I was reading the 1 dollar tankbag do-it-yourself bit, and I got to wondering... Just how strong are the magnets in a hard drive compared to the ones used by cortech, oxford, joe rocket, icon, etc etc? Could I buy a stronger bag for say... 20$ or so, some stronger magnets for 10-15, and have a nicely sized bag for 30? If anyone knows about magnetic strength, and can explain it in idiot layman's terms, I'd be greatly appreciative =)
The magnets out of 3.5" disc drives are very strong. I have a feeling the steel backer plate helps to direct the flux, but I've never really bothered to experiment.
I do know that on a flat 18ga. steel surface under bearing load, a 3.5" disc drive magnet provides about 50 lbs of pull. I put handles on them and use them around the shop for moving sections of sheetmetal.
One of the strongest i've ever played with was out an old school microwave i massacred....it pulled the paint off my fridge though :o

The back plate isn't doing much at all except hold it on and they bolt it to the fixture. The magnets are horrendously strong ...between 2 of them if you get a little skin caught ... yea you'll howl in pain ... Tiny magnets and insanely strong.
Cool.
Srinath.
yeah i had some out of an old HD with 5.5 inch platters. You could take the magnets and if you got on within 5 inches of the other they would snap to life. Pinched my hand many times playing with them. Out of a normal 3.5 inch they are really strong as well. The $1 tank bag you could make with laptop hard drive magnets.
They are all wussy compared to these (http://www.medical.philips.com/us/products/mri/products/) magnets. Can you believe I get paid to work on these things. What a great planet!
Of course the only proble with them is that your GS gets stuck to it rather than the other way around.
