hi i need to change my oil and filter and am about to purchase the filter online right now and i thought i might as well buy the oil while im at it.
How much oil does a 05 gs500f take. i have a survice manual but im too lazy to look for it at the moment.
thanks.
If you are replacing the oil filter, then the GS will take just under 4 quarts.
3 quarts is not enough and 5 will leave you with one unopened bottle
Or as the haynes manual puts it
oil change 2600ml
oil + filter change 2900ml
filling after an engine rebuild 3200ml.
Three quarts has worked for me on 97 and 02 for over 100k miles. I just put the three in and it's a bit over full if filter is not changed and a bit under full with a filter change.
My 97 Owner's Manual sez:
3.1/2.6 US/Imp qts with filter change or 2900 ml
2.7/2.3 US/Imp qts without filter chg or 2600 ml
I recall reading that the oil-cooler equipped GS's took more. If so, take this into account...3qts may not be sufficient.
And, always buy an extra quart for when you have to top it up. Like when you check your oil level every week.

check the manual? i'm not sure if there's any changes from '04 to '05 but when i had my '04, it took about 3.5 qts to top it off with a filter change.
Hmm. Hearing this I don't feel AS bad as I do for being a quart low last time I checked my oil. Thank you everyone!
It says on the engine how much oil it takes.

Yeah but he has a manual and is too lazy to look...
I think it takes 8-10 quarts. :P jk.
I have a 2005 GS500F and mine takes just over 3 litres with filter change, and I have a question, the group i ride with recommends changing the oil every 5000km, and the filter every second oil change, is this right?
No. Change the filter when you change the oil. By not changing the filter you're contaminating the new oil. It's a false economy.
na if anything You want to change the filter more often than the actual oil. That filter is what traps all the metal filings and engine sludge. <<are bad<< @ 4qt [ya I like to roundup  ] just change the oil/filter every 2kmiles or sooner....shoot you were using metric....2kmiles=??km
