Post by: Mr.7 on November 01, 2005, 01:39:50 PM
The Blue Beast is now done for 2005 and it is time to pull the Rosignal Skis out from under the bed.

Were do you guys go to ski/snowboard?

All we have here is a glorified hill called Mad River Mountain                         (Mountain-Yeah right!! )

http://www.skimadriver.com/

I have also been to Snow Shoe Mountain in West Virgina, very cool :thumb:

so i spent all last winter living within a two hour drive of mt.hood, a three hour drive from batchlor, and a hour drive from the carnie park on 20.  I had the coolest mountian rig, a 87 trooper II  on 31's with a rack to haul snowboards.  and the only times I hit the mountian was when i was in socal up at bigbear.

OMG OMG OMG I CAN'T WAIT!!  *snow*

I was in Denver last weekend and 2 resorts are open already (not completely).  So Cal resorts are testing out their snow machines and getting ready!!

Me at Heavenly in Tahoe a couple winters ago:

Snowed in late november here in so cal last year:

A record snowfall year, hope this winter is just as awesome!

We ski mostly at a little ghetto resort in so cal called Mountain High (http://www.mthigh.com).  It's small, and is completely overrun by thug snowboarders.  Seriously, if you wanted to see snowboarding's equivalent of squids, this is the place.  But it is a super easy drive to get there (45 mins) and early season passes are $250.  Unfortunately, we get a little snow, and everyone kid in LA that has ever seen the X-games comes up to learn to snowboard.

I snowboarded about 13 days last year (not bad for a flat lander).  The last three of which were at Whistler  where there was NO FREAKIN' SNOW!   :x

This year, I'm hitting up Utah first.

Don't think I'll get to ski much this year, but then again it depend on where I wind up and whether I have a job or not.  :dunno:   Last year I skied about 8 times and maybe 2 times the year before.  I used to race so I could get out 3+ times a week.

I'm actually trying to sell at least one pair of skis because 3 is just too many when I don't have a job and don't ski as much.  Anyone interested in a pair of 180cm Atomic BetaRace 9.20's?  About 5 years old but well maintained

I am so excited, I can hardly stand it.  I skied probably a dozen days last year, and would have a lot done more if the mountains hadn't been closed so darn much.  Jen's record season came at the expense of our season, I'm afraid.  Damn pineapple express.

I check the weather reports here every day.  Finally started snowing in earnest this weekend, and looks like it'll keep it up.

Update:  I just checked the conditions at Crystal for, like, the 5th time today.    They're gonna open this Friday!

(It seems to me like a lot of us our gonna end up being skiers or borders.  Seems like the sort of thing that makes motorcycles appealing (speed, thrill, corners, whatever) are the things that also make skiing and snowboarding appealing.)

I haven't been a huge fan of the snow at Baker (otherwise, it's a really neat little area).  But then, I've only ever really skied there much last season (since everyone else was closed).  I found they'd leave they're snow ungroomed for way to long (holding on to the illusion that it was still powder, I guess), so it would all go to crap and be a pain in the ass to ski on and all chunked up.

That, and I'm no good at skiing moguls. :)

Lived 7 years in Portland, OR. Boarded all the time on Hood and Bachelor. Moved to Vail, CO for two years and I could practically touch the lifts from my deck. :)  Now I live in Asheville, NC. I'll probably get up a couple of times this season in Boone. I sacrificed a little snow for year-round kayaking and riding (well, nearly year-round). So far I'm happy with my decision, though I definitely do yearn for the 'Big' mountains sometimes. :P

you should have moved a hour south into the valley here, you are at most then 2.5 hours from everything, and if you have skills in a kyack, I may have to invite you out to go play and now thanks to NRS you can play in the water year round. here in the valley there are only about two weeks a year that there is ice on the roads.  I'm a hour and a half from the gorge and the best windsurfing in the world, never mind the sturgeon fishing.  I'm a hour from the coast, some of the best cold water surfing in the world.  and some of the best hanggliding.  im 2 hours from anythign on mt hood, 3 from batchlor (best board park in the nation) and 10 minutes from world class trout and steelhead flyfishing.  I'm 5 hours from the Rouge 45 minutes from the Santiam, 2 hours from the Dechutes, and no more than a days drive from almost every other river in the NW.  and portland is the microbrew capitol of the nation.

that's just because all the noobs never learned how to drop into a pipe on a skateboard getting off the lift is the same thing. then you just have to remember to strap in before bombing down the hill.

I strap in on the lift and head straight down the hill to the chair, repeat.

Sitting is done on the lift and in the lodge (unless I'm waiting for slow-asses or hurt myself bad enough that I can't stand).

Post by: Jake D on November 02, 2005, 01:27:43 PM
Okay, I snowboard with a skier.  By time he puts those straps around his wrists and fixes his goggles and hat and gloves and tightens his boots again because his feet hurt so damn bad he might die, I've got my board on and I'm waiting on him (and I don't even have Flow bindings).

