Left to right. Left: Peel off the left grip. Undo the screws for the switchbox and let that dangle. Completely slacken the clutch cable at both ends and remove the clutch cable from the lever. Loosen the mirror mounting bolt, and if you can, slid it off the handle bar (doubtful, you may have to wait until you take off the controls off the other side and unbolt the bars).
Right: Slacken the throttle cable. Remove the screws for the switchbox, remove the cable from the throttle tube, slide the throttle tube off, and let the switchbox dangle. Remove the master cylinder mounting bolts, and I just let that dangle, but that's me. Now, unbolt the handlebars and slide off the clutch perch.
Assembly is the reverse.
hope this helps.
I
think the easiest way is:
1. Remove the bar ends.
2. Start on one side, loosen the controls and attempt to slide it off without wrecking anything. (You have to pull the grip on the clutch side before the controls will come off. No need to pull the grip on the throttle side.)
3. Once that side is off, unscrew the other side and remove it.
Substep - If you can't get the controls off with the bars on the bike, try taking the bars off and working on the controls. :thumb:
4. Totally remove the bars from the triples by unscrewing the 4 hex-bolts and removing the little aluminum blocks.[/list:u]
Then work in reverse... 1. If the new bars don't have holes drilled for the tab on the controls (you should see the wholes in the old bars and the tabs on the controls once you remove them), then you have two choices... You can file the tabs off the controls or drill holes for the tabs in the new bars. It's easier to just file the tabs off, but you might run the risk of them rolling slightly...
2. Once you have the tabs/holes sorted, time to install the controls on the bars. If they're painted/powder coated, you might need to sand them down a little to get the controls in place...
3. Install the controls on one side, then the other... Then attach to the triples again and install the bar ends... If you have a pre-'01 (I think), you may have closed bars... Then you'll have to figure a different way to attach the bar ends... You can order the little rubber expander attachment from any parts place.[/list:u]

Just a tip... Don't *BAM* *BAM* to adjust things... You might end up breaking the filament on the lights in the dash... (I know from experience).
[edited for people with skillz (unlike me)).
Good on the details I missed, but working on parts on the bars while they're not bolted down to something, is like trying to hammer something you're holding up in the air, instead of holding it down on the workbench.
I just found it impossible to get the controls off with the bars on the bike... I guess it's just a matter of skill.
Probably try getting everything off with the bars off first, then in the case of failure, try with bars off. :thumb: That's basically what I did... Failed with bars on, took bars off and it worked.
Oh, detail: When re-installing, don't tighten everything down until you have gotten all the controls and the handlebar in the positions that you want them (handlebar first).
Thanks a ton... Very helpful... i HEART you guys
