So here's my dorm room. I've got a few posters hanging, but nothing special. What can I do to spruce this place up a bit? My roommate's side is like mine, except he has no posters, no books, no computer, no nothing. It's just a bed and blankets. I want my side to pop even more than it does compared to his.
So come on people, let's hear some ideas for this place. I'm also willing to accept any and all posters, objets, paintings, objetcs d'art, etc.. that anyone would like to send me them.
Ideas, people. Go!

Yeah! I've had it since forever. I didn't use it after 5th grade until now. It was just sitting in the closet unused. I found it covered in dust in the back of the linen closet on the top shelf back in July. Too hot to use it then, but it's perfect here.
  looks better than my dorm room did. And that blanket is awesome. The only thing i could think of is maybe a plant of some sort. I have never been a decorator though

!! Good idea! I've got a bamboo plant my dad's riding buddy gave me when I was in the hospital. That will look nice.
we were allowed a small fish tank in my old dorms. You also might consider some kind of fake plant to put somewhere for a little more color

Fish and I don't agree. I've killed two beta fish, as well as countless goldfish. I've given up. I am going to bring the bamboo plant in though.
I bet that you didn't have a small tank with a filtration system in it. I think fish is a good idea. It is just hard to keep the little buggers alive without a tank with a filtration system. They sell little tanks with activated carcoal filers, get one of them and you can keep a beta alive for.....well as long as a beta lives. Dito for goldfish, or you could even get small tetras or neons, just not to many in a small tank like that.
beer cans???....empty bottles of booze???? some dead hookers????

I had a charcoal filtration filter hooked up to a small tank. I even had the bubble maker thingy for the gold fish, as well as a water treatment kit and other bits and goodies. I like Tetras and neons a lot, we used to have some, too. From what I remember, they were pretty cheap. I'll look into it. Not much room for them though, that's the problem.
Step 1: Get rid of all that geek shaZam!.
Step 2: Get a huge stash of wine coolers.
Step 3: Invite chicks over.[/list:u] There... Done.
Your room already looks pretty darned good! :thumb: Decorating is such a personal thing! You've got the moto stuff.... that's a good start...tells people who you are....what you like... :)
Hmm.... +1 on a plant or two...there are some very easy ones, plus plants help clean the air! ;) If you're thinking chicks, get a stuffed animal for the bed. I'm not kidding! It shows you're a sensitive kind of guy! A couple of throw pillows on the bed would work, too, and/or a throw folded at the end of the bed, depending on how cold it ever gets there (plus, it would be a blankie to cover the eventual "her"'s cold footsies.
So much good stuff can be found at the dollar store, too! Also, take a look at the ikea website. Even if you don't have one near you, it can give you some good ideas!
I love that bedspread, too!
How long did you wait from time to filling of the tank to time of putting the fish in?

Quote from: natedawg120How long did you wait from time to filling of the tank to time of putting the fish in?
Enough time for the water temperature to equalize with the air around it. Same temp as the fish in the bag. I'm just bad with fish.
RVertigo: I totally would have a big rack of wine in here if I was allowed. Expulsion :( Soon as I get my apartment though... whooooeeee.
Pandy: I've got two blankets already! And two pillows! The stuffed animal thing is an interesting thing. It's a possibility. I've got some that were given to me when I was in the hospital. I'll use one of them! :)
Limited space is my biggest factor here. I don't know my roommate (nor do I ever see him) so we can't stack the beds. He sleeps during the day, I sleep at night. He doesn't go to classes, I do. Time schedules for us don't exactly mesh. If I did get to stack the beds I'd have a freakin' couch in here with a lot more room on the walls for everything.

If you add it all up, I've got 12 motorcycle posters, 2 music posters, and 2 movie posters. Twelve. They're all over the place, too. I've got my helmet there too, and my leather jacket is usually on the chair. And to think, some people come in here and ask, "Hey, you've got a motorcycle?" or my favorite, "You like motorcycles?"
No freakin' duh.
Find some highlighters and pull out the insides and put that in an empty boose bottle (grey goose looks the best). Fill it with water and add a black light.

Some guy over on the corvetteforum had an extra C4 ZR1 LT5 engine, and made that into a table.

Now THAT is a table I want.

yeah dude. you need a "plant" and some blacklights.
if he had a "plant", he would need a grow-light, not a blacklight
The plant thing will add some color. It's bamboo so it will never die. As for the blacklights, I dont think that's very much my style. Plus the whole lack of power outlets is a limiting factor.
OH MY GOD I GOT WHAT HE WAS SAYING. I AM NOT A DIRTY HIPPIE.

http://www.firsttankguide.net/sitemap.phpStart with some paint on the one wall that is against the wall. sage green for that sensitive look, ducati red for lusty color...then use a different hue of the same color for inside the bookshelves (only the back of the shelves, behind the books and shaZam!).
then buy a solid color blanket and you might end up getting some poon-tang...
If only I could paint the walls... I would so go for Green, Red, and White. Decked out with all the Ducati stuff I've got it's only fitting, right?
I've got a girlfriend, too, so I think I'm set in that department. ;) :thumb:

That's why I'm asking for ideas, man! You had some good ones, but the dorms are pretty strict on their "Don't f%$k up our rooms" policy.
Here's some stuff we're not allowed to bring:
Microwave/Refrigerator (provided)
Pets
Halogen lamps over 120 watts
Crock Pots, electric woks and skillets, George Foreman Grills, hamburger cookers, hot plates, rice cookers, toasters, toaster ovens, deep fryers, bread cookers, coffee/drink warmers and any appliance with open heating coils.
Candles, incense or anything with an open flame (oil lamps, lighters, etc.)
Extension cords, multi-plug converters
[/list:u]
I can't even have an extension cord. It's a pain in the ass.
A small bottle of massage oil always helped me out
Quote from: zukiGS500A small bottle of massage oil always helped me out
Brilliant.
I also suggest a copy of Moulin Rouge. While there is alot of singing and techincally its a chick flick, its got some good eye candy. And the ladies, they love it. The couple of years I lived in the dorms, I never hit less than a double after watching it with a girl. Even the one time there was two of them. (damn that was a fun and drunken night)
if you cant paint, head down to your nearest discount fabric store and color the walls with fabric laid flat and stapled to wall (you can figure something out). that way there's color, and maybe a subtle pattern, and you can return to normal when you leave. Also try cutting 1/4" plywood to fit in back of the shelves and paint those-think of everything in such a way that you can return to as-original condition quickly...

:O man, that sucks. No extension/multiplug cords? I just counted over 28 items pluged in in my room. There's about 5-10 more that are unplugged/unused too.
No toasters? How do you get your toast? ;) Fry it in a pan? What about BBQ's? (out on a deck?)
Damn, I would be breaking a few of thoes rules if I was there. Just switch it up so no one can see/tell, and change it when/if they inspect?
Oh, how about a cool big tapestry? Or a real nice big rug?
Tasteful, motocross posters with chicks in bikinis should do. I'm tempted to say to paint over the wood, but I like wood and they probably wont allow you to.
Quote from: AlphaFire X5Here's some stuff we're not allowed to bring
What are these "rules" that you keep talking about? Did they have those when I was in school? Probably did, I seem to recall someone yelling at me about something-or-other. Hrm. I'm pretty sure I wasn't listening. Maybe I was drunk. Come to think of it...the odds of that are pretty good. Either drunk or hung over. Either way, I'm sure I was in no mood to listen to anybody go on about their "rules".
Quote from: NightRyderDamn, I would be breaking a few of thoes rules if I was there. Just switch it up so no one can see/tell, and change it when/if they inspect?
Right...I thought that was half the point of going to college in the first place. They make these rediculous rules and you have to develop the judgement and creativity to break them in ways that get you into enough trouble to build some character, but not enough to do any serious damage.
Quote from: scratchTasteful, motocross posters with chicks in bikinis should do.