And when you are on a steep slope and you stop to wait on a skier because he had a yard sale and lost the 10,000 things that were strapped to his dumb ass body, you have no choice but to sit down.  You have one edge to work with and a butt.  Pull up some butt and enjoy the view.

And I ride park most of the time anyway, so you have to wait for the landing zone to clear before going.  More sitting.

You still couldn't pay me to put skis on again.  I'd rather never see a moutain again.

Over the years seriously I hurt one knee twice and the other knee once...  I've screwed up both wrists, fracturing one, and hurt everything else on my body at least a little...  All while snowboarding...

That's not even counting the paintball stupidity...  Or the time I broke my nose doing yard work.   :x

Football padding is bulky...I'd recommend getting a pair of baseball sliding shorts.  Less padding, but more or less in all the right places.

Not really.  My point is that skiers annoy snowboarders as much as we annoy them.  Not to start a war here, but you guys stop at the top of every cool jump.  You never have any idea if a fast rider is coming from behind you .  You nail us with your poles when you sit on the chair lift.  And you feel to comfortable bitching at snowboarders for every little thing.  Etc.   I'll be the first to admit snowboarders get annoying sometimes.  I'm evan a snowboard apologist.  But skiers have there little bugaboos too.  We should all learn to get along.  Or skiers should just stick to Taos and let us have some fun.

If yer gonna sit, don't do it in the middle of the damn run!

Also, I've been hit serveral times by snowboarders, and only once by a skiier, who immediately apologized.

Also, beer is for the lodge, not the top of the lift.  It's annoying enough to dodge you guys strapping up coming off the lift, I don't want to have to the strappers and the cool kids with Miller in a can, too.

Also, you guys look so silly on the flat spots.

That being said, there are just as many @$$hole skiers as snowboarders, it's just more fun to make fun of the other guys.  And I live to far from Taos, I'd ski there if I could.

I actually tried snowboarding last season.  Towards the end of the already crappy season, me and my wife decided we were tired of skiing on rocks with our gear, so we rented snowboards and roade the bunny hill all day.  It was a lot of fun, and I'll probably do it again.  I didn't like feeling like my one leg was trying to drag me off the chair.  Looking over my shoulder while pointed downhill was a little weird.

And I swear snowboards were designed for maximum pain when you fall.  It was either forward onto the knees (ouch) or straight onto my butt (ouch!).

Other than that, it was a ton of fun.  But I already own all my ski gear, and I'm finally getting kinda good at skiing.  I really don't need to waste another two seasons falling.

I've got the ulitmate A-hole snowboarder story.

I was teaching my buddy Klink how to snowboard.  He'd never done it before.  He had skied a few times but thought snowboarding would be easy because "he was damn good skateboarder when he was a kid."  Anyway, we are on the second or third run and he was having a lot of trouble turning and controling his speed (no big deal, right?).  Before us, I saw an older couple, husband and wife, skiing.  Sure enough, Klink bee lines it for the old man and tries to slide out.  His snowboard slams into the back of the old man's legs and chaos breaks out all over.  Yard sale, etc.  The wife is reading Klink the Riot Act, screaming and pointing, so I get out of there and ride down 50 yards or so to watch.  They finally get the old man back together, scream at my friend a bit more, and get on their way.  Klink is sitting there the whole time with this,  :dunno:  "so sorry" act going.  The old man and woman get about 15 yards down the run when Klink stands up to come join me below them.  Sure enough, he makes a bee line for them again!  Same couple!  This time, he nailed the old woman!  Nearly destroyed her!

I'm sure I've never seen anything like.  He finally gets to the bottom where I'm waiting.  I asked him, "Do you hate those people or something?"

Heh.  I very nearly plowed over a little girl on my second or third time up on skis.  I got going way faster than I knew how to handle.  And I was going so fast that I knew it I tried to turn and bleed off speed I would surely die (at least, that's what it felt like), so I just had to keep going.  I see this small girl right in front of me.  I scream "look out!" and barely miss her, right before crashing losing complete control and crashing spectacularly.

That was a lot of fun.

I didn't have a with speed on a board, 'cause I just scrape down the whole bunny hill on my heel side.  And I don't think your friend was the @$$hole so much as the shouting skier, especially if you were on the bunny hill.  shaZam! happens, and it's not like he was trying to hit them.  You have to cut the noobs some slack.  He apologized, and no one got hurt, so no big.

armor=good.  I board with my rollerblade kneepads under my pants.  Also helps because most so cal snow isn't really snow at all.  It's white, and it's frozen solid, but it ain't snow.  Wrist guards are a MUST.  I broke my wrist like my 3rd time on a board, at night--went to fast, caught the back edge, ka-pow.

My husband skis and I board so we are quite the odd couple on the slopes.  I tried skiing last year and had a blast.  Not having to stap-in bindings was niiice.  Bought some used skiis in Vail last weekend, so I plan to do a little more two-planking this year.

Thousands of noobs where I ski, most spend the majority of their day sitting on the hill with a snowboard strapped on.  I like to cut over to the bunny hill and spray snow on them. :nana:
