Title: tasting the unexpected
Post by: Church6360 on November 10, 2005, 08:53:03 AM
ever go to grab somthing from the fridge and think you have one thing, but realize after you put it in your mouth that you were wrong about what you grabbed?

like thinking the pickle slice you swiped was a bread and butter, but you actually got a dill one instead (both jars had lables facing away).

that feeling of "Huh?" that you get, like thinking there is one more stair and trying with complete conviction to force your foot through the concrete on the bottoe floor.

is there a word for that feeling?

that "hey this is one funny tasting bread and butter pickle!" and the swift correction you mentally make and say"ah, a dill pickle is in my mouth, i've made a mistake"

if there isn't a word for that feeling, there should be.

grabbing a pickle thinking it's a stick of butter is one thing. but if you actually took the pickle and spread it on a slice of bread and ate it, you might want to get yourself examined.   :dunno:

How about the Coke can filled with spit from someone dipping?  :o

AKA never put your drinks around someone who chews tobacco  :P you might just grab the wrong one!!

I used to put milk into empty soda cans and offer people a sip...  The look on their face was so damn funny...  They always thought it was something unimaginably nasty and wanted to kill me...

Then I'd tell them it was only fresh, cold milk.   :thumb:

On several occasions I've reached for my glass of water and accidently picked up someone's gin or vodka.  That catches you off guard.

I had that happen...

First thing in the morning...  Just woke up tired as hell.  I saw a gatorade just calling my name.  Cracked the lid and took a HUUUUGE drink.

It was GIN & JUICE!!   :x  :x

It was hard to get motivated that morning.

Somatosensory conflict is when the inputs from your peripheral nervous system don't match the expectations of your brain. Your example of the "missing stair step" is a demonstration of that principle. Technically, you would not use somatosensory conflict for tastes because they are part of the gustatory system, so how about "gustatory conflict".

Of course our sensation of taste is really a mixture of input from our taste buds and our sense of smell (olfactory system).

So I hereby coin the term, gustolfactory conflict for the pickle problem.

gustolfactory conflict... hmmmmm, i like it. now i finally have a word for what i felt (this happens often enough to me that it was bothering me that i didn't have a word for it).

and uh, jetswing,
it was the bread and butter variety of pickle that i was intending to eat, not actual bread and butter,
unless of course you were joking, in that case    but if i really was grabbing bread slices and sticks of butter and saying "this pickle tastes funny!" then yes, i would need checked out.

thanks for the help lenny (althought i may call it watdafux syndrome for certain situations.)
