Title: 2nd Gen SV Mirrors (Pictures)
Post by: Alphamazing on October 31, 2005, 10:20:00 PM
So I finally got around to getting some mirrors for the GS. After I took the fairing off all I had lying around were some junky $10 mirrors that vibrated at idle, showed an AMAZING view of my forearm, and only fit one side of my bars because the other mirror was reverse thread.

After looking at some aftermarket options, I decided to go with an OEM part so I could have some high quality parts without "donating" a kidney to buy some nice looking and functional aftermarket ones (There were some Rizomas I was looking at, but they were $90). After checking some other manufacturers that made mirrors that would fit mine (meaning not reversed thread, a la Ducati and Yamaha) the SV seemed like the most logical choice. I knew I could get some good ones in perfect condition for about $30 shipped if I look around. I debated between the 1st gen and 2nd gen (Round and rectangular, respectively) mirrors, looked at pictures, and finally went ahead and solidified my decision on the 2nd gen ones. A short while later I got a response from a guy on SVRider, offering to sell me his 2004 SV mirrors for $30, shipped. Perfect.

These things are wonderful. Adjustability all over the place, big, functional, heavy (to quell vibrations), but still inherently stylish. I am really digging the chrome, too.

It's so nice being able to see behind me finally.

I have to get some of those.
I have some round ones off my old Ducati Monster. I didn't like them on the Duc and replaced them with similar ones like yours.

Yeah, these are nice. They look dirtier in the pic than they really are because I had the manhandle them about. They're not really that bad.

You can also sorta see the hack job I did on my throttle sleeve to get my grip to fit correctly.

Heh. I'm still having to get used to not twisting my body all the way around to the left to look behind me and partially around to the right. That mirror I had on prior was absolutely useless. It's really hard riding without them.

Very nice.

You know, I wonder if it wouldn't be worth converting even an F to those.  If nothing else, they'd be easier to reach to adjust.

I love the SV mirrors...  The Rectangle ones are not THAT different, but different enough that I prefer them over the stock GS ones...

I like the look of the round ones too, but I'm sure the visibility is awful.

Just make a post on the SVRider forums saying you're interested in a set of 2nd gen OEM mirrors. Someone should get to you in a week or so.

I don't think you could, as the fairing mounts use two screws to hold the mirror on. This one would torque the stalk to much, and put too much stress on the fairing. With the two bolt design the stress is distributed over a larger area, thus reducing the forces on it. Also the F mirrors are plastic and light compared to these. These are solid steel, pretty much. I think you can use your GSX-R mirrors is you still have them.

Yeah, likewise. These are great. They look similar to the stock GS mirrors, but the chrome is a great difference, as well as how the stalk ataches to the post. The two-part stalk-and-stem it has is SO much nicer than the GS's bent look (where is comes up from the bar, then just bends to the correct angle, whereas this one goes up and stops, then has a stalk protruding from the side).

No, I mean put them on the bar mirror mounting points.  They're still there, just covered with rubber plugs (hey, you should know). ;)

You got rubber plugs with yours? Man, lucky! I don't know if that would be a viable option, really. The fairing clearance issues are the main, if only concern. These MIGHT clear the fairing at full lock, but I'm not sure. Don't you think it would look odd having a fairing with bar-mount mirrors?

Ja, but if I worried about looking odd, I'd never leave the apartment...  :P

Oh how true. It might work. Do you have the mirrors from your Pain in the Rear? Those might serve as a good test to see if you really want bar mounts.

Weazlenoze, you're having issues man.

Maybe Photobucket banned your IP. I can get to Photobucket on mine just fine, and it seems like others can as well. Did you piss PB off?

I like these mirrors more and more each time I ride. Highly reccomended. Much better looking than stock GS, IMO, and OEM quality.

I'd totally get them if I didn't already have mirrors...

Hmm...  Maybe I should break them...
