I have just bought a GS500F and have put about 500kms on the clock. When starting, the engine idles at about 1200rpm ... after a decent ride, the engine then idles at 2500-3000rpm and the engine becomes extremely noisy.
Has anybody else encountered this? Is this normal?
Hmm...I have an 05 gs500f and on mine it will idle higher after riding for a while when the temp is 80 or more, when I say higher I mean like 1500 rpm instead of 1300 riding when it's about 60-75 degrees.

Idle should be set when the bike is nice and warm and the choke is off. Mine was high, too.
When I got my bike, It was idling kinda high so I turned it down to like 1300 and then I took it in for it's 1st service and they turned it up to 1500. Why would they do that? Or do they just not warm it up all the way?
Take it back to the dealer. Still under warranty.
If the bike had more miles I would have the valves checked.
One of the indications that you need the valves done is crappy
starting and the revs shooting up after the bike has been ridden for a while and is fully warmed up.

Interesting. It sounds like my bike may have that exact problem. It doesnt like starting when cold, and the revs go from 1200ish cold to about 1900 when fully warmed.
I had the same problem with my '05 GS500f. When the dealer assembled the bike, the set the idle on a cold motor. Of course, at the time, I did not realize that was the problem.
You should be able to reach the idle adjustment while sitting on the bike. Take it for a ride, get it good and hot, and the play with the idle adjustment(stoplights, etc...) Oh, I do recommend a pretty solid glove for that left hand......

They did the same thing to me... It would idle around 1600-1700 when it was warmed up. High idles would make a bike run hotter at stop lights and such you'd think.

I adjusted mine without a glove... I had no gloves at the time! Hand would get burned, hand would reel back in shock, hand would go back in there to try and adjust the idle... Not very bright of me. I just pulled over in some vacant parking lot after a half hour of riding and put the bike up on the kickstand so I could see what I was doing.
You have to keep your hand up. The carburators aren't hot. Even the radiator fins aren't hot. The engine is.
Sounds like you need to send that hand to obedience school......
