I was also concerned about hold-down strap chafing, so I avoided the problem.

they do...its the middle strap under the handle...you click it out..loop it in the handle bar in the triple..then click it back....the magnets hold pretty well ...but i click it on anyways
