Title: Who's got ghost stories?
Post by: kidcoma on October 25, 2005, 10:33:38 AM
6 days till Halloween! Who's got some scary stories? Here's mine:

I used to share a house with 4 other roomates. One night one of my roomates and our friend came home late after a long night of partying. Our friend didn't want to drive home so he crashed in one of our other roomates beds who wasn't home at the time. He was sleeping on his side when he felt something push him on his back and he couldn't breath or move and all he could hear was a bunch of children screaming. Then it stopped and he heard some whispering coming from the closet and he could see the figure of a man. He got up to turn on the light and when he did it was gone. He left right after that and told us what happened the next morning. Maybe he just had a little too much jungle juice that night but supposedly his whole family has the 6th sense. He and his brother have a bunch of gnarly stories from when they were growing up.

One of the first times my little brother and I were allowed to stay home by ourselves we were scared to death. We were watching some Creature Feature on a  UHF station. During the movie, a soccer ball rolled down the hallway from our room and into the den and stopped right in the middle of the room.

I think I was 10 and my brother was 8 at the time :o  :o

When my parents got home we had every light in the house on and we were hiding in the basement

I and most of my family were staying overnight at my sister's house for the holidays.  I got up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, but found it to be occupied.  I was still mostly asleep, so I just leaned up against the door frame and waited... and waited... and started to doze...

My sister emerged from the bathroom very quietly... so quietly that I did not hear her in my half-asleep state.  Not expecting anyone to be lurking in the dark hallway, she turned and ran right into me.  She leaped back and started screaming hysterically which scared the crap out of me (luckily, not literally) so I yelled loudly and lurched across the hall and banged into the wall which made her scream even more.

By the time we were done banging around and screaming, the whole house was awake and scrambling; trying either to escape from the house or arming themselves with baseball bats and fireplace pokers to kill whatever what appearently messily devouring several of it's occupants.

Every light in the house was flipped on which only served to blind everyone and increase the chaos.

Fortunately, noone was bludeoned to death by a well-meaning sibling, I did not soil myself, and my sister did not suffer any permanent physical damage.  Mentally... well, the jury is still out on that...

(yes... not a ghost story, but pretty d*mn scary for a minute or two...)

OK so narrowing it down is a little difficult but here is the latest.
I grew up in rural Delaware, my parents house is very old, like DeBeers catalog old, my grandfather said he once saw 1809 chiseled onto one of the undersides of one of the marble windowsills.  There are many stories of people dying in the house including recently my grandfather, father and aunt.  Many instances include several credible witnesses and unexplainable results.
The event is from about 5 years ago.  My cousins, myself and my wife were watching a hockey game and a few people left the room to get some more food from the kitchen.  Just as my cousin walked back into the room the three of us (myself, cousin and wife) all heard something happening above us.  As we looked up we watched the ceiling expand into the room and then shrink as if the house were breathing.  We flew out of the room got the rest of the family and checked it out.  It's a drop ceiling with a flat roof above it, with no room for anyone to be in between the two and we had never seen anything like it before, living in the house for a combined thirty years, it couldn't be just drops in air pressure or any critters walking in the space because of the size of it- it pulled in about half the ceiling just in that room.

Plenty of other stories if you want them.

In college we (meaning my friends and I) lived in an old, old house, with a historical designation.  One night, in the summer, we finished grilling on the front porch and were drinking beer and listening to the Royals get their asses kicked by somebody.

My buddy Chris announced his need to pee, and went in the front door.  The closest restroom was in the basement.  It was down a flight of stairs, and the doorway was directly ahead.  It is dark down there, and the only light source (until the bathroom light was turned on) was from the very top of the stairway.  He said he got to the bathroom door and peeked his head around the corner to find the light switch.   There were three mirors on the wall in the direction he looked.  When he peeked in, a shadow moved quickly across and in front of all three mirors.  Not so much a shadow, but a person there in the dark.

We heard him scream and his screams grew louder until he emerged from the house, ran across the porch, down the stairs and into the street, panting and doubled over.  We joined him there and finally got him to tell us what happened.

Now I, being at the time half drunk, decided to investigate.  One friend waited at the top of the stairs and Chris followed me down to the bottom.
At the bottom, we waited, me near the door, Chris just behind me on the first step.

I told him, "Shhhh.  Shhhh."  I heard something.  "Shhh," I said again.  I leaned in closer.  I realized that Chris was mumbling, "No, no, no, no."

"Shhh", one last time.  I heard it!  I won't soon forget it.  There was the distinct sound there, coming from the bathroom.  Boots, shuffling across the time floor.  Chris heard it too, and now started yelling "No!"

I wheeled around, grabbed his belt and tossed him out of the way.  I ran up the stairs, 4 at a time, where my friend Dan waited with his beer.  My shoulder hit his chest and sent him flat on his back as I ran into the street.

