Title: The earth is flat!
Post by: Mr.7 on October 29, 2005, 08:07:34 AM
... that is according to these guys :?

If you are board and have nothing better to do, you may entertain yourself with the teachings of the Flat Earth Society

Remember, (and it took me a while to figure this out) these people are serious, so that gives us all the more reason to make fun of them!

Each point gets more and more rediculous...

I was seriously "lol"ing like every 20 seconds as I read it.

Seems the author paid full attention in English Comp, but forgot all about going to Physics.

Best quote:

1) Staying on top

Once again, picture in your mind a round world. Now imagine that there are two people on this world, one at each pole. For the person at the top of the world, (the North Pole), gravity is pulling him down, towards the South Pole. But for the person at the South Pole, shouldn't gravity pull him down as well? What keeps our person at the South Pole from falling completely off the face of the "globe"?

I've heard about this before, and there was even an interview on TV with a "flat Earther" or whatever they want to call themselves. I just shake my head at it, but it is good to see people challenging what we're told and questioning what seems to be so simple. It is a good exercise of the mind to think in a way completely different than our paradigms.

They are still nuts though  :P

QuoteUsing the "round Earth" theory, setting an object on the earth would be like setting grains of sand on a beach ball. Certainly a few grains would stay - right around the top, the surface is nearly horizontal - but when you stray too far from the absolute top of the ball, the grains of sand start sliding off and falling onto the ground. The Earth, if round, should behave in exactly the same fashion. Because the top is a very localized region on a sphere, if the Earth were in fact round, there would be only a very small area of land that would be at all inhabitable. Stray to the outside fringes of the "safe zone", and you start walking at a tilt. The further out you go, the more you slant, until your very survival is determined by the tread on your boots. Reach a certain point, and you slide off the face of the planet entirely. Obviously, something is wrong.

Ha Ha Ha

Way back in the 60s when I used to work for the local newspapers there was an old boy in Dover who was chairman of the flat earth soc, nice old boy, harmless enough. He was one of many local "eccentrics" or fruitcakes if you prefer. This area seems to have rather more than it's fair share of them.

Don't say a word.

I'm reminded of Stan Freberg Presents The United States Of America.

"It's round as your hat!"

"It's flat as your head!"

"I contend its round and its goin' be found, it's a round world now and its always been!"

"I contend its flat, as a welcoming mat, and you're sailing off the end..."

My favorite highlights:

As you may have already guessed, this site is filled with hundreds of small subliminal messages, each designed to re-educate the masses regarding a particular aspect of Efimovich's teachings. The result of continuous bombardment by these messages is that to anyone visiting this site, the impact on their subconscious (and eventually conscious) mind will be gradual and undetectable, yet in the end profound, leading to a 180-degree turn from following Efimovich to following the noble creed of the Flat Earth Society.

and

Your dog has joined us.

and

After spending over sixteen million dollars and using over 48 thousand yards of industrial strength strapping tape, we of the Flat Earth Society were able to construct an enormously powerful neurotransmitter that can implant suggestions directly into the brains of the nearby non-Flat Earthers. Having set it up just outside of the Russian Antarctic exploration post (Vostok), we are awaiting word that all three scientists and 174 penguins have been shown the light.

That was the one that went over the edge of the earth. That's why you only hear about the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.

If it went over the edge of the earth, then why didn't the other three go over as well?

Well, duh. Everyone knows why they didn't go over.

They thought they could sail faster if they all tied togather, but the Oglethorpe's captain was smart. He knew it would slow them down. So, the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria tied themselves togather and ended up slowing down considerably. Meanwhile the everyone on board the Oglethorpe was busy looking back, pointing and laughing; and fell off the edge of the earth.

People back then didn't get discouraged by such small things. After all eveyone knew the earth was flat; one small ship falling off was no big deal.
