OK, so I think I got the most aggressive cut you can get away with on an '01+. I wanted to sit back on the bit where the stock seat has a butt cutout and still touch the ground; on the last F, I had the seat cut so I could touch with the balls of both feet while I was slid all of the way forward, and I think that's why it bothered my knees - the farther forward, the more acute the angle. You can get a shortie of my dimensions to touch the ground slid forward by cutting just the foam. For what I wanted, I had to get the pan cut and reshaped a bit, as well.
A cheapo trim can be done just by pulling off the seat, trimming the foam, and getting your hands on a staple gun to restaple the cover. That will get your feet on the ground, if that's your goal, and I did that with my old F650. I went to Rich's for this one. It costs, but the guy knows what he's doing. He'll do the initial cut and shaping (and I opted for a gel pad), and you can come back once it has a hundred or so miles on it and has settled in order to get it re-tweaked.
Japanese gal with a mullet and a Harley with LEDs was just leaving. Well, the seat was nice.

This guy was getting a seat and a backrest made for his showbike. His tall, elegant blonde girlfriend was a sweetheart; we talked while the seats were being worked on. She wants to get her own bike so she can get off of the back and have control herself. :)

I took a pic on a stock GSF to give some idea of where I started. I'm slid all of the way forward, and one toe can touch while the other is dangling.

And after the cut, I can get the balls of both feet down while I'm slid much farther back. And thanks to the gel pad (not to mention the fitting to my own bod), it's much more comfortable than the stock seat. It was fitted to me with my back straight, so it keeps me honest in terms of posture. :)