Very scary stuff.  There were two other instances, but none that I can directly relate.

A few years back when my grandparents lived in a 2 story house in Fresno, off of Cedar and Tulare (general area) where highway 168 now runs (their house got torn down to make the highway) we had some interesting experiences. The house was from the late 1800's and my grandparents had raised my entire family in it (four kids, my dad, uncle and two aunts, ranging through 11 years age difference).

Upstairs was my uncle johns old room, and our play room. We swore up and down that my uncles old room was haunted. I distinctly remember playing in the play room and seeing the door open with a child standing in it, or hearing it slam closed many times while playing. The thing that sticks out most in my mind is having a ball roll (not bounce, but roll) into the room. We sat and debated like children as to who had to go get it, and while we were debating (the door at the bottom of the stairs was shut so no one came up) the ball came flying into the room, and bounced off the opposite wall...we hauled ass downstairs and into the back yard to be with thor (big german shephard) and stayed there for a few hours.

It was long after midnight when something  :dunno:  woke me up in the bedroom I shared with two older brothers.  I wasn't scared...I was just 5 yrs old...I had no reason to be scared of anything yet.  But from that night on....

It sounded like it was coming from the kitchen.  What was it...it was a repeating chorus of laughter...hee-hee-ha-ha-ho-ho.    Each time, it grew louder...sounded closer...as if moving from the kitchen into the living room...hee-hee-ha-ha-ho-ho...Hee-hee-ha-ha-ho-ho...Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho.      I listened in fascination as the laughter seemed to reach the hallway leading to the bedrooms.  Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho.     And when it was finally loud enough to be right outside the door...Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho...across the room my oldest brother coughed...and the noise went away.

For a minute or two...

Then faint laughter started again...from way back in the area of kitchen.   It had to be chorus of three or more voices.    Hee-hee-ha-ha-ho-ho.   Getting  closer, closer, and louder, louder ...hee-hee-ha-ha-ho-ho...Hee-hee-ha-ha-ho-ho...Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho.     This time I had goose bumps and chills. :o     Everybody else was asleep, it was just me alone lying in bed awake that was hearing what was going on.   Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho.     Again, it got loud, coming from the other side of the bedroom door.   My eyes were like pie plates  :o  as I braced for whatever was going to happen next.   Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho.    Just then my brother next to me rolled over, the bed squeaked, the laughing stopped, the chain was broken.

He must've heard it!  Both of them.  They're as terrified as I am!   Wait, no...they ARE asleep.  Gall!

I tried not to listen as the still of the night returned........... and the faint voices in the kitchen began again.  Hee-hee-ha-ha-ho-ho.    I was curious the first time, there's a first time for everything, but now I sensed evil for the first time in my life. :(    Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho.    All the lights were out in the house, just the glow of street light coming through the window.   How did it get inside the house?    The front door?   No, the kitchen leads to the porch, the porch to the back door, the back door to the backyard, the backyard to the cold, garage with the window which turned black when the sun went down and looked spooky.    Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho...Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho...Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho.    I cleared my throat.  No good.  I emitted a fake cough.  The chorus of laughter kept coming.  It was getting louder, my eyes were closed by this time, the blanket going over my head. :o  Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho.    Then a book hit the floor in the bedroom next door--just in time!  :P    The chain was broken.  Nothing could hurt me when my parents were awake.  Surely, they heard and any minute would be opening their door to check out the living room and make it go away for good.   But no one stirred and I heard laughing in the kitchen.  :(   ...hee-hee-ha-ha-ho-ho...Hee-hee-ha-ha-ho-ho...Hee-Hee-Ha-Ha-Ho-Ho.

Good grief, in case anybody read down this far...

I can't remember how this all ended.  The laughing came to the door again and stopped after awhile?  Perhaps.  The sun came out?  I finally fell asleep?  I told my mother what I heard the next day.  She looked concerned...she'd never seen me so spooked...but nobody else reported hearing anything that night.  I should have crawled out of bed and pulled open that door and confronted whatever was making the noise while my brothers were safely within yelling distance.  Then I would've known...instead of becoming afraid of the dark...instead of hating being alone...instead of dreading the night the creeping demonic laughtrack would return.

I half expected the creeping demonic laughtrack to return a few years ago when I was living alone in a two-story seven bedroom house.  I slept in the far reaches of the basement because I decided if a portal to hell opened up one night (or if my imagination got fired-up :P ) I'd rather be there to see whatever and get it over with rather than be cowering upstairs listening for footsteps marching up the staircase.  Besides, if things got too ugly I could always crawl out the window well.

I've got another one from college.  Same house as above.  It was a frat house, hundred years old, and there are several things that happened in three years I lived there.

