I object to Thanksgiving.  I also object to Columbus Day but if you all want to celebrate holidays that esstentially celebrate  the subsequent slaughter of hundreds of thousands of people than that is your business.

Well, my Thanksgiving is the celebration of my family getting together and sharing a meal... definitely thankful that we're able to do this, and that we can afford to put turkey on the table and have pumpkin pie for dessert!

Holidays mean different things to different people, and we can celebrate what we believe in or not celebrate at all!  :thumb:

It is my favorite holiday.

And thanksgiving was an idea first thought of by the indians, so I celebrate it to honor them.  I've never celebrated Columbus day.  didn't know you were supposed to.  But remember, the indians gave us turkey, maze, and popcorn.  So that is a lot to be thankful for.

Personally, I'm thankfurl for whorish Carolina Cheerleaders.

Humm I always thought that that the white man made up Thanksgiving.  Yes the Native Americans gave the white folks maize etc cause they were starving.  Where was that compassion when the white folks sent them blankets covered in various diseases???

Well I am not married but I think it is common knowledge around here that I am not single.

Thankgiving was founded based on the coming together of the first North American settlers and the Native Americans. Unfortunately, we all didn't stay friends and continue the purple group hugs, but the foundation of Thanksgiving was the coming together of the two peoples to celebrate. That's the part I celebrate when I get together with my family.

What is considered the First Thanksgiving was the harvest festival that took place in 1621 when the Separatists at Plimoth Plantation [the 51 surviving passengers of the Mayflower] realized that they had sufficiently bountiful harvest--their first--to reduce the likelihood that the entire settlement would starve to death over the winter.  Corn was their most successful crop, and this was due to the assistance of the Wampanoag, who taught them how to grow it.  They had little success with wheat and barley.

From one of the two documented, first-hand accounts of the 1621 festival:

Quoteour harvest being gotten in, our governour sent foure men on fowling, that so we might after a speciall manner rejoyce together, after we had gathered the fruits of our labours;  they foure in one day killed as much fowle, as with a little helpe beside, served the Company almost a weeke, at which time amongst other Recreations, we exercised our Armes, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest their greatest king Massasoyt, with some ninetie men, whom for three dayes we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five Deere, which they brought to the Plantation and bestowed on our Governour, and upon the Captaine and others.  And although it be not always so plentifull, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so farre from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plentie.
- Edward Winslow, 1622

Interpret it how you will.  :dunno:

Well why is anyone giving anyone disease covered blankets???  That is not very thankful!!  Plus the Native American didnt have boats that could travel that far and maybe they were content with their existance?????

Less oppressive leaders, perhaps?

It may be useful (at least in defense of the Thanksgiving holiday) to point out that not all "colonists" originated on the Mayflower.  By all known accounts, the Mayflower survivors had a very good relationship with the existing area residents.  Following the news of the modest success of the settlement at Plymouth, more and more colonists were sent, funded by English companies eager to gain a foothold in the new land of untapped resources.  I suspect that's when trouble started.

It is amazing how some people can be so negative, cynical, and brainwashed. It is pretty sad that these same people have to try and inject their negativity into everyone else.

Thanksgiving is a time to be appreciate life, be grateful for what you have, and be hopeful for the future. A time to set aside differences and realize we don't have it so bad afterall, and to enjoy what we have. It isn't about slaughter or genocide or diseased blankets or turkeys or ugly hats, lesbian nipples or purple group hugs. :P

It is a time to be thankful for what you have - and I think it is time for some people to realize that.

Having said that, happy thanksgiving everyone.  :thumb:

Exactly what I want is for everyone who can afford a big meal to maybe have just one iota of social consciousness and realize there are many who don't and all of the bloodshed that occurred so that we can enjoy our lives.

Hopefully the vast majority of people on this board realize that this is soley my opinion and I dont give a flying shaZam! if anyone cares to acknowledge it or not.

And if you are trying to umm not get me to post by scrutinizing my every opinion then you truely don't understand me.  Being educated does not equal being brainwashed.

I am very very thankful for what I have.  And it is a shame that more people in this world do not have what I have.
