Why do we need 37 posts everytime someone posts a question telling them to do a search?
f%$k,--just get over it you search nazis.
Answer the goddamn question.
I feel the same way. Hence, the creation of:
http://gstwin.variders.com/
Mostly since the search function works great if you know how to use it and don't mind sifting through a 10 page thread about purple lesbiens to find out what kind of air filter you should use.
It's all good. :thumb:
EDIT: Jake, if someone were to search in there, I hope we would find nothing. :P
and why would i want to seach your ass?
Geez...purple lesbian threads ain't NUTTIN' compared to a request to search someone's boo-tay! :o
FAQ looking GREAT, Phae!!!!!! :thumb:

yes rich, the FAQs look almost too good to be your creation  . i kid, i kid.
but with the search thing. seriously jake has a point. this has come up before and there isnt much to say but this... Being that this is a small forum with moderate activity, i think it would jsut be plain boring if it was just a search engine. the same questions get asked a lot, but whats the harm? there isnt a whole lot of NEW info being introduced so 99% of the questions people ask would be solved with a search. on the contrary, there would be 2.5 new posts per day. boring.
I think the thing to do it point out the search function when you have a few links for them to check out... That way, the newbs won't be pissed off becuase no one answered the question that's been asked 5,000 times in the last month. At least they'll have a resource to read and they might just try searching first next time.......
Simply typing "Search" doesn't do much since they weren't willing to search in the first place... There's no way telling them to search will make them search... Sometimes they have no clue what to search for (or spelled it wrong), so posting a few links might help them find the right term to search.
Posting a link to an existing topic is WAY better than everyone ignoring the post. :dunno:
heh, I think most of the time they say 'search' because that is 10x easier then figuring out the answer, or taking the time to think about it, or something else. Note: posting a picture of the search (that you took yourself) is only 2x easier. !! and one about the current faq is 2x harder! ;p
Tell someone an answer, help them today - teach them how to find the answer on their own and it will help them for a lifetime. I don't see anything inherently wrong with the "RTFM" mentality to some extent. Everyone needs a basline. But when "TFM" is disorganized and inadequate (not to mention it is not user friendly), it is hard to rely on. I know the search function is a little terse because I've used it a lot lately.
For example, if you type "synthetic oil" and "search all terms", you get 3 pages / 113 threads that mention "synthetic oil". The first 5 threads it returns:
1. Australia GS Riders Meets (19 pages)
2. Pandy is a PW (2 pages)
3. OILS... just a little poll (2 pages)
4. Interesting article on helmets (1 page)
5. front tire wearing on side (1 page)
Just an example. :dunno:
If you would just search the term "search", you would see that there are already 1549 threads concerning searching already... sheesh...
quit wasting my time with these lazy questions :nana:

+1 I couldn't agree more. It's simply too hard to put into words how useless and down right counter-productive it is when someone just replies with "search". On top of that, it makes the "search" replier look more lazy and pompous than the person asking the original question.

That's why you click: Display results as: Posts
You can read the post and see if it's even something near what you want.

5. front tire wearing on side (1 page)
Just an example. :dunno:
Fixed! :nana:
Actually, part of the problem with searching is that it does take FOREVER to find something! I searched forEVER to find all the information for building my own valve kit...I suppose, since I've consolidated this info, I should forward it for the FAQ, eh? ;)
I am a lesbien, not a lesbian, remember? :nana:
And yeah it would be nice if you contribute your learnin' to the FAQ for the greater good. Send it over (gs500faq@yahoo.com) and I'll stop spreading all those nasty rumors about you on the men's restroom walls all over the country...
...atleast for a week
..and of coruse I'll even give you the credit like I did everyone else whose ideas I plucked off of here. :P

If I started a new thread every time I had a question about GSs, I'd start three threads a day. The info in the archives is expansive, and easily culled.
This leaves me free to start three O&E threads a day about sex and what bike I should get this week. :P
general discussion has 13,198 topics and 139,680 posts.
odds n ends has 1,734 topics and 28,103 posts.
that's enough junk to answer all your noob questions including facts on color purple, lesbiens, rg's ass, and post whoring.
so quit asking questions! :nana:

Yeah everything that can be said has been said. We've reached the end of the Internet. :P
Instead of our GS discussions being on "prime time" we'll just watch re-runs instead :P
Pandy - So it is TRUE that you are going to ride on Srinath's bike?

Unless you want to find out who the reigning PWotW is (*cough*pandy*cough*). You've got to go to the test area for that.
And I'm not sure
all of my questions about rg's ass have been answered.

Likewise. I've learned a lot about my GS and about questions I'm having by searching. Sure it might take 5 or 10 minutes and some hunting around, but that's not really that bad. That's how I decided to go with my Sport Demons. I read through a bunch of old threads on tire choices and people's opinions on different brands and models and eventually came to the conclusion to buy the sport demons, without posting a NEW thread in the General section. When I found out today my engine was low on oil (read: dipstick was pretty and clean. How's that for scary?) I did a search and figured out it's most likely because I'm ringing the god damn bloody f%$k out of it on a weekly basis. I just have to check my oil more often now.
If the answer is usually simple I'll tell them, as well as informing them of the search function. Some people just don't know it's there.
If the search function were that intutivie, you wouldn't have to reply to every single new question with "use the search". People would just do it. Most are going to follow the path of least resistance, yes? Obviously it is easier to just ask a question than to do any kind of research.
If they ask a question that you don't feel like answering, why say anything at all? Just ignore it, someone else will either answer it, point them in the right direction, or the person asking the question will be forced to look up the information themselves.
Telling someone just to 'search' does not really help anyone. :dunno:
Quote from: PhaedrusTelling someone just to 'search' does not really help anyone. :dunno:
True, which is why I attempt to answer their question as well as introducing them to the Search function. I've seen plenty of people post, get told to search, and then come back shortly later and reply that they found it easily with searching.
Yeah, you got a point Alpha, and yes, you do give them an answer AND tell them to search for more information. That is ideal, really. Give them the short answer and tell them to search for more details. :thumb:
