Title: new tires
Post by: Octous on October 26, 2005, 11:16:41 PM
Does anyone have any recs for tires to replace the stock Bridgestones that came with my 2000 GS500?  The front one is starting to go bald and I was wondering what the gurus of the forum ride with on their bikes and the reasons why they chose the tires that they did.

Anyone want to weigh in?

Thanks!

not to harp, but a search would have been the quickest answer to this...

that's not a bad thread... the general consensus here seems to be pirelli sport demons... but some like the Avons, or even the BT-45s.... so do a search for each of those terms, read up, see what sounds good to you... mebbe someone else will drop in with another bit of wisdom for ya... Whatever you decide, get good tires, and soon!

Title: My tire choices...
Post by: Trwhouse on October 27, 2005, 01:04:29 PM
Hi there,
I tried Dunlop Elites on my GS500E several years ago and was VERY unhappy because they didn't have 70 Series tires and I had to use 80 or 90 Series aspect ratios. Terrible handling, and the bike FELL into corners. Unnerving.
Then last spring I mounted a set of proper 70 Series Michelin Macadam 50/50E tires and they are GREAT!

My bike handles great again, traction is excellent wet or dry, braking is phenomenal and my bike is much improved.  I used stock sizes and am VERY pleased.
Good luck,

Todd

Most people will tell you that the Bridgestone Excederas that comes as stock are crap. They are right. I went for Bridgestone BT45s like a lot of people here and I am very happy with them. Speed demons come very highly recomended and GS Jack (I think) has posted a fair bit about various types.

Just out of curiosity here, what would be the pros/cons of putting a 150 series tire on the back of my '05 GS500f? Would it even fit?

There are several dozen existing posts on 150s...  I'll sum it up.

A 150 will fit, but the only good things you'll get out of it will be a wider looking tire and a few more tire choices.

Handling will not increase because of it; More likely it will decrease...

Although unlikely, you may have to mod a few things to avoid rubbing.

You can search for more detailed info if you'd like.

Thanks for the response RVertigo, right after I posted I thought, "man, I should've done a search". Oh well, still getting used to this forum thing.  :)

I think I'll just stick with the 130.  :thumb:

Nothing wrong with the stock size...  Except that you're stuck with bias-ply.  GSJack is the Guru of tire posts...  And they're are TONS of tire posts.
