Post by: FFDougK on November 08, 2005, 09:05:52 PM
Today travelling down I-65 I saw a guy driving a Ninja doing about 80...not all that uncommon for Louisville.  What bothered me was his riding position.  I've seen many people tuck in behind their windscreen on the highway which basically gets their upper body parallel to the ground.  In addition to that, this guy had his legs tucked up behind him with his feet up on top of the seat on the tail of the bike.  His whole body was parallel to the ground.  Is this a common riding stance, or just totally crazy?  I've never seen someone ride like that.  Just wondering.

Thanks for the read...

I hate to be the first to respond as there are so many wiser than me... but I'll do it anyway :)
I personally think that its stupid.  To me tucking his legs up like that really wont serve any aerodynamic purpose that anyone will ever need to do in their entire riding life. If he needs to brake or downshift his reaction time might as well be that of a 100 yr old (dead) person. It also raises his center of gravity making the bike kind of top heavy right??

maybe his chicken legs were cold?? :dunno:

I sometimes put my feet on the passenger pegs and lean more against the tank. It feels ok but I noticed it is top heavy when I do that also.

It also seperates your feet from vital controls. It's a bad idea.

I saw a biker do it on I70 east of Columbus a few months ago.

Here's the originator (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21592&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=20) of it.

Scroll down to my post of 11/7.

Ive done this before too, but it is a good point of not being able to access the controls, but yunno, better than the seat

I have used the rear pegs before.  I only do this if riding on the highway for any distance, as long as it is not congested traffic.  I have never done this while city driving though, takes to long to get them back on the brakes/shifter.

Yes I agree, only with extended periods of highway use with minimal traffic.

It's a bad idea at ALL times. Not only does it raise your center of gravity, it isn't a natural seating position. I don't care how freakin' long your legs are, passsenger pegs are for just that, PASSENGERS. What if there is suddenly something that jumps out in front of you? You make one false move and you're f%&ked. It doesn't give you any leverage on the pegs, which is condusive for turning (seriously. Weighting the pegs is a major thing, wether you realize it or not.) Not only the whole lack of controls thing, but it just plain doesn't make sense. If you're sore, stick your leg out to the side for a bit and then stick it back on the right peg. If you're REAL sore, just pull the f%$k over and rest. It isn't like the GS is some supersport thing with horrible ergos not meant for touring.

What are these strange things called passenger pegs..

I would think the freeway would be a horrable place to do such a thing. A crash there would have a great chance of killing you. (big semi etc)

I agree with AlphaFire X5. If you find the bike so uncomfortable you have to use passenger pegs then get a larger bike you are putting yourself in so much danger and you look stupid.

doesnt really change your center higher but it changes your proception of center greatly, as well as your leverage over your own weight.

it's nice to rest your ...ahem... chest on the tank, actually! Very comfy for me :) In my opinion I can't get low enough - I love it.

I put my chest on the tank when I tuck, but I leave my feet where they belong...

I often put my belly on the tank, but I keep my feet by the controls.

Amen, sistah!!! This is one of the things I'm absolutely enjoying about the SVS: being able to rest the....uh...top-heavy upper body on the tank, and take ALL pressure off of shoulders and wrists!! VERY, VERY comfy!  :thumb:

Yes, it does move your COG higher. Your legs are higher up than they used to be. Your legs weigh a considerable amount, one of the largest percentages of your body (next to your torso). When you raise that amount of mass up, it raises the center of gravity.

I lay on the tank at tuck but leave my feet where they belong.  On extended trips when I think about streaching, i just take a break.  On that not I am with davipu, we want pics 8)

I lean down on the tank bag (which is 5 or 6 inches high).  If I were to lean down any further, I wouldn't be able to tilt my head back up enough to see the road. As it is I don't do it for long 'cause my neck gets sore.

Sometimes if I need to take all of the pressure off my arms for a bit, I'll  put the balls of my feet on the pegs and lift my heels.  This brings my knees far enough up that I can actiually rest my elbows on my knees.  Then I lean my chest on the tank bag.  It's a nice break.

On the highway, to get a stretch for a few minutes, I hang my feet on the rear pegs and lean on the tank bag which is pretty thick. Feels very comfortable. Sometimes I just put one foot back at a time to increase the safety aspect. I have never done any of this near City traffic or on highways that are anything but 'near prairie' condition - u know - straight and almost flat with wheat fields on the sides, not trees. Anyway I do it once in a while. I've stuck my legs out to the side to stretch but had a pretty bad experience with muscle cramping in my hip!  :o Bloody hell that hurts and you can't stretch it out until you stop and get off! So the rear pegs work best for me in this situation.

I had to do it on one on trip from Kelowna to Edmonton. 950kms and I did it in 12 hours total with 3 breaks for food and fuel. Had to get home from the Sport Bike West Rally because my wife was in hospital having emergency surgery to remove her appendix!  :o I would never have been able to do it on any bike that wouldn't allow the room to move around and lay down on it like the GS does. Great bike!  :thumb: I keep thinking about this every time I consider 'moving up'.
Take care and Ride Safe you southerners!
