Title: African Americans on GStwin?
Post by: ashman on November 07, 2005, 12:40:14 PM
Ok I've been thinking about this for a while and it seems a semi touchy subject. I dunno if this has ever come up or why it would but I'm curious. Are there any "black" people or african americans (p.c.) that post on GStwin. It seems we are mostly 20 something to late 40's white guys w/ some hispanics here and there. Dunno, tard farm it if you want. Just curious. Seems most black bikers ride sport bikes rather then cruisers. But most riders are white seemingly @ least in this part of the country.

 @ the joerocker comment.

For what it is worth, I am a 25 year old white guy. Yeah, I know, boring.

HOWEVER, I think a poll for everyone would be a better idea than just singling out black people. There are quite a few asians and people of Eastern descent here as well.

While it does not matter, it is mildly interesting if for no other reason to show that we all have something in common: a great motorcycle  :thumb:

PS Ash I have also wondered this myself, there's nothing wrong with it. It just seems like the people who post on here often have mentioned their race at some point and we've never heard anyone mention they are black nor have I seen a pic on the photo gallery of a black GS rider.  (except dolepineapple if I remember correctly)

OK, I'll bite on this topic. I'm 31 years old and African-American although I don't post much.

Here in Atlanta most black riders ride sportbikes, particulary Ninjas and GSX-Rs. But there are a few "OGs" (older gentlemen) who ride Harleys. Most don't actually ride much, using their bikes more as fashion accessories than a machine for exploring. Seeing that  I could care less about posing and love my GS500 and lust over Ducatis and Triumphs I am out of the mainstream here. Frankly, if you're on two wheels and not doing stupid stuff like "stuntin" during rush hour traffic, then black, white, latino, liberal, conservative, straight or ghey, you're OK with me. :thumb:

I feel this is a necessary thread jack... the term 'Eskimo' is no longer used to describe the indigenous population of Alaska and northern Canada. Respect is shown to these peoples by addressing them as Inuu, or singly, as an Inuit person.

why don't I just set up a poll or create a thread where everyone can send me their demographic info and I'll compile it.  Better yet I could use a survey program like Manjuls' stats project.  Being an epdemiologist I'm interested in all the fun stuff like age, gender, national origin, etc.

I know its not. You just have to be careful cuz so many idiots wear the PC mask I'm mr. midwesterner taking a stand cuz you cant discuss race, we dont discuss things like that anymore its wrong. there is a black guy that lives in my area, i talked to hime once and he was very nice.  Now go feel bad for what your great grandfather did. Shame on you southerner shammmeeeeeee.    I got one for ya, My roommate was a grocery stocker and one night a "slight impared" lady came up to him asking if he saw a woman in a something colored shirt. He asked well is she tall or short, she is average. ok. Is she black, white or.... She then gave him a lecture on how we have to move on past tings like that and what does it matter what race she is. True story. I'm sure someone has read my post and reacted in the above maner, e'gad. ash is a racist

Race only matters because people make it matter.  Curiousity aside.  I've never thought of anyone on this board or any other by race.  By bike maybe, but not race.  If you ride then I see you as a brother or sister (don't want ill to befall you), even though I don't own a GS.

I was once riding from Austin, TX to Houston, TX  and stopped for a gas at a place that had about 50 bikes. I think every single one was driven by a Texan of African descent. I talked to several guys that were riding tricked out Busas and there were lots of gixxers in the crowd too. One thing that struck me was that they were wearing a lot more protective gear than your average cruiser crowd in Texas. When I lived in NC I know there was a Goldwing club that was all African-American, I think they were also Masons. That said, I think I've seen industry numbers that reflect African-Americans are under-represented based on populations as bike purchasers.

I don't think anybody would feel excluded on this site because of their race (I hope not at least) We seem to be equal opportunity attackers of all members. We tend to devolve into prurient talk, especially with Kerry not around to keep us line.

I think that is referred to as 'color-shift' or 'chameleon' paint.  Its quite expensive.  How it works is that the multiple layers of paint on the surface (or bike, in this instance) have different indices of refraction (meaning they bend light at different angles) which splits the incoming light waves similar to how a prism does it, but less pronounced.

The reason why you see more black guys on sport bikes isn't a cultural thing... its an age thing.   How old were those guys you saw?  I'd put money on the fact that none of them were over 45 and almost none of them were older than 37.  Its similar to the the same way that younger riders have a tendency towards sportbikes.

I've never met any older blacks that rode motorcycles.  That probably has more to do with the absence of older blacks from the middle class than anything else.   Cheap used bikes are still 2X-3X the cost of a cheap car.. making them expensive toys.

