Title: New owner of a gs500 and I have a question
Post by: Pretzel on November 20, 2005, 03:56:33 PM
I am working on my sisters girlfriends bike and I would like to know if someone can send me a scan of the wiring diagram. The bike has been sitting for a couple years before she got it. I am troubleshooting 2 things.....

(1) The starter button isn't energizing the starter coil. (I can jump the starter solenoid and it turns good)

(2) There is no spark from the coils.

Thanks for any help.

This might help, it's a scan "lifted" off a UK site very similar to this one.

Thanks for the link. I printed it and I am heading back out to the garage.

Hmm, perhaps a check on the engine kill switch before you go digging through the wiring.
Obvious I know, but sometimes overlooked.

Check out John Bate's simplified starter circuit diagram...CLICK HERE.

Good luck and let us know if you need more information.

ok I fixed the electrical problem and got the bike to fire up but never seemed to warm up. I had to leave the choke on for it to stay idling. If I turned the choke down even the slightest amount it would die and at full choke it would idle high and any blip of the throttle would kill it. Probably doesn't help that it is below freezing temperatures outside today and the bike has sat for 2 years.

I do have a few more questions.

    1. Why does the bike have 2 petcocks?

    2. Which way is on at the tank (up and down?)

    3. On the 2nd petcock is up prime (for cold starts)
         to the left for reserve?
         down for on?

    4. Is there no off position on the second petcock?

My guess is that after two years storage, the carbs need cleaning.

1. The tank petcock is used when taking the tank off.
The frame mounted petcock is vacuum operated, which gives it an automatic off/on feature.

2. Vertical is on.

3. Prime (up) is used to fill the carbs when they are dry. (not for cold starts)
Left (forward) is reserve.
Down is ON, the normal run/off position.

4. No off position. Engine off, petcock closed; engine on, petcock open.

I am use to working on older carb specifically the Kei Hin with a single petcock off/ on /reserve. That are gravity fed.

I assume these carbs do have fuel pumps then? Any detailed instructions on rebuilding them will I need gaskets. What size are the slow jets and mains. Do they have sliders or butterflies? Any incite would be great. Thanks guys.

No fuel pumps, just gravity feed.

I can't help you with your other questions since I have never worked on my carbs.

Try the search function, I'm sure there is a lot of detailed info for you, but it's not easy to find.