The Acrobots from thinkgeek.com rock! Ya need a table to trip over. I suggest you go down to the electric company (Possibly the cable or phone company, but they're not as heavily built.) and pick out a clean and undamaged cable spool like this:
Yeah, the *do* come in smaller sizes. Sand it down with to 220 and varnish it with a couple coats of spar varnish. Really cool table for under $20 that's impossible to break, unlike wally world crap.
You can optionally put a piece of glass on top. Go to the glass shop and have them cut something to fit. It's not necessary though, and I think it detracts from the industrial beauty of it.
Oh, man Geep, that's a cool heads up. Ill have to remember that one.

I believe the correct term is "dustcatchers".
Loft the bed and put a sofa or futon under it. :thumb:
Also, if you get fish, make sure you get a lid for the tank. I had zebra dano's (sp) during college, came back from Christmas break and noticed a couple where missing. Found them in the spring while moving out. They were all dried up on the floor behind the desk. :o
One last thing, the list of prohibited items should be treated as more of a suggestion. I had a full sized fridge my first year in the dorms, it held tons of beer!!!

I'd loft the bed, but I've got nothing to raise it up with. I'd bunk the bed with my roommate's, but we don't know each other, nor have matching schedules (I sleep at night, he stumbles in in the early morn, sleeps during the day).
I might try to go with the cloth thing on the walls. That's a good idea. Depending on wether I get my roommate request or not, I might add full carpeting.

So, I put in a roommate change request and I'm thinking it's going to happen. I'd be rooming with my friend, so we're going to turn this place into something special.
We're going to bunk the beds and put them perpindicular to the wall, against the dressor. We'll put a recliner in between the desk and the beds, and put a couch on the opposite wall. We're going to cover all the walls with colored fabric, per Pablo's suggestion, and cover up the staples with posters and stuff. We're going to put a surround sound system in here with 12 speakers and 2 dedicated subwoofers. We're planning on covering the entire ceiling in posters, like the Sisteen Chapel or something, except with cool stuff.
This is going to be freakin' sweet.
I don't know how I killed the Beta, but I did. I just don't agree with fish, I guess.
I like the idea of the family pictues stuff... I'll have to dig some out from back home.
During my one resident year, I saw rooms converted into double-deckers. Youl build a plywood platform that covers most the floor area, build a staircase. You sleep under the platform, store your crap beneath, and on top, there you put your shaggin' lounge. TV, sofas, fridge, carpet...
Of course, I went to an engineering school. They did things like that.
Bunk beds are cool, as long as you don't mind people sitting on the bottom bunk all the time. Otherwise, build a couple sturdy lofts and save even more floor space :)

Exactly! As soon as I get a new roommate I'll spice this place up like no other. Two engineers in the same room... madness.
Whatta cool idea to make the rooms double level.. It'd be interesting to see pictures of stuff like that lol. I'm not living in a dorm but my room is pretty small but its very open and doesn't look good that way. In my opinion a room with a lot of stuff shouldn't have big blank spaces in it heh. Having said that my solution was to put up a partial canopy above my bed, which is a work in progress still, but the girls think its a sweet idea 8)
Hey everyone!
So after the first semester with my crappy roommate I moved into a new dorm, and a new room, with my friend Dirk. We are pretty happy with our room so far, and it's pretty nice considering the fact it's a dorm room. We've got a walk in closet and a private bathroom, fully moveable furniture, and a window that opens (shh! It isn't supposed to, but allen wrenchs allow us to lock it).
Here are some pictures of our new room. We've got an 8 speaker surround sound system wired up with 2 woofers behind the recliners, as well as extended S-Video and audio cables to the entertainment center so we can watch movies from our laptops (which we put in the entertainment center above the TV). \
So, what else can we put in here to make it even better?

We have limited options for managing our wiring. Can't tape anything along that big white tube (soffit or soppit, I think) and the walls aren't very sticky, which is why there is so much duct tape.

why not run the wires along the floor and go up to the speakers then?

No carpet to cover the wires up and we don't want people to trip on them or drag their feet and mess them up. We could tape them down, but it still looks tacky.