Hmm well let's see.
I'm a 26 year old Black Japanese and White male and I ride a GS500. Where I live I mostly see older males riding cruisers and younger males riding sport bikes. I've seen a few younger (under 35) black riders on sport bikes, and once saw a whole group of black riders in LA who were all on Harleys. They all belonged to the same club because all of them had leaver vests that had the same name on it (I forget the name.)

I too find this topic to be interesting in that I would assume that if there were 1 out 1000 white people who ride bikes, then there should be 1-1000 black people. Total population would mean more white riders then black, but the percentage would be the same. This being said, I don't think that this is the case????? I'd be interested to find out why, but I haven't any idea other then economic factors????

There are so many different factors you can look at...  Finding the answer would be just as daunting as any other social trend study...  I think it has to do with interest............

I was reading a study on Internet usage.  Students of the same income were studied.  They found that white and asian students were more likely to have a computer at home and black students were more likely to use the computers at school.  :dunno:

There are tons of other trends like that...  Certain races/cultures/nationalities/backgrounds/genders tend to do certain things when you look at them as a group.

It's all a part of our kick-ass diversity.   :thumb:

I only find this amusing because every forum I go to, I see a subject like this pop up not to long after my first post. I think one thing that could be considered is look at who generally has expendible cash. People who are interested in bikes and can afford one generally take the luxury. If you choose to be flashy with your cash your going to go one of two directions, buy something expensive, or dump money into something cheap and make it nice (my theory behind sports bikes and lifted Chevy's with huge wheels). Anyhow, thats just my to cents. And uh... I got one foot on the Black man side of the house.

Im 29 & white w/ 1 tattoo. No beer belly but my hair is leaving me like a bullet train. And I see what this thread is all about. anybody ever see the movie Biker Boys? I saw some white guys in there. I'm not complaining though. I dont remember where it was set and I didnt give a s**t.
So what , big deal. My last job was retail loss prevention in a high volume and very high theft often violent store. I always had to ask.. "was the person white, black, hispanic, etc. It made me feel weird sometimes because I know how some people react. And if they were black, some people were afraid to say it. All it is to me is a description. The majority of black people are not actually "black" & most white people are not actually white. If you want to be PC it is african american and caucasian. And the only time you see that is on a job aplication or survey. I am caucasian in the winter and very close to african american in the summer. And you know what nobody else cares.

So why does the Encarta dictionary list "caucasian" as an adjective and "african american" as a noun?? they both could be adjectives and nouns. Who makes that decision?

My $0.02.

yeahp...i am

just turned 23

100% black, half -man, half-amazing

One of the reasons I enjoy riding is that despite race, background, etc., EVERYONE shows love. I've struck up hour long convos with a TRUE asian immigrant  guy (well, actually i was trying to schmooze a test drive on the gxsr 1000) and it was like talking to a brother...

My thought is: Race is just a concept to keep people seperate. Plain and simple. The more division you have amongst people, the better those in power can subjugate them....that's another subject though

If you break down most people, despite socioeconomic, race, ethinicty, country, etc... all we want is to be happy. f%$k, i'm ranting...

Well,....I'll be the big 3 0 this year and I'm African American(That's right,Srinath  ). Topics like this don't bother me, even when the more outspoken members of the board get on and say there peace. It's just the internet.  I say have a damn beer and calm the hell down

I'm Jamaican American, but I don't drink beer.  If you follow the linky things to my web page, then you can probably spy a few photos of me somewhere in my photo gallery.

okay Ash...... so you can keep count.

I'm 40+ pale skinned woman, just another person who loves to ride.

Now show me the totals...... 8)

No really, it took some guts to ask on a public forum ASh.....you rock. it really does not matter in the long run what color our skin is....just that we ride and like to be around other riders.

hey lets not exclude anyone, is ther any american-tibetans or american-mongolians or even any american-afghanies ?
lets not limit ourselves. open up the full range of the united coloured states.

Here in Australia 25% of our population wasn't born here.
We are quite multicultural. but it is only recently (last 5 years) that we have had an influx of africans. But i must say i haven't seen any on bikes either !
but i think in my 10yrs of riding i've only seen 3 asian bike riders.
Yep, we also have our fair share of white males, 20-40yrs old, beards beer bellys tatoos.
i got the tatoo, half a beard and a bourbon and billy belly.
p.s. if you yanks want to try some real beer try some aussie beer. 8-14%
we let kids drink your budweiser  at birthday partys !!!

that what we don't get enough of here, a bit of friendly jest in the my countries better than yours.
i cop crap from the english guys about us aussies are their criminal rejects. i tell them what a punishment. sent from rainy old england to a tropical paradise. poor us.
but it seems i digress and have gone on to spout a whole lot of irrelevent crap, but hey thats what i am good at.