My sophmore year, my roommate (who was very close to dropping out of school) took a job at a local casino (Harrah's) as a valet and was working nights.  He would get home at like 3 or 4 and his girlfriend would spend that night and wait for him to get home. This is one room, mind you, so many nights it was just me and her in there sleeping, me on a bunk bed raised 6 feet off the floor, and her on the futon below and across the room.

Outside the door to my room was a half flight of stairs leading up and a landing.  On the landing was a fire door.  Big, heavy, and made of steel.  Then another half flight of stairs beyond that up to the third floor.  The stairs were creeky and made a lot of noise when anyone walked on them (and actually collapsed more than once - ahem, naked stair diving).  Anyway, that fire door was a Buddha Loves You to get open.  It was tricky as hell and took everyone several attempts at the door handle, which you pushed down with your thumb and pulled.

One night when it was just me and Kristen in there sleeping, she came over to my bed and shook me.  She whispered, "Listen, Jake.  Do you hear the door?"  I listened.  After a few seconds, the fire door started opening and closing.  Bam.  Pause.  Bam.  Pause.  Bam.  We looked at each other with a WTF look.  Bam.  Bam.  Bam.  This went on for a few minutes.  We listened after it stopped.  Whoever was doing that had NO problem with that damn door handle.  And nobody ever went up the creeky stairs, or down the creeky stairs.  I bet we listened for an hour to hear any sign of anyone that could have been responsible.  Then my roommate got home (on his old POS Virago) and we turned the light on and stayed up all night.

That was odd, that.

My parents house is fairly active (read above).  I was in the kitchen one night studyng for a biology test in the morning.  Out of he corner of my eye I could swear I saw my dog walk past the kitchen door and into the hallway that dead ends at the bathroom, this is not a small dog 130# german shepard/st. bernard mix.  I was going to go yell at her to stop drinking out of the toilet, and there was nothing in the bathroom.  I thought it was wierd but nothing scary.  When I started back to the kitchen I saw someone walking into the kitchen, just the back leg or a shadow clearing the door frame.  I checked and nobody was there.  I grabbed my books and hauled as to my bedroom.

The shadow men stories are all to frequent at my parents house.  With multiple witnesses at the same event.  I gotta go to class I'll hit you guys up with that one tomorrow or later tonight.

Back in high school, my friends and I were on our way back to my buddies house after a late night mexican food run. He lived on a stretch of road that wasn't really developed yet so there weren't any houses, stores or any reason to be out there unless you were driving through. So we're driving along and we see this guy just sitting on the side of the road and we're like WTF is this guy doing at like 2AM. We turn around thinking we were going to scare this guy or something but when we got back to the spot where he was sitting he wasn't there. No other cars were following us that he could have jumped into and both sides of the street were sheer canyon drop offs so he didn't have anywhere to go. Supposedly a lot of kids died on that road racing and stuff. Needless to say, I ended up staying at my friend's house that night. I didn't want to look in my rearview and find him sitting in my back seat.

I took a road trip this April up to see a friend in Maryland.   She is living in her grandfather's house (he just died last year, aged 100).   I arrived after midnight, so we pretty much chatted for an hour or so and went to bed.  She assigned me to the front bedroom, and my travel partner to the back bedroom.   Well, around 2:30 in the morning, I kinda woke up and had the feeling of being watched.   Although I didn't "see" someone there, I had the distinct "impression" that a tall old man was standing at the foot of the bed, checking me out.   I just sort of waved to him and said, "I'm Jeff, a friend of Karla."   The I got the impression he just "went away" after that, and I fell right back to sleep.   When I told Karla about it the next morning, she said that was her Grandpa's room!     :o  Ack!     Not a scary story in itself, but there is a Part 2:

A couple of weeks later, Karla was sitting at her dining room table telling her sister about my encounter with Grandpa.   Well, the light over the table went out (on its own) while she was telling the story.   They thought that was weird, as the switch was still on, and the light had not burned out...it just came back on about a minute later.    The day after that, her sister said she was bothered by the light incident and was going to take a close look at the light.   As she approached the light, it went out for a few seconds and came back on!

We decided "Grandpa" is still just hanging around the house, looking after his family.   :thumb:

Our house is around a 100 years old and I bought it off of my sister and her husband.  They had some experiances in the house and so have my wife, me, and some other family members.

We have seen shadows where there shouldn't have been, heard voices, kitchen cabinets open by themselves, our cat would fuzz up and walk around the room growling and hissing at nothing????

While laying in bed one night I heard some one call my name, I got up and went into the living room to see what my wife wanted and she was asleep on the couch. ????  I woke her up and she came to bed with me, later that night we both got woke up by a voice/sound.  We both got up and she got the pistol and I got my sword and walked around the house.  This also happened to be the first time the cat went crazy hissing and growling at nothing.  During the fall/winter is when the things start to happen.  So far nothing this year or we just got used to the stuff and no longer notice them?

Other people had heard voices and thought someone had said there name while they had stayed at the house.
