My dealership fixed my "intermittent soft clunk" KNOCK-knock-knock!
I reported the knocking at my 600-mile service (over a year ago--I bought my bike in July of '04), and the guy in charge at the time sort of laughed it off. He was *not* a GS lover--he saw it as a beginner bike, old technology, and apparently not worthy of attention. After the service he said they didn't find anything out of the ordinary with my bike.
I researched the camshaft end float thing pretty thoroughly, and although it sounds like it's not likely to be a problem, it *is* sort of annoying, and really--it shouldn't sound like a bucket of bolts. But I didn't pursue it any further.
My GS developed a leak at the shift lever toward the end of this summer, so my husband took it in to the dealership to have it looked at. In his discussions with the service folks at the dealership, it came to light that the guy who doesn't love GS's isn't there anymore, and that it's possible that less than superior attention was given to my bike when it was in for the 600-mile service (like possibly no attention at all). Mr. BlueByYou asked them to re-evalute the problem. They found 2.5 mm of play when they got in there. KNOCK-knock-knock, indeed.
They saw that the service record showed that we'd reported the knock at that time, and they stepped up and not only fixed my shift lever oil leak under warranty but also replaced my intake and exhaust camshafts. No more knocking! :thumb:
So now I got no knock, and I love my dealership again.

I had no knock, then decided to look in there. Now I am a knocker. I'll have to go back now. :lol:
2.5mm play ... nice ... they swapped camshafts ... huh ... I thought it was a head issue not a cam shaft issue ... anyway suzuki's shims 1.2 mm on each side will have eaten nicely into the 2.5mm of end play ... BTW I had one that was at !.5mm for 10K miles ... at which point I gave up and welded to the inside of the cam towers and ground it out to fit ...
